Polarization reversal of the wavefront of light beams in photorefractive crystals

Abstract

A theoretical study is made of the possibility of reversal of the wavefront of a light beam in respect of the phase and polarization by degenerate four-wave interactions in photorefractive ferroelectric crystals. It is shown that the polarizations of the signal and reversed waves can be conjugate only under certain conditions which must be satisfied by the intensity, phase, and polarization of the pump beams, and also by the orientation of the optic axis of a crystal. Specific situations when these conditions are satisfied are considered in the case of photorefractive ferroelectric crystals of the 3m and 4mm symmetries.

Photorefractive phase conjugation with orthogonally polarized pumping beams

Hongzhi Kong, Carl Lin, Anne Marie Biernacki +1 more

We solve the undepleted-pumps photorefractive four-wave mixing equations for the case of orthogonally polarized pump beams. Advantages over the parallel-polarized-pumps case include the potential for reflectivity enhancement and easy isolation of the conjugator from the source. The phase-conjugate reflectivities for both the parallel and orthogonally polarized pump beam cases were measured with a BaTiO3 crystal, and the results support our theoretical predictions.

Self-excitation of mutually phase-conjugated light waves in a cubic gyrotropic photorefractive crystal subjected to a square-wave electric field

Rudolf V. Litvinov, S I Polkovnikov, Stanislav M. Shandarov

Stationary four-wave mixing in a shifted photorefractive transmission grating formed in cubic gyrotropic crystals of the 23 symmetry is considered in the case of low contrasts of the original optical interference pattern. Expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients for the phase conjugation of weak light beams in arbitrarily cut samples are obtained by solving exactly the equations for the coupled waves that include the effects of the natural circular birefringence and the linear birefringence induced by the external field. The conditions for the generation of phase-conjugated waves are determined for the mixing at 633 nm in Bi 12 SiO 20 and Bi 12 SiO 20 samples in the case when the grating vector is parallel to the [110] axis and the incident pump waves propagate in the (001) crystal plane and have arbitrary polarisations.

Mulitigrating optical phase conjugation with considerations of phase effects

Ping Xie, Jian-Hua Dai, Zhang Hong-jun

We develop a numerical method to solve the coupled-wave equations for four-wave mixing phase conjugation in a photorefractive crystal with unequal complex coupling constants; by this method we can obtain both the intensities and the phases of various beams. We discuss the intensities and the phases of the interacting beams in a photorefractive crystal for the cases in which the phase shifts between the refractive-index gratings and the interference pattern are all π/2 and in which they are not all π/2.

Efficiency of wavefront reversal of optical beams in four-wave interactions in a resonant medium

Pavel A Apanasevich, Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, С. П. Жвавый

An analysis is made of reversal of the phase front of an optical beam in four-wave interaction in a resonant medium. Expressions are obtained for the amplitudes of the signal and reversed beams. It is shown that the reversal coefficient does not depend on the sign of the frequency detuning and may be much greater than unity at pump powers not exceeding the saturation power of the resonance transition.

Phase conjugation via multiple gratings in photorefractive crystals

Milivoj R. Belić

We consider phase conjugation via degenerate four-wave mixing in photorefractive crystals when more than one grating mechanism is operative. A method for exact solution of the steady-state wave equations which include pump depletion is presented. It is discovered that equal-strength multigrating operation does not allow signal amplification.

Reflectivity of photorefractive cross-polarized four-wave mixing in consideration of pump depletion

Hisashi Matsuoka, Atsushi Okamoto, Mototsugu Takamura +1 more

We analyze the phase-conjugate reflectivity and the amplification property of cross-polarized four-wave mixing with a photorefractive BaTiO3 crystal in consideration of the pump-beam depletion. The coupled-wave equations of cross-polarized four-wave mixing with ordinary writing beams and an extraordinary reading beam are derived and solved with the grating-integral method. The results of calculations of the reflectivity and the amplification factors will be compared with the result under the undepleted-pumps approximation. In addition, to achieve high conversion efficiency, the optimum conditions for the intensity ratio and the angle configurations of the probe and pump beams are also discussed.
