Abstract

Summary form only given. We propose a scheme for a parametric image amplifier consisting of a parametric medium enclosed in a confocal resonator. In a ideal confocal resonator an infinite number of transverse modes, having a definite parity with respect to the inversion of the spatial transverse coordinates, are degenerate in frequency. As a consequence we show that a confocal parametric oscillator operating below threshold is capable of amplifying a coherent optical image as a whole, provided the input image has an even (odd) distribution in the transverse plane.

Parametric Image Amplification in Optical Cavities

S. Mancini, A. Gatti, L.A. Lugiato

We show the possibility of noiseless amplification of an optical image in cavities containing a parametric oscillator. We consider a confocal ring cavity with plane mirrors and compare with the case of planar cavity. In the latter case the system operates with severe spatial limitations, while in the confocal case, there is the possibility of preserving the signal-to-noise ratio while amplifying uniformely the entire image.

Quantum Processing of Images by Continuous Wave Optical Parametric Amplification

L. Lopez, Nicolas Treps, Bénoît Chalopin +2 more

We have experimentally shown that a degenerate optical parametric oscillator pumped by a cw laser, inserted in a cavity having degenerate transverse modes such as a hemiconfocal or confocal cavity, and operating below the oscillation threshold in the regime of phase sensitive amplification, is able to process input images of various shapes in the quantum regime. More precisely, when deamplified, the image is amplitude squeezed; when amplified, its two polarization components are intensity correlated at the quantum level. In addition, the amplification process of the images is shown to take place in the noiseless regime.

Quantum amplification of images in a c.w. optical parametric amplifier

Sylvain Gigan, L. Lopez, Nicolas Treps +2 more

In the experiment presented, a transverse multimode OPO pumped either below or above threshold in order to observe spatial quantum properties are realized. In the continuous variable regime, transverse quantum effects (spatial correlations, spatial squeezing or noiseless amplification of images), are predicted be observable in such OPO/OPA. The key point in this experiment is the use of transverse degenerate cavities, having a non negligible spatial bandwidth, and allowing the resonance of many transverse modes.

Spatial quantum optical properties of c.w. Optical Parametric Amplification

We have experimentally studied parametric amplification in the c.w. regime using a type-II parametric medium inserted in a transverse-degenerate resonant optical cavity. We demonstrate that this device is able to amplify either in the phase insensitive or phase sensitive way single mode beams and multimode images. We have also observed various multimode correlation and squeezing effects on the amplified output of this device.
