Abstract

Stationary four-wave mixing in a shifted photorefractive transmission grating formed in cubic gyrotropic crystals of the 23 symmetry is considered in the case of low contrasts of the original optical interference pattern. Expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients for the phase conjugation of weak light beams in arbitrarily cut samples are obtained by solving exactly the equations for the coupled waves that include the effects of the natural circular birefringence and the linear birefringence induced by the external field. The conditions for the generation of phase-conjugated waves are determined for the mixing at 633 nm in Bi 12 SiO 20 and Bi 12 SiO 20 samples in the case when the grating vector is parallel to the [110] axis and the incident pump waves propagate in the (001) crystal plane and have arbitrary polarisations.

Solutions to vector four-wave mixing in cubic photorefractive materials

David A. Fish, A. K. Powell

We present an eight-dimensional matrix formulation of vector four-wave mixing. We study the case of a nonoptically active photorefractive for the transmission grating. The coupled equations are represented in a group formalism and irreducible forms are found. We show that when cross-polarization coupling is neglected, the system of equations is governed by two coupled SU(2) groups. We develop a theory that allows for pump depletion and electric-field-induced bulk birefringence. Analytical solutions are found when cubic 4¯3m materials are considered in two standard experimental geometries, i.e., electric fields perpendicular to the (110) crystal faces and electric fields perpendicular to the (001) crystal faces. Results are presented that show the effects of linear and circular polarized beams, and the use of these materials for vector phase conjugation is discussed. Solution routes to other geometries and noncubic photorefractive materials are also presented.

Anisotropic four-wave mixing in cubic photorefractive crystals

Aleksander Błȩdowski, Wieslaw Z. Krolikowski

The anisotropic four-wave mixing in the scheme recently proposed by S.I. Stepanov and M.P. Petrov (Opt. Commun. vol.53, p.64-8, 1985) is studied. The main feature of this interaction arrangement is that the same phase hologram (index grating) has opposite contrasts for orthogonally polarized, counterpropagating waves. The coupled nonlinear equations, in the case of transmission and reflection gratings, for the pi /2 photorefractive phase shift are exactly solved, and their properties are discussed in detail. The numerical evidence of the effects of bistability and self-oscillation is included.>

Self-oscillation in a photorefractive phase-conjugate mirror with linear absorption I Isotropic four-wave mixing

Nitin C. Kothari, J. A. Tataronis

The effects of linear absorption on the degenerate and nondegenerate self-oscillation conditions of a photorefractive phase-conjugate mirror are explored. In this study, phase-conjugation results from nonlinear mixing of two strong undepleted parallel-polarized counterpropagating pump waves with a probe wave. Numerical results are presented that illustrate that the linear absorption tends to increase the value of the coupling coefficient required for self-oscillation. It is also found that the pump intensity ratio r is almost independent of the linear absorption for positive normalized detuning Δωτ between the probe and the pump frequencies and of the zero phase shift, ϕ, between the gratings and the light interference patterns when the gratings are stationary. For ϕ = ±π/2, the variation of r with respect to absorption is symmetric for positive and negative detunings.

Mulitigrating optical phase conjugation with considerations of phase effects

Ping Xie, Jian-Hua Dai, Zhang Hong-jun

We develop a numerical method to solve the coupled-wave equations for four-wave mixing phase conjugation in a photorefractive crystal with unequal complex coupling constants; by this method we can obtain both the intensities and the phases of various beams. We discuss the intensities and the phases of the interacting beams in a photorefractive crystal for the cases in which the phase shifts between the refractive-index gratings and the interference pattern are all π/2 and in which they are not all π/2.

Theory of optical phase conjugation in Kerr media

Henk F. Arnoldus, Thomas F. George

Optical phase conjugation by four-wave mixing in a Kerr medium is considered. Two strong counterpropagating lasers pump a nonlinear medium in which they excite the third-order polarization. Mixing with a weak incident field then generates the phase-conjugated image of that field. It is shown how the polarization of the pumps and the tensorial nature of the nonlinear interaction can be accounted for by a geometrical polarization tensor. The electric field is shown to obey two coupled wave equations, which couple a positive- and negative-frequency component of the field. These wave equations allow plane-wave solutions, and we derive the dispersion relation for the wave vectors of these modes. By matching the field of such a mode across the boundaries of the medium to an external incident field, we are able to obtain analytically the Fresnel coefficients for reflection and transmission. Our expressions reduce to earlier results in the appropriate limits.

Self-oscillation in a photorefractive phase-conjugate mirror with linear absorption II Anisotropic four-wave mixing

Nitin C. Kothari

The effects of linear absorption on the degenerate and nondegenerate self-oscillation of a photorefractive phase-conjugate mirror under condition of anisotropic four-wave mixing are considered. The phase conjugation results from nonlinear mixing of two strong undepleted orthogonally polarized counterpropagating pump waves with a probe wave. We consider two types of situation for orthogonally polarized pump beams corresponding to two crystal families: one such as the Bi12SiO20 crystal family (sillenite family) and the other such as the BaTiO3 and strontium barium niobate crystal family. In both of these crystal families the degenerate and nondegenerate self-oscillations are shown to occur in the presence of linear absorption, which tends to increase the value of the coupling coefficient required for self-oscillation. Numerical results are presented that exhibit various features of degenerate and nondegenerate self-oscillation in both crystal families for different values of the phase ϕb of the backward grating.
