Abstract

In a GaAs quantum well waveguide coupled by orthogonally polarized optical fields, the influence of spin coherence on the optical bistability (OB) and multistability is investigated. It is shown that OB and multistability are very sensitive to the relative phase between applied fields.

Controlling of optical bistability and multistability in a defect slab

Masoud Jabbari

Abstract Optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) due to wide applications in all-optical switching and transistors is studied in this paper. Here, we study the OB and OM properties of incident light in a defect slab doped by a GaAs quantum well (QW) nanostructure. It is shown that OB and OM features can be manipulated by spin coherence created by circular polarized laser fields in GaAs QWs. The impacts of laser field features, such as intensity, frequency detuning, and relative phase, on OB and OM are simulated. Moreover, the dependence of OB and OM features of a probe light on the thickness of the slab, then, are analyzed. It is found that the thickness of the slab can provide a new way to optimize the intensity threshold of OB and OM. We hope that our proposed model may be useful for developing all-optical devices on nanoscales.

Spin coherence control of optical bistability via light hole transition in multiple quantum well waveguide embedded in a dielectric medium

Ghahraman Solookinejad, M. Panahi, Elnaz Ahmadi Sangachin +1 more

In this study, we explore the optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) features of probe light propagating in a multiple quantum well (MQW) nanostructure embedded in a dielectric medium. It is realized that via light hole (LH) transition between valance bands and conduction band of MQWs with different electron states, the electron spin coherence can be created which can be used to controlling the OB and OM properties. It is realized that the thickness of dielectric slab can lead to adjusting the threshold of OB in different intensities of input field. Moreover, it is found that the transition from OB to OM or vice versa can be possible by selection of suitable quantity of slab thickness. In addition, the role of relative phase of applied fields on OB and OM manners is discussed in different quantities of thickness. Our results may be suitable for developing nanoscale devices in quantum information science and technologies for future applications.

Optical bistability and multistability via amplitude and phase control in a Duplicated two-level system

Luling Jin, Zhongyao Feng

We investigate the optical bistability (OB) in a duplicated two-level system contained in a ring cavity. The atoms are driven by two orthogonally polarized fields with a relative phase. The OB behavior of such a system can be controlled by the amplitude and the relative phase of the coupling field, and it is possible to switch between bistability and multistability by adjusting the relative phase.

Optical bistability in low-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures under cw pump laser and infrared pulse signals

Hamid Reza Hamedi, Ali Khaledi‐Nasab, Ali Raheli +2 more

We have investigated theoretically the optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability in quantum-well (QW) semiconductor heterostructures. The effect of a cw pump laser field and a control infrared pulse signal on OB is discussed. It is found that the OB threshold can be controlled by varying the strength of applied fields. It is also shown that OB can be switched to optical multistability or vice versa just using an appropriate relative phase of applied fields. This investigation may open up some new possibilities for applications in all-optical switching in quantum-well structures.

All-Optical Switching between Optical Bistability and Multistability via Exciton Spin Relaxation

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

All-optical coherent control of optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) in the 4.8 nm ZnSe single-quantum well based on excitons and biexciton transitions is investigated. By applying a pair of phase-locked laser pulses all-optical coherent control can be obtained. Theoretical analysis with density matrix and Maxwell equations then yield the optical bistability and optical multistability. It is shown that by controlling the coherent and incoherent processes, the intensity threshold of OB and OM can be modified. Also, it is found that the switching between OB and OM or vice versa can be occurred for some controllable parameters.

Multiple spontaneously generated coherence and phase control of optical bistability and multistability in a tripod four-level atomic medium

Huijing Li, Hongjun Zhang, Hui Sun +3 more

Optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors induced by multiple spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) are investigated theoretically in a tripod four-level atomic scheme. It is found that OB or OM is sensitive to the SGC effects, and the thresholds of OB can be controlled via changing the strength of multiple SGC or the relative phases of the applied fields. In addition, we can switch OB to OM by adjusting the twofold relative phases of the applied fields or vice versa.
