Dispersive-Type Optical Bistability in a Self-Electrooptic-Effect Etalon

Abstract

A dispersive-type self-electrooptic-effect etalon, which consists of a Fabry-Perot etalon multiple quantum well modulator and an electrical feedback circuit, is proposed. Calculations show that the ON-OFF contrast is improved up to 9:1 due to the sharp etalon resonance. The effect of the mirror reflectivity and the absorption coefficient is also studied.

Optical bistability in the presence of spatial dispersion

Dror Sarid, Nasser N. Peyghambarian, Brian P. McGinnis

We calculate the response of a Fabry-Perot etalon containing a nonlinear excitonic medium in the presence of spatial dispersion. The nonlinearity is taken to be that of the polariton density-dependent collision broadening of the exciton resonance. The effect of spatial dispersion on optical bistability in reflection is investigated theoretically in a CdSe etalon with a high-reflectivity back mirror.

A novel optical bistable multiple-quantum-well phase modulator

C. Park, Kumar Shiralagi, Ravi Droopad +1 more

The authors present a new type of optically bistable phase modulator utilizing a self electrooptic effect device (SEED) integrated with an electrooptic wavelength modulator. An electrically bistable SEED, operating on the principle of the quantum-confined Stark effect, controls the bias voltage across an electrooptic waveguide phase modulator to produce optical bistability. A control signal at 0.848 mu m, corresponding to the first electron to heavy hole exciton transition in GaAs/AlGaAs multiple-quantum-well is used to switch 1.152 mu m light propagating through a waveguide in a direction normal to the control beam.>

Design and Investigation of a Nonlinear Fabry-Perot Device with Gaas Spacer Layer

B. Acklin, C. Bagnoud, M.‐A. Dupertuis

A bistable etalon, consisting of an optically nonlinear semiconductor spacer layer sandwiched between two Bragg mirrors, has been optimized for use in reflection, using a numerical model for a self-consistent carrier density based on published experimental data for the nonlinear absorption alpha(I,lambda) and refraction DELTA-n(I,lambda). The saturation behavior of the refractive index and the absorption in bulk GaAs has been investigated at different wavelengths. High saturation values of DELTA-n(s) almost-equal-to .080 were found 20 meV below the gap. 30 meV above the gap we observed a comparable index change, together with an absorption saturation feature, leading to a highly nonlinear response close to the bistability threshold in our unoptimized etalon.

A simplified analysis of the optical bistability of multiple quantum well etalons

H. Yokoyama

An analysis of static room-temperature-operation characteristics of a reflection-mode semiconductor multiple-quantum well etalon by a simplified two-level system formula of optical nonlinear properties and a computer simulation is presented. In the calculation for a GaAs/AlGaAs multiple-quantum-well etalon using the parameters reported in experimental measurement, it is shown that the very large excitonic optical nonlinearity is not effectively utilized for the optical bistable operation. This occurs because the effective positive-feedback mechanism which increases the etalon internal light intensity is suppressed when a hardly saturable background interband absorption tail is larger than a few thousand cm/sup -1/ at a wavelength where the large excitonic dispersive nonlinearity is observed.>

Optical bistability in semiconductor periodic structures

Jian‐Jun He, Michael Čada

A theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs/AlAs superlattices is presented. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in this case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.>

Recent advances in optical testability

Nasser N. Peyghambarian

Optical bistability can be obtained in nonlinear materials either with Fabry-Perot mirrors or without external feedback. When a material is placed between partially reflecting mirrors, a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon is formed with the etalon providing an external feedback. Optical bistability and gating occur as a result of a shift in the Fabry-Perot peak when the light intensity is increased (or when a second laser beam is introduced into the cavity). Optical bistability with the external feedback mechanism has been observed in many semiconductors such as bulk GaAs, GaAs-AIGaAs multiple-quantum-well (MQW) structures, InSb, InAs, CdS, CdHgTe, GaSe, and CuCI.
