Abstract

Up to now, transverse quantum effects (usually labeled as ``quantum imaging'' effects) which are generated by nonlinear devices inserted in resonant optical cavities have been calculated using the ``thin-crystal approximation,'' i.e., taking into account the effect of diffraction only inside the empty part of the cavity, and neglecting its effect in the nonlinear propagation inside the nonlinear crystal. We introduce in the present paper a theoretical method which is not restricted by this approximation. It allows us in particular to treat configurations closer to the actual experimental ones, where the crystal length is comparable to the Rayleigh length of the cavity mode. We use this method in the case of the confocal optical parametric oscillator, where the thin-crystal approximation predicts perfect squeezing on any area of the transverse plane, whatever its size and shape. We find that there exists in this case a ``coherence length'' which gives the minimum size of a detector on which perfect squeezing can be observed, and which gives therefore a limit to the improvement of optical resolution that can be obtained using such devices.

Multimode quantum properties of a self-imaging optical parametric oscillator: Squeezed vacuum and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-beams generation

L. Lopez, Bénoît Chalopin, Arnaud Rivière De La Souchère +3 more

We investigate the spatial quantum properties of the light emitted by a perfectly spatially degenerate optical parametric oscillator (self-imaging optical parametric oscillator). We show that this device produces local squeezing for areas bigger than a coherence area that depends on the crystal length and pump width. Furthermore, it generates local EPR beams in the far field. We show, calculating the eigenmodes of the system, that it is highly multimode for realistic experimental parameters.

Quantum imaging with continuous variables

Sylvain Gigan, V. Delaubert, M. Martinelli +3 more

The visibility and quality of optical images is ultimately limited not by diffraction but by the quantum noise affecting each pixel of a detector. Multimode non-classical states of light, characterized by spatial quantum correlation or local reduced quantum noise, permit in principle to go beyond the standard quantum limit and therefore to improve transverse optical resolution. It has been predicted that Optical Parametric Oscillators (OPO) operating simultaneously on many transverse modes are good candidates for generating multimode non-classical states of light. We perform an experiment showing that a c.w. confocal OPO above threshold emits such states. Below threshold, the OPO is turned to a multimode optical parametric amplifier.

Noiseless amplification of images and multimode squeezed states produced by a confocal parametric oscillator

Summary form only given. We propose a scheme for a parametric image amplifier consisting of a parametric medium enclosed in a confocal resonator. In a ideal confocal resonator an infinite number of transverse modes, having a definite parity with respect to the inversion of the spatial transverse coordinates, are degenerate in frequency. As a consequence we show that a confocal parametric oscillator operating below threshold is capable of amplifying a coherent optical image as a whole, provided the input image has an even (odd) distribution in the transverse plane.

Multimode squeezed light generation in a three-plane-mirror confocal cavity

In this paper, we propose a kind of degenerate optical parametric oscillator below threshold and use the thin crystal approximation to analyze the quantum noise reduction of the spectrum emitted from this cavity, and get the relation between the squeezing level and the pump field or the cavity detuning. We found that better squeezing level could be obtained only by properly choosing the phase of the local field, the amplitude of the pump field and the cavity detuning of the confocal cavity.
