Characteristics of the laser emission spectrum of a thallium photodissociation laser

Abstract

The results are reported of investigations into the spectral and energy characteristics of a thallium photodissociation laser, emitting due to the 7S/sub 1/2/--6P/sub 3/2/ (lambda = 535 nm) and 7S/sub 1/2/--6P/sub 1/2/ (lambda = 337.6 nm) transitions. The experiments were performed using two types of resonator, and this made it possible to increase the radiation power density above the superradiance level and to operate in two-wavelength lasing regimes. On reaching a certain power density the structure of the laser emission spectrum changed, the nature of this change being different for the different lines. A discussion of the results obtained is given.

Efficient operation of an atomic thallium photodissociation laser at 535.0 nm

D. A. Scott, James A. Piper

Results of experiments investigating the influence of resonance radiation trapping on the power and efficiency of the atomic thallium photodissociation laser are reported. Transverse pumping of a thallium iodide cell with added free metallic thallium has enabled conversion efficiencies from the ArF laser pump beam of greater than 7% to be achieved on a single Tl laser transition at λ 535.0 nm. Collisional deexcitation of the 72S1/2 upper laser level imposes a limit on the TlI densities which can be employed.

Relaxation of the 6p2P03/2metastable state in a self-terminating thallium laser

Petr A. Bokhan, Д Э Закревский, V A Kim

We present the results of an experimental study of a Tl vapour/Ar mixture as an active medium. Under optical excitation of thallium to the 6d 2 D 3/2 state, we have achieved lasing at λ = 1.3 μm (7p 2 P 0 1/2 — 7s 2 S 1/2 transition) and 535 nm (7s 2 S 1/2 — 6p 2 P 0 3/2 ) through cascade transitions from the 6d 2 D 3/2 state to the upper laser levels. The electron deexcitation rate of the 6p 2 P 0 3/2 metastable state is no slower than 1.5×10 -8 cm 3 s -1 , meaning that this process cannot prevent self-terminating laser action at the 7s 2 S 1/2 — 6p 2 P 0 3/2 transition under electron-beam pumping at pulse repetition rates up to 100 kHz.

Stimulated emission of the 535 nm thallium line as a result of quasiresonant optical pumping of a Tl–He mixture by radiation from a recombination He–Ca laser

S. N. Atamas, L. M. Bukshpun, Yu V Koptev +2 more

Stimulated emission of the 535 nm line of thallium was observed when a Tl-He mixture was pumped optically in the violet wing of a pressure-broadened resonance line of thallium at 377.6 nm by a recombination He–Ca laser emitting at λ = 373.7 nm. Pumping resulted from the absorption transitions between repulsive terms of the Tl-He quasimolecule. The average stimulated radiation power reached 5 mW when the pulse repetition frequency was 6 kHz. The efficiency of conversion of the useful part of the pump pulse was 45%.

Conversion of the frequency of He–Ne laser radiation fromλ=1.15μto 377.6 nm in thallium vapor

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, V. A. Kiyashko, A. K. Popov +1 more

Infrared helium-neon laser radiation ( λ = 1.15 μ ) was transformed to the ultraviolet range ( λ = 377.6 nm) in thallium vapor by parametric mixing with radiation from a rhodamine 6 G dye laser ( λ = 568.6 nm). Use was made of a two-photon resonance of the pump (dye laser) radiation with the 6P 1/2 –7P 3/2 forbidden transition and of the proximity of the frequency of the radiation being temsformed to the frequency of the 7P 3/2 –7S 1/2 transition.

Efficiency studies of the thallium anti-Stokes Raman laser

J. C. White, Don O. Henderson

Selective photodissociation of TlCl and TlI using 248 nm radiation from a KrF* excimer laser has been used to create a Tl* (6p^{2}P\deg_{3/2}) metastable state population inversion. Stimulated anti-Stokes Raman emission at 376 nm has been observed using a 532 nm pump laser. Output power at the anti-Stokes wavelength and conversion efficiencies are reported.

Analysis of spectral and temporal characteristics of stimulated emission of HPHT-diamonds with nitrogen-vacancy - colouring centres

T.S. Misnikova

Currently, the development of active laser materials is a promising direction, but diamond has not yet been applied in this field. Therefore, one of the most significant advances in diamond physics is stimulated emission (SE) and pulsed laser generation in the spectral range between 710 and 720 nm (1.72-1.74 eV). The presented work shows new experimental data on the spectral and temporal characteristics of stimulated emission produced at nitrogen-vacancy NV -centres (nitrogen-negatively charged vacancy centre) for single-sector {111} HPHT diamond. For this purpose, an experimental bench was developed to obtain spectral and temporal characteristics of the stimulated emission and experiments were carried out. As a result of the analysis of experimental data it was found that in the spectral range of 650-750 nm at excitation by laser radiation with λ=532 nm a rather narrow band of stimulated emission in the region of 705-730 nm with a maximum around 716 nm is emitted. It is demonstrated that there is some dependence of the shapes of spectra and pulses of radiation. It was found that a decrease in pumping energy and irradiation volumes of diamond leads to the appearance of mode structures on the spectrum and peak structures on the oscillogram, and an increase in the spectrum and oscillogram smoothing. However, when the pumping energy is maintained but the irradiation volumes are reduced, the smooth shape of spectra and pulses is preserved. At the same time, the intensity of the spectrum decreases and the duration of the irradiation pulse decreases. Previously, laser generation was obtained on this diamond sample, but it was not achieved in the present work. The reasons for this phenomenon are not clear yet and require additional experiments and analysis of the obtained results.
