Abstract

Abstract We present theoretical and experimental studies of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) for the transition of 85 Rb-D2 line. From the results calculated by solving time-dependent density-matrix equations including the optical and Zeeman coherences connected via three-photon interactions, the EIA signals have ultra-narrow feature in low powers of coupling beam in both same- and orthogonal-polarization configurations for both stationary and thermal atoms. However, the ultra-narrow EIA signals from high powers of coupling laser beam still remained in the ultra-narrow state only in the same-polarization configuration for thermal atoms. The calculated results match well with experimental results except ultra-narrow EIA region considering linewidths of two separate coupling and probe lasers.

Electromagnetically induced absorption in Rb atoms with circular polarization of laser beams: Effects of neighboring transitions

Zeeshan Ali Safdar Jadoon, Aisar-ul Hassan, Heung‐Ryoul Noh +1 more

The effects of neighboring transitions through Doppler broadening on electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for the D2 transition line in Rb atoms with respect to the same circular polarization configurations ( σ + − σ + ) of coupling and probe lasers have been investigated. Spectra for the open F g = 2 → F e = 2 transition of 87 Rb and the F g = 3 → F e = 2 and 3 transitions of 85 Rb exhibit EIA, resulting from the neighboring effect of F g = 2 → F e = 3 and F g = 3 → F e = 4 transitions, respectively. In contrast, EIT is observed for the open F g = 2 → F e = 1 transition of 87 Rb, which indicates greater hyperfine energy splittings of 87 Rb and weaker neighboring effects than those of 85 Rb. Based on the theoretical results, we can confirm that EIT in the case of F g > F e for 87 Rb and circular parallel polarization transforms into EIA due to the magnitude of the neighboring effects with a decrease in the hyperfine energy splittings.

Effects of neighboring transitions on electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in 87 Rb atoms with respect to varying hyperfine spacings

Zeeshan Ali Safdar Jadoon, Aisar-ul Hassan, Heung‐Ryoul Noh +1 more

Effects of neighboring transitions through Doppler broadening on electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of the degenerate two-level system at the F g =2→ F e =1,2, and 3 transitions of the 87 Rb D2 line have been investigated. Two different polarization configurations, such as linear parallel and linear perpendicular polarizations of coupling and probe lasers, have been studied. We study the significant variation of EIT and EIA due to the effect of the neighboring transitions via artificial variation of the hyperfine spacings of the 5 P 3/2 state. We have a new observation such as EIT instead of EIA due to the neighboring effect, even in the case of closed systems such as F g =2→ F e =3 of 87 Rb for the linear parallel configuration, for the first time to our best knowledge. The observed spectra match well with theoretically calculated spectra. EIAs for the open F g =2→ F e =1 and 2 transitions at the linear perpendicular polarization are observed due to neighboring effects. This system may be applied to optical switching systems for future quantum processing application.

Multiphoton nonlinear frequency mixing effects on the coherent electromagnetically induced absorption spectra of Rb85 atoms under a longitudinal magnetic field: Theory and experiment

Zeeshan Ali Safdar Jadoon, Heung‐Ryoul Noh, Jin‐Tae Kim

Multiphoton nonlinear frequency mixing effects on coherent electromagnetically induced absorption spectra of $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms using two orthogonal linear polarizations of strong-coupling and weak probe beams are investigated theoretically and experimentally with respect to an applied longitudinal magnetic field and coupling powers. Herein, we confirm that at least five-photon interactions in solving density matrix equations for the ${F}_{g}=3\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{F}_{e}=4$ transition of $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms are required to explain experimentally observed coherent electromagnetically induced absorption spectra when a quantum axis is selected as the propagation direction of co-propagating coupling and probe laser beams. Distinct calculated spectral differences owing to variations in the magnetic field and coupling power between three- and five-photon interactions are confirmed. The obtained asymmetrical spectral shapes match very well with those calculated from five-photon interactions considering the off-resonant ${F}_{g}=3\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{F}_{e}=2,3$ transitions. Genuine coherent spectral shapes are observed with a single laser combined with two acousto-optic modulators, wherein the spectral resolution is limited because of the decoherence rate between Zeeman sublevels in the ground state from transit-time relaxation.

Transformation of EIA to EIT by incoherent pumping of the 85Rb D1 line

Hoon Yu, Jung Dong Kim, Tae Young Jung +1 more

We have observed a transformation from electromagnetically-induced absorption (EIA) to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in open systems of the 85 Rb D 1 line by adding an incoherent optical pumping laser. This result raises a new question about recent theoretical work which does not address the degree of open. The pump beam only plays a role in transferring atoms by a spontaneous transition into the interacting system for EIT observation, which is an incoherent process. The dependence of the absorption spectra on the intensity and the polarization of each laser beam were observed. We have found the same tendencies in all transitions except the F = 2 ↔ F′ = 3 transition of the 85 Rb D 1 line, which is the system that almost satisfies conventional EIA conditions.

Intensity dependence narrowing of electromagnetically induced absorption in a Doppler-broadened medium

Jelena Dimitrijević, D. Arsenović, B. M. Jelenkovic

In this paper, we present a theoretical model for studying the interaction between linearly polarized laser light and near-degenerated Zeeman sublevels for a multiple V-type atomic system of $^{2}S_{1∕2}{F}_{g}=2\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{2}P_{3∕2}{F}_{e}=3$ transition in $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$. We have calculated the laser absorption in a Hanle configuration, as well as the amplitudes and the widths of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in the range of laser intensities from $0.01\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{to}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}40\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mW}∕{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$. Our results, showing nonvanishing EIA amplitude, a nonmonotonic increase of the EIA width for the increase of laser intensity, and pronounced shape differences of the Hanle EIA curves at different laser intensities, are in good agreement with recent experimental results. We have found that the EIA behaves differently than the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) as a function of the laser intensity. Both the amplitude and width of the EIA have narrow maximums at $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{to}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mW}∕{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$. We have shown the strong influence of Doppler broadening of atomic transition on Hanle resonances and have suggested the explanation of it.

Atomic coherence changes caused by optical pumping applied to electromagnetically induced absorption

Han Seb Moon, S K Kim, K Kim +2 more

We have investigated atomic coherence changes caused by optical pumping applied to electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) occurring at the open system, which consists of the transition between the F g = 2 ground state and the F e = 3 excited state in the 85 Rb D1-line. For optical pumping, another laser resonantly tuned to the transition between the F g = 3 ground state and the F e = 2 excited state was used. We found that the atomic coherence for EIA can be changed not by increasing the pumping rate but by pumping differently populations into the Zeeman sublevels in the F g = 2 ground state, which is realized by changing the polarization of the pumping laser. The experimental results were able to be analysed by density matrix equations in the simple model system.
