Abstract

The Letter reports the first demonstration of thermally stable, optical bistability in a passive InGaAs/InGaAlAs multiquantum well nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon at the wavelength 1.5 μm. Critical switch powers of 1 mW were obtained, permitting operation with a CW diode laser source. Switch on/off times of 14 ns/40 ns were observed under slow ramping conditions.

True-CW operation of GaAs bistable etalon with electronic optical nonlinearity

Dominic J. Goodwill, Andy C. Walker, A.H. Kean +1 more

An all-epitaxial GaAs/GaAlAs optically bistable Fabry-Perot etalon, designed to maximise the band-edge resonant electronic nonlinearity relative to unwanted thermal effects, has been demonstrated to be capable of being held CW in either of the bistable states. Switch times of <40 ns were recorded together with a critical switch power of <700 μW.

Electronic optical bistability in an InGaAs/InAlAs multiple quantum well étalon at 1.5 μm wavelength

Optical bistabilities due to electronic refractive index changes are observed in an InGaAs/InAlAs multiple quantum well étalon device at around 1.5 μm wavelength. The switching speeds of less than 30 ns and the induced refractive index changes of −0.1% are observed using a tunable F-center laser.

Submilliwatt optical bistability in a coated InGaAs/InP multiquantum well waveguide Fabry–Perot cavity

David T. Neilson, Jeffrey E. Ehrlich, Paul Meredith +7 more

The observation of submilliwatt switching and optical bistability in an InGaAs/InP MQW waveguide Fabry–Perot cavity using diode laser sources is reported. Second-order bistability was also observed, with a higher power colour-centre laser source, showing that optically-induced phase shifts of greater than 2π can be achieved at power levels of less than 5mW. A switch contrast of ̃3:1 was observed.

Low-power optical bistability in a thermally stable AlGaAs étalon

Eric Masseboeuf, Olof Sahlén, Ulf Olin +3 more

Optical bistability with 10 mW input power is reported in a thermally stable, nonlinear AlGaAs étalon. A 3-μm-thick silver layer, which serves both as high-reflecting mirror and heat sink, makes it possible to operate the device at arbitrary duty cycles and pulse lengths up to 0.5 s, without any regenerative pulsations, at room temperature. The device operation depends on the plasma-induced electronic nonlinearity, and switching times are typically 10 ns. Device performance is compared with results from a numerical model which takes diffraction, diffusion, and heat conduction into account.

Thermal optical bistability in InGaAs/InAlAs MQW etalons at 1.5 mu m wavelength

K. Nonaka, Hitoshi Kawaguchi, Yuichi Kawamura +2 more

The authors report on the fabrication of devices assembled in one unit and the observation of thermal optical bistability with low threshold and high reproducibility using the low-energy side of a 1.54- mu m etalon peak. The devices are InGaAs/InAlAs multi-quantum-well (MQW) nonlinear etalons, whose finesse of 20 was obtained by using a SiO/sub 2//TiO/sub 2/ high-reflectivity coating. The authors also show that the nonlinear characteristics depend on the wavelength of the incident light detuned from the etalon peak. The relation between optical bistable characteristics and incident beam wavelength is studied in detail using a tunable F-center laser.>

Optical bistability in an InGaAs/InP multiple quantum well waveguide Fabry–Perot cavity

Jeffrey E. Ehrlich, David T. Neilson, Andy C. Walker +5 more

We report measurements of quasi-cw optical bistability in an InGaAs/InP multiple quantum well waveguide Fabry–Perot cavity at 1.47 μm wavelength. This operating wavelength is detuned from the band-edge resonance by 0.07 μm, where an enhanced free-carrier contribution to the nonlinear refractive index due to 2D confinement of carriers in the quantum wells accounts for the large index variations. The effect of any thermally induced nonlinear response is negligible.
