Abstract

Optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors induced by multiple spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) are investigated theoretically in a tripod four-level atomic scheme. It is found that OB or OM is sensitive to the SGC effects, and the thresholds of OB can be controlled via changing the strength of multiple SGC or the relative phases of the applied fields. In addition, we can switch OB to OM by adjusting the twofold relative phases of the applied fields or vice versa.

Phase control of optical bistability and multistability in a tripod four-level atomic medium

Optical bistability and multistability behaviors are investigated in a tripod four-level atomic configuration, including a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that optical bistability and multistability can be obtained by changing the relative phase of the driven fields and the intensity of the microwave field. In addition, we can switch optical bistability to optical multistability by adjusting the relative phase of the driven fields or vice versa, and the threshold can be controlled via changing the parameters of the scheme.

Stability and Group Index Switching in a Four-Level Atomic System

Hossein Jafarzadeh, Ahmadi Sangachin Elnaz, Seyyed Hossein Asadpour

A four-level atomic system is proposed for stability and group index switching in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence. It is found that the transition from optical bistability (OB) to optical multistability (OM) and subluminal to superluminal can be obtained simultaneously. It is shown that the relative phase between applied fields can affect the stability and group index behaviors of weak probe light in the medium. Our proposed model provides a new scheme for simultaneous switching from OB to OM and (sub-to-super) luminal light propagation in an atomic system.

Optical bistability and multistability in an open ladder-type atomic system

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, Hamid Reza Hamedi, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

A novel scheme is proposed for controlling the optical bistability and multistability in an atomic system. In an open ladder-type three-level atomic system, it is shown that, by adjusting the ratio between atomic injections and exit rates from the cavity, the intensity threshold of optical bistability can be controlled. The effect of incoherent pumping field and spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on optical bistability for different values of exit rates is also discussed. It is found that SGC makes the medium phase dependent, so the optical bistability and multistability threshold can be controlled via relative phase between applied fields. Moreover, it is shown that the optical bistability can be switched to optical multistability, which is favorable for the next generation of all-optical systems and quantum networks.

ANALYSIS OF THE OPTICAL MULTISTABILITY BEHAVIOR IN A FOUR-LEVEL ATOMIC SYSTEM WITH AN ASSISTING MICROWAVE-DRIVEN FIELD

Zhiping Wang, Shuangxi Zhang

We show the steady-state optical multistability (OM) behavior in a four-level atomic system inside a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that the intensity and the detunings of the fields can affect the optical multistability behavior dramatically, which can be used to control the transition from OM to OB or vice versa without the need to resort to the effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC). The effect of the atomic cooperation parameter on OM is also studied. Our scheme may be used for building more efficient all-optical switches and logic-gate devices for optical computing and quantum information processing.

We investigate optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors in a triply driven five-level atomic system. It is shown that the system has bistable behavior and can be controlled by intensity of applied fields. We find that OB switches to OM via interference induced among the Rabi-split resonance. We consider a superposed one-dimension standing wave, generated by two optical fields, and it is demonstrated that the OB and OM behaviors depend on the position of localized atoms as well as the relative phase of applied fields.

Controllable optical bistability and multistability in a double two-level atomic system

Jing Wu, Xin‐You Lü, Lili Zheng

We theoretically investigate the behaviour of optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) in a generic double two-level atomic system driven by two orthogonally polarized fields (a π-polarized control field and a σ-polarized probe field). It is found that the behaviour of OB can be controlled by adjusting the intensity or the frequency detuning of the control field. Interestingly enough, our numerical results also show that it is easy to realize the transition from OB to OM or vice versa by adjusting the relative phase between the control and probe fields. This investigation can be used for the development of new types of devices for realizing an all-optic switching process.
