Abstract

We investigate optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors in a triply driven five-level atomic system. It is shown that the system has bistable behavior and can be controlled by intensity of applied fields. We find that OB switches to OM via interference induced among the Rabi-split resonance. We consider a superposed one-dimension standing wave, generated by two optical fields, and it is demonstrated that the OB and OM behaviors depend on the position of localized atoms as well as the relative phase of applied fields.

Controllable optical bistability and multistability in a double two-level atomic system

Jing Wu, Xin‐You Lü, Lili Zheng

We theoretically investigate the behaviour of optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) in a generic double two-level atomic system driven by two orthogonally polarized fields (a π-polarized control field and a σ-polarized probe field). It is found that the behaviour of OB can be controlled by adjusting the intensity or the frequency detuning of the control field. Interestingly enough, our numerical results also show that it is easy to realize the transition from OB to OM or vice versa by adjusting the relative phase between the control and probe fields. This investigation can be used for the development of new types of devices for realizing an all-optic switching process.

Multiple spontaneously generated coherence and phase control of optical bistability and multistability in a tripod four-level atomic medium

Huijing Li, Hongjun Zhang, Hui Sun +3 more

Optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors induced by multiple spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) are investigated theoretically in a tripod four-level atomic scheme. It is found that OB or OM is sensitive to the SGC effects, and the thresholds of OB can be controlled via changing the strength of multiple SGC or the relative phases of the applied fields. In addition, we can switch OB to OM by adjusting the twofold relative phases of the applied fields or vice versa.

THE EFFECT OF DECAY-INDUCED INTERFERENCE ON THE PHASE CONTROL OF THE OPTICAL BISTABILITY (OB)

Mostafa Sahrai, Reza Kheradmand, N. SALAHSHOUR +1 more

This paper studies the optical bistability in a degenerate three-level Λ-type atomic system in a unidirectional optical ring cavity. The effect of quantum interference on the phase control of the optical bistabilty is then discussed. It is shown that the optical bistability changes with the intensity of coupling and the rate of an incoherent pumping field. The possibility of creating an optical multistability (OM) by the intensity of coupling field relative phase between the applied fields, and the rate of an incoherent pump field has also been discussed.

Optical bistability and multistability via amplitude and phase control in a Duplicated two-level system

Luling Jin, Zhongyao Feng

We investigate the optical bistability (OB) in a duplicated two-level system contained in a ring cavity. The atoms are driven by two orthogonally polarized fields with a relative phase. The OB behavior of such a system can be controlled by the amplitude and the relative phase of the coupling field, and it is possible to switch between bistability and multistability by adjusting the relative phase.

ANALYSIS OF THE OPTICAL MULTISTABILITY BEHAVIOR IN A FOUR-LEVEL ATOMIC SYSTEM WITH AN ASSISTING MICROWAVE-DRIVEN FIELD

Zhiping Wang, Shuangxi Zhang

We show the steady-state optical multistability (OM) behavior in a four-level atomic system inside a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that the intensity and the detunings of the fields can affect the optical multistability behavior dramatically, which can be used to control the transition from OM to OB or vice versa without the need to resort to the effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC). The effect of the atomic cooperation parameter on OM is also studied. Our scheme may be used for building more efficient all-optical switches and logic-gate devices for optical computing and quantum information processing.

Optical bistability forming due to a Rydberg state

Hamid Reza Hamedi, Mostafa Sahrai, Habib Khoshsima +1 more

We consider the behavior of optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) in a four-level atomic system involving a Rydberg state illuminated by a probe field as well as control and switching laser beams of larger intensity. When the switching field is absent, no OB arises because of the effect of Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency. However, by application of the switching field, the hysteresis cycle appears to give rise to optical bistability, thanks to Rydberg electromagnetically induced absorption. It is further demonstrated that one can efficiently modify the OB threshold via suitable choices of system-controlling parameters. Interestingly, it is observed that this model can produce an optical switching between OB and OM with potential applications in logic-gate devices for optical communication.
