Abstract

We demonstrate the formation of (1+1) - and (2+1) -dimensional solitons in photorefractive CdZnTe:V, exploiting the intensity-resonant behavior of the space-charge field. We control the resonance optically, facilitating a 10-mus soliton formation times with very low optical power.

Photorefractive solitons and light-induced resonance control in semiconductor CdZnTe

Tal Schwartz, Yaniv Ganor, Tal Carmon +4 more

Summary form only given. We demonstrate the formation of (1 + 1)D and of (2 + 1)D solitons in the photorefractive semiconductor CdZnTe:V, and show how to optically control the resonance intensity, which facilitates microseconds formation times at very low optical power. CdZnTe:V has a similar intensity-resonant mechanism as InP:Fe, with an important difference: the electrons and the holes exchange roles. Electrons are optically excited by a 1.3 /spl mu/m (or shorter) wavelength, whereas holes are thermally excited. However, the holes can also be excited optically, by a /spl sim/1.5 /spl mu/m wavelength beam. Here, we take advantage of this property to increase (and control) the hole excitation rate considerably by uniformly illuminating the crystal with a 1.48 /spl mu/m wavelength beam (the "background beam"). This background beam sets the resonance intensity to much higher values than temperature-driven resonance, thereby shortening their formation time to 10 microsecond with soliton intensity of /spl sim/20 W/cm/sup 2/ and background intensity of /spl sim/1 W/cm/sup 2/.

Two-wave mixing gain enhancement in photorefractive CdZnTe:V by optically stimulated electron– hole resonance

Peter Pogany, Hans Joachim Eichler, Makram Hage-Ali

Large photorefractive two-wave mixing gain in CdZnTe:V at a 1.5-μm wavelength is demonstrated with an external dc field and a third incoherent stimulating beam of 1.3-μm wavelength. Resonant gain enhancement depending on the intensity of the incoherent illumination was observed. The maximum gain coefficient of 5.5 cm-1 is comparable with the value obtained with an ac field.

Spatial solitons in a pumped semiconductor resonator

V. B. Taranenko, Carl O. Weiss, W. Stolz

Bright and dark spatial solitons are observed in an optically pumped semiconductor resonator. The pumping allows us to reduce considerably the light intensity necessary for the existence of the solitons and alleviates thermal load problems. Experiments are found to agree qualitatively with calculations based on a simple large-aperture semiconductor resonator model. The role of the signs of the absorptive and reactive nonlinearities in soliton existence is discussed in relation to the nonlinear resonance effect, the tilted-wave mechanism of pattern formation, and the sign of the population inversion.

ALL OPTICAL DOUBLE QUASI-STEADY-STATE SPATIAL SOLITON

SHE WEI-LONG, Lee Wing-Kee, (1)香港中文大学物理系和材料科学技术研究中心,中国香港; (2)中山大学超快速激光光谱学国家重点实验室,广州510275

We observed for the first time (to our knowledge) a new type of all optical double-quasi-steady-state photorefractive spatial soliton in a Cu:KNSBN crystal. The soliton was created without an applied electric field but with an inducing laser beam.An all optical switching effect was found in the formation of the soliton.

Stable high-dimensional spatial weak-light solitons in a resonant three-state atomic system

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang, L. Deng

We study the formation of a nonlinear localized high-dimensional optical beam in a lifetime-broadened three-state atomic system. We show that stable high-dimensional spatial optical solitons with extremely weak-light intensity can occur in such a highly resonant medium through a mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency. We demonstrate that the interaction between two high-dimensional spatial optical solitons displays interesting properties and these solitons can be easily controlled by manipulating the coupling optical field of the system.
