Abstract

In this paper, we propose a kind of degenerate optical parametric oscillator below threshold and use the thin crystal approximation to analyze the quantum noise reduction of the spectrum emitted from this cavity, and get the relation between the squeezing level and the pump field or the cavity detuning. We found that better squeezing level could be obtained only by properly choosing the phase of the local field, the amplitude of the pump field and the cavity detuning of the confocal cavity.

Improving quantum-noise reduction with spatially multimode squeezed light

Luigi A. Lugiato, Philippe Grangier

We consider the squeezed vacuum state emitted by a degenerate optical parametric oscillator below threshold. We show, by using a confocal cavity and an appropriate matching lens, that the observed level of squeezing can become largely independent of the spatial intensity configuration of the local-oscillator field.

Multimode squeezing properties of a confocal optical parametric oscillator: Beyond the thin-crystal approximation

L. Lopez, Sylvain Gigan, Nicolas Treps +3 more

Up to now, transverse quantum effects (usually labeled as ``quantum imaging'' effects) which are generated by nonlinear devices inserted in resonant optical cavities have been calculated using the ``thin-crystal approximation,'' i.e., taking into account the effect of diffraction only inside the empty part of the cavity, and neglecting its effect in the nonlinear propagation inside the nonlinear crystal. We introduce in the present paper a theoretical method which is not restricted by this approximation. It allows us in particular to treat configurations closer to the actual experimental ones, where the crystal length is comparable to the Rayleigh length of the cavity mode. We use this method in the case of the confocal optical parametric oscillator, where the thin-crystal approximation predicts perfect squeezing on any area of the transverse plane, whatever its size and shape. We find that there exists in this case a ``coherence length'' which gives the minimum size of a detector on which perfect squeezing can be observed, and which gives therefore a limit to the improvement of optical resolution that can be obtained using such devices.

Squeezing in an optical parametric oscillator with arbitrary mirror out-coupling

Sudhakar Prasad, Bartram S. Abbott

We consider here the problem of quantum noise in light produced by an optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold inside a singlesided cavity. By employing the correct boundary conditions on quantum fields at the output mirror, a procedure that is valid for arbitrary mirror transmission, we derive exact expressions for quantum noise reduction for arbitrary pump phase and mirror out-coupling. We find that for a given out-coupling, squeezing of quantum noise in the intracavity field increases to a final value of 50%, as the pump intensity is increased and the oscillation threshold is approached. The output field on the other hand exhibits perfect squeezing of noise in one quadrature of its central Fourier component at threshold regardless of the mirror out-coupling. The present approach, which is based on boundary conditions, is quite general and applicable to any matter-field interaction problem inside a cavity. In fact, we have previously employed this approach in the calculation of the intrinsic linewidth of a laser with arbitrary out-coupling.1

Generation of a frequency comb of squeezing in an optical parametric oscillator

A. E. Dunlop, Elanor H. Huntington, C. C. Harb +1 more

The multimode operation of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating below threshold is calculated. We predict that squeezing can be generated in a comb that is limited only by the phase matching bandwidth of the OPO. Effects of technical noise on the squeezing spectrum are investigated. It is shown that maximal squeezing can be obtained at high frequency even in the presence of seed laser noise and cavity length fluctuations. Furthermore the spectrum obtained by detuning the laser frequency off OPO cavity resonance is calculated.

Quantum noise and squeezing in an optical parametric oscillator with arbitrary output-mirror coupling

Bartram S. Abbott, Sudhakar Prasad

We consider here the problem of quantum noise in light produced by an optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold inside a single-sided cavity. By employing the correct boundary conditions on quantum fields at the output mirror, a procedure that is valid for arbitrary mirror transmission, we derive exact expressions for quantum-noise reduction for arbitrary pump phase and output-mirror coupling. We find that for a given output-mirror power reflectance R, squeezing of quantum noise in the intracavity field increases to a final fractional value equal to R/(1+R) as the pump intensity is increased and the oscillation threshold is approached. The output field, on the other hand, exhibits perfect squeezing of noise in one quadrature of its central Fourier component at threshold regardless of the output-mirror coupling. The present approach, which is based on boundary conditions, is quite general and applicable to any matter-field interaction problem inside a cavity.

Spatial structure of a squeezed vacuum

Luigi A. Lugiato, A. Gatti

We analyze the quantum properties of the signal near field emitted by a degenerate parametric oscillator below threshold, including diffraction and its effects on the threshold for signal generation. The field is probed by a local oscillator field of arbitrary spatial configuration. The results are expressed in terms of an appropriate spectrum which describes how the level of squeezing varies with the angle from the direction of propagation. The results hold for cavities both with plane and with spherical mirrors.
