Abstract

A scheme is proposed for the generation of polarization- and frequency-entangled photons in a semiconductor planar microcavity. Photon entanglement can be achieved by converting two lower polariton branches with symmetric in-plane momenta into lower and upper polariton branches with zero in-plane momentum via a biexciton state. The phase-matching condition is satisfied for a microcavity with cavity detuning equal to the biexciton binding energy. The generation efficiency and energy control of the entangled photons are demonstrated for a CuCl microcavity as an example.

Highly Efficient Generation of Entangled Photons by Controlling Cavity Bipolariton States

Hisaki Oka, Hajime Ishihara

We theoretically investigate entangled-photon generation via a biexciton in a planar microcavity. Owing to strong exciton-photon coupling, the biexciton in the cavity produces a bound two-cavity-polariton state (cavity bipolariton). Entangled photons are generated by the cascade decay of the cavity bipolariton. We propose a novel scheme for highly efficient entangled-photon generation by controlling the cavity bipolariton states. It is shown that highly efficient generation can be achieved when a weak cavity bipolariton, formed by a biexciton and unbound cavity polaritons, is realized.

Theory of entangled-photon generation via cavity bipolaritons

Hisaki Oka, Hajime Ishihara

Nonlinear optical response of cavity polaritons formed in high-g semiconductor microcavities has attracted much attention because of their potential applications to entangled-photon sources and other quantum information technologies. Theoretical ideas of entangled-photon generation, e.g., biexcitonic cavity quantum electrodynamics and polariton-polariton scattering, have been suggested, however these theories are limited in scope of target because they restrict two-exciton states to either biexciton or unbound two-exciton states. As for exciton system with small binding energy of biexciton, it is likely that the interplay between the biexciton and unbound two-exciton states have much impact on generation efficiency of entangled photons. The authors introduces a general model including both biexciton and unbound two-exciton states and discuss generation efficiency of entangled photons.

Effects of unbound two‐exciton states on entangled photons generated from a cavity biexciton

Hisaki Oka, Hajime Ishihara

Abstract We theoretically investigate entangled‐photon generation via biexciton in a planar microcavity. When the exciton‐photon coupling is comparable to the biexciton binding energy, the biexciton can be stably coupled with the cavity photons (referred to as a cavity biexciton). Entangled photons are generated by the cascade decay of the cavity biexciton. We show that high‐efficient generation of entangled photons can be achieved when the superposition state of a cavity biexciton and two cavity polaritons formed by unbound two‐exciton states is realized. Branch-entangled polariton pairs in planar microcavities and photonic wires

Cristiano Ciuti

A scheme is proposed for the generation of branch-entangled pairs of microcavity polaritons through spontaneous interbranch parametric scattering. Branch entanglement is achievable when there are two twin processes, where the role of signal and idler can be exchanged between two different polariton branches. Branch entanglement of polariton pairs can lead to the emission of frequency-entangled photon pairs out of the microcavity. In planar microcavities, the necessary phase-matching conditions are fulfilled for pumping of the upper polariton branch at an arbitrary in-plane wave vector. The important role of nonlinear losses due to pair scattering into high-momentum exciton states is evaluated. The results show that the lack of protection of the pump polaritons in the upper branch is critical. In photonic wires, branch entanglement of one-dimensional polaritons is achievable when the pump excites a lower polariton sub-branch at normal incidence, providing protection from the exciton reservoir.

Entangled-Photon Generation in Biexcitonic Cavity QED

Hiroshi Ajiki, Hajime Ishihara

We present a new concept of entangled photon generation via biexciton from a quantum-well embedded in a microcavity. The coupled states of the biexciton and cavity photons play an important role in the entangled photon generation. In fact, a suitable design of the level scheme of the coupled states can considerably enhance the generation process. We present the optimal condition for entangled photon generation in terms of the biexcitonic cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED).

Generation and signatures of entanglement in cavity quantum electrodynamics

D. Pagel, Holger Fehske

We inspect different quantum optical setups from the viewpoint of entanglement generation and detection. As a first step we consider a planar semiconductor microcavity and optimize the Bell-type correlations and their robustness against dephasing to create strong bipartite entanglement between polariton branches, which subsequently can be transfered to the emitted photons. In a second step, in order to create multipartite entangled light, we place the microcavity in an optical resonator driven by pump pulses with a frequency comb spectrum. For this system we show how phase matching of all comb modes can be achieved and will lead to indistinguishable scattering processes causing entanglement among every mode. Finally we demonstrate the buildup of entanglement in the dissipative dynamics of emitters coupled to a single cavity photon mode driven by an external laser. From a Floquet master equation approach we find that entanglement production predominates during the first few laser oscillation periods.
