Abstract

We present a demonstration of mid-infrared photon echoes generated with parametrically downconverted incoherent light. The photon echoes generated in this way enable one to study the dynamics of vibrations in the 1.5-4.0-microm wavelength region with subpicosecond time resolution.

Efficient generation of mid-infrared photons at 3.16 μm by coherent frequency downconversion

Kun Huang, Qian Zhou, Xiaorong Gu +3 more

We demonstrated an efficient way for generating a mid-infrared source at 3.16 μm by coherent coincidence downconversion. The signal light at 1.04 μm was frequency downconverted by the synchronized pump pulses at 1.55 μm with a conversion efficiency of 65%.

Recent Progress in Short and Mid-Infrared Single-Photon Generation: A Review

Arianna Elefante, Stefano Dello Russo, Fabrizio Sgobba +4 more

The generation of single photons in the mid-infrared spectral region is attracting the interest of scientific and technological research, motivated by the potential improvements that many important and emerging applications, such as quantum sensing, metrology and communication, could benefit from. This review reports the progress in short and mid-infrared single photon generation, focusing on probabilistic sources based on the two non-linear processes of spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) and four wave mixing (FWM). On one hand, numerical simulations of mid-infrared SPDC are described as a powerful tool to assist and guide the experimental realization, along with the implementation and engineering of novel non-linear materials. On the other hand, the advantages offered by FWM in silicon waveguides in terms of integration, miniaturization and manufacturability are presented, providing an optimal technology for integrated quantum applications.

Numerical investigation of mid-infrared single-photon generation

Richard A. McCracken, Francesco Graffitti, Alessandro Fedrizzi

Single-photon creation through parametric downconversion underpins quantum technology for quantum sensing and imaging. Here we numerically study the creation of single photons in the near- and mid-infrared regime from 1.5 - 12 um in a range of novel nonlinear semiconductor and chalcopyrite materials. We identify phase-matching conditions and single out regimes in which group-velocity matching can be achieved with commercially available pump lasers. Finally, we discuss how mid-infrared single photons can be detected. Using our numerical results, we identify materials and pump lasers for up-conversion detection in conventional wavelength bands. Our study provides a complete recipe for mid-IR single-photon generation and detection, opening up quantum enhancements for mid-IR applications such as bio-medical imaging, communication, and remote sensing.

Mid-Infrared Photon-Pair Generation in AgGaS2 crystals

Mohit Kumar, Thomas Pertsch, Frank Setzpfandt

We demonstrate non-degenerate photon-pair generation by spontaneous parametric down conversion in silver gallium sulfide AgGaS2. Idler photons in the mid-infrared spectral range above 6 µm wavelength are generated with corresponding signal photons in the visible.
