Pulse generation system for fiber amplifier optical memory: Measurement of gain saturation properties

Abstract

We report on development of a pulse generation system for realization of optical memory based on optical interference inside a fiber amplifier. Properties of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier are precisely evaluated as a memory medium. Under a CW pumping condition, pulse width, pulse interval and pumping power dependences of gain saturation are precisely measured. The dependences are discussed by assuming that the pulse width is much shorter than response times of erbium ion three-level systems.

"Doping a part of the optical fiber core by (Er3+ ) ions in presence of external pumping power will lead to form the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA).The performance of this optical amplifier depends on (the power and the wavelength of the pumping laser, the power and wavelength of the input signal, amplifier length, ion concentration). These parameters will affect the characteristics of EDFA such as amplifier gain, gain saturation, noise figure and output power. However, these characteristics can be determined by solving the EDFA propagation and rate equations. The solution of these equations of two-level laser medium can be done numerically. In this paper, we are proposed a novel method to solve these equations. The reconstructed results are perfectly coincided the well known numerical results.

Transient Population Inversion Induced and Probed by a Signal Pulse in a Continuous-Wave-Pumped Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier

K. Kuroda, Yuzo Yoshikuni

We report on the transient population inversion in a continuous-wave (CW)-pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The temporal profile of the population inversion of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier is probed by a signal pulse that induces a decrease in the population inversion. The pump and signal power dependences of the profile are measured. We analyze the dependences by applying an analytical formula describing the temporal evolution of the population inversion at the input end of the fiber.

Quantum-statistical properties of pulse amplification in optical fibers with gain saturation

Gokalp Kahraman, B.E.A. Saleb

We studied the quantum-statistical properties of pulse amplification in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (OFAs), including saturation of the atomic population inversion and pump depletion. We use a fully quantum theory to describe the atom-field interaction as wed as the light propagation. The generating function of the output photon number distribution (PND) is determined as a function of time during the course of the pulse, with an arbitrary input PND assumed. For input light with Poisson PND, the output PND is shown to be the Laguerre distribution with parameter 1 at all times smaller than the coherence time /spl tau//sub c/, even in the presence of nonlinear effects. An expression for the photon count moment generating function is found for counting times T/spl Gt//spl tau//sub c/. The mean pulse shape is shown to be altered by the nonlinear amplification. The variance is similarly altered, and the excess amplifier noise is greater at the leading side of the pulse.>

Stopping and storing light pulses within a fiber optic ring resonator

Suhailin, A. F. Ali, Yupapin +3 more

A simple all optical system for stopping and storing light pulses is demonstrated. The system consists of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and a fiber ring resonator. The results show that the multisoliton generation with a free spectrum range of 2.4 nm and a pulse spectral width of 0.96 nm is achieved. The memory time of 15 min and the maximum soliton output power of 5.94 dBm are noted, respectively. This means that light pulses can be trapped, i.e., stopped optically within the fiber ring resonator.

Wavelength‐dependent transient gain saturation in an erbium‐doped fiber amplifier under different pump conditions

K. Kuroda, Kei E. I. Tanaka, Yuzo Yoshikuni

Abstract We report measurements of wavelength‐dependent gain saturation in an erbium‐doped fiber amplifier over a wavelength range of 30 nm under four different pump conditions. The wavelength and the pump dependences were simultaneously analyzed using a theoretical model with the McCumber relation. Our results could be reproduced using a single theoretical model.
