Resonantly pumped Pr^3+-doped eye-safe laser at ~165 μm

Abstract

The first (to our knowledge) resonantly pumped laser action based on the 3F3-->3H4 transition of a Pr3+ ion is demonstrated. Pr3+-doped RbPb2Cl5 laser in-line pumped at approximately 1547 nm exhibited slope efficiency of over 21% at 1676.5 nm, despite the marginal quality of the laser sample available for this proof-of-concept experiment. This is believed to be the first non-Er3+ resonantly pumped approximately 1.6 microm eye-safe laser ever reported.

Resonantly-pumped Pr3+-doped eye-safe laser at ∼1.65 µm

N. Ter-Gabrielyan, T. Sanamyan, Mark A. DUBINSKII

This study presents a resonantly-pumped laser operation based on the inter-Stark transitions between the3F3and3H4multiplets of Pr3+ion. In this investigation, resonantly-pumped (at ~1547 nm), low quantum defect, laser action is achieved at 1676.5 nm from a Pr3+-doped RbPb2Cl5(RPC), low-phonon single crystal, which has recently been reported to lase at 2.5 mum. Hence, this type of laser holds promise for attaining a more efficient, resonantly-pumped, ultra-low quantum defect, eye-safe laser based on this gain medium. Furthermore, much lower nonradiative losses are expected, due to a very low phonon energy found in the Pr3+-doped material.

Single-frequency continuous-wave diode-pumped Pr3+:BaY2F8 orange laser

David Pabœuf, Oussama Mhibik, Fabien Bretenaker +3 more

The optical transition (3H4→1D2) of trivalent praseodymium embedded in crystalline matrices is a promising candidate for the realization of optically controlled quantum memories. This application requires a specific laser source emitting at 606 nm whose short-term linewidth is smaller than the linewidth of the considered ion, i.e., in the kHz range. Currently, this can only be addressed with a highly frequency stabilized dye laser [1]. In order to develop a simpler all-solid-state laser source suitable for coherent processing of Pr3+, we have explored Pr3+-doped fluoride materials which are well-known to offer a large range of available laser transitions in the visible spectrum ranging from blue to red [2] including an orange one around 600 nm, the pumping transitions lying in the blue between 445 and 480 nm. The recent developments of high power blue laser diodes emitting around 445 nm enable now the pumping of Pr-doped lasers in a compact setup. We present, here, the results we obtained with the diode pumping of a Pr3+:BaY2F8(Pr:BYF) crystal which emits at 607 nm.

Efficient Pr3+ laser material excitation by three-for-one cross-relaxation

Larry D. Merkle, Mark A. DUBINSKII

Pr3+ has three excited manifolds with the right energy spacings for emission between 3.5 and 5.5 microns, and can be excited efficiently using laser diodes developed for telecommunications. In the potential laser crystal Pr:RbPb2Cl5, we have observed strikingly strong fluorescence in this wavelength range following 1.53-micron excitation. Careful analysis indicates this must be due to two cross-relaxation processes that, together, efficiently convert one Pr3+ initially excited to the 3F3 manifold into three ions excited to the 3H5 manifold. This newly discovered “three-for-one” crossrelaxation process in Pr3+ may greatly enhance its utility as a mid-infrared laser ion.

Optical cooling in Er^3+:KPb_2Cl_5

Nicholas J. Condon, Steven R. Bowman, Shawn P. O'Connor +2 more

For the first time, optical cooling has been observed in the (4)I(13/2) excited state of erbium(III), using the low phonon energy host materal, potassium lead chloride (KPb(2)Cl(2)). Cooling was observed when samples were pumped at wavelengths longer than 1557 nm, 17 nm longer than the mean fluorescence wavelength of 1540 nm, which implies a nonradiative heat load of 1.1% for the (4)I(13/2)-->(4)I(15/2) transition. When pumped at 1568 nm, the total cooling efficiency was 0.38% of the absorbed power. These results highlight the potential of Er(3+):KPb(2)Cl(5) as a material for lasers operating in an eye safe spectral region.

New laser transition in a Pr3+:RbPb2Cl5crystal in the 2.3—2.5-μm range

Lasing at the 3 F 3 — 3 H 5 transition of the Pr 3+ ion in a nonhygroscopic Pr 3+ :RbPb 2 Cl 5 crystal is obtained for the first time at room temperature and the luminescent and lasing properties of the crystal are studied. The maximum differential cross section for stimulated emission in the 2.31—2.59-μm band of the 3 F 3 — 3 H 5 transition is found to be 1.7 × 10 -19 cm 2 and the lifetime of the 3 F 3 upper laser level is 0.11 ms.

Photon avalanche upconversion laser at 644 nm

Mark E. Koch, A. W. Kueny, William E. Case

We have obtained efficient laser action from Pr-doped LaCl3 using a novel pumping method. Pump energy is coupled into the crystal through Pr ions in an excited state rather than the ground state. Excited-state absorption is made possible by a regenerative feedback process (the photon avalanche) utilizing cross relaxation to convert the energy of a single ion in a high-lying state into energy shared by multiple lower lying state ions.
