Abstract

Lasing at the 3 F 3 — 3 H 5 transition of the Pr 3+ ion in a nonhygroscopic Pr 3+ :RbPb 2 Cl 5 crystal is obtained for the first time at room temperature and the luminescent and lasing properties of the crystal are studied. The maximum differential cross section for stimulated emission in the 2.31—2.59-μm band of the 3 F 3 — 3 H 5 transition is found to be 1.7 × 10 -19 cm 2 and the lifetime of the 3 F 3 upper laser level is 0.11 ms.

Low-threshold lasing of LiYF4:Pr3+crystals in the 0.72 μm range as a result of flashlamp pumping at 300 K

А. А. Каминский, A.V. Pelevin

Low-threshold stimulated radiation emitted by Pr3+ ions in an LiYF4 crystal was observed for the first time at 300 K when the crystal was pumped by flashlamp radiation. The wavelength of the emitted radiation was 0.7206 μm and it was due to the 3P0→3P4 transition.

CW lasing in Yb3+: GGG crystals pumped at 0.925 μm

A M Belovolov, Mikhail I. Belovolov, Evgenii M Dianov +2 more

Single-mode cw lasing was obtained for the first time in Yb 3+ : GGG crystals at room temperature at 1.030 and 1.037 μm upon pumping Yb 3+ ions by a 0.925-μm neodymium-doped fibre laser. Lasing was observed at the transitions between the lower Stark sublevel of the 2 F 5/2 level and the upper Stark sublevels of the 2 F 7/2 ground state of Yb 3+ ions. The study of lasing characteristic showed that lasing occurs according to the four-level scheme. The lasing threshold with respect to the absorbed power was 85 mW and the slope lasing efficiency was 20%. Upon 1.7-W pumping, the output power of 310 mW was achieved with the output resonator mirror with the transmission coefficient of 1%. The effective cross section of the lasing transition was 0.9 × 10 -20 cm 2 .

Optical superradiance in a Pr3+:LaF3crystal

Optical superradiance was experimentally obtained for the first time on the 3 P 0 — 3 H 4 (0) transition in a Van Vleck paramagnet — a Pr 3+ :LaF 3 crystal. Superradiance at a wavelength of 477.7 nm was emitted by a sample 8 mm long, with resonant absorption coefficient α=4.7 cm -1 , excited by 10-ns laser pulses at a temperature of 2.2 K.

Stimulated emission from PrCl3

K. R. German, Alvin E. Kiel, Howard J. Guggenheim

We have investigated the fluorescent and stimulated emission properties of PrCl3 as a function of the pump laser wavelength, pump power, and temperature. The previously reported laser emission at 645.2 nm has been studied at 295°K and at lower temperatures. At low temperatures we have observed stimulated emission at three new wavelengths, 616.8, 529.8, and 489.2 nm. The linewidths and lifetimes of various optical transitions have been measured and related to the observed optical gain at the above wavelengths. We have also observed stimulated output in 1% Pr in LaCl3.

Cross relaxation and upconversion coefficients of the mid-infrared transitions of Pr3+:LaCl3

Sean M. Kirkpatrick, Steven R. Bowman, L. Brandon Shaw +1 more

Short pulse laser-induced fluorescence experiments on the lowest-energy electronic states (υ<10−4 cm−1) of trivalent praseodymium ions are reported. Crystals of lanthanum trichloride with a range of Pr3+ concentrations were examined. We compute cross relaxation and upconversion coefficients for the metastable energy levels using a standard rate equation analysis. The limitations of the rate equation approach are examined with a focus on the underlying dynamics of this rare-earth system. The implications of these results for laser emission in the 1.3–7.2 μm spectral range are discussed.
