Abstract

uorescence at 852.12 nm was monitored. The linear polarization degree for the 6s 2 S1=2 ! 8p 2 P3=2 ! 5d 2 S5=2 transition was measured in the presence of argon gas at various pressures. From the measurement, we obtained the collisional cross section (disalignment cross section) value in the 8p 2 P3=2 level cesium.

Measurements of collisional depolarization cross sections play an important role in gaining valuable information about the interaction between inert and rare-gas atoms.A key element in understanding collisional dynamics is the detailed analysis of the polarization of the emitted photons. In order to investigate the collisional cross section of the excited J=1/2 cesium atoms, by collisions with the ground level argon atoms, experimental measurements were made studying circular polarization spectra.Orientation in the J=1/2 level was optically induced by circularly polarized light with a positive helicity.A two-photon double-resonance (6s 2 S 1/2 →6p 2 P 1/2 → 10s 2 S 1/2 ) condition was achieved using nanosecond pulsed dye lasers, and the intensity of the cascade fluorescence was monitored in the presence of argon atoms ranging from 10 -4 torr to 100 torr.

We studied the effect of depolarization of the atomic cesium in the 6p 2 P 3/2 level by using two-photon two-color nano-second pulse lasers in collision with krypton buffer gas at various pressures. We used linearly polarized dye lasers at 852.112 nm and at 603.409 nm wavelengths for the 6s 2 S 1/2 → 6p 2 P 3/2 → 10s 2 S 1/2 transition.Excitation of the ground state cesium atoms by linearly polarized light produces an electric quadrupole moment in the excited state. The polarization degree of the emission spectra was measured and was used to calculate the alignment (electric quadrupole moment) in the 6p 2 P 3/2 state.Further, the collisional depolarization effect on the linear polarization was measured at various buffer gas pressures from the spectra and it showed a strong pressure dependence on the polarization spectrum. Finally, we extracted the collisional depolarization cross-section of the 6p 2 P 3/2 Cs atoms in collision with Kr from the measured linear polarization spectrum.

Energy transfer in collisions between two Cs(5D) atoms

Yifan Shen

Using stepwise excitation of the cesium 8S atoms level in Cs vapor, several collisional and radiative processes have been identified from the intensities and spectra of the Cs fluorescence. The 5D state was populated by 8S→7P→5D transitions. In cesium densities 1016-1017?cm-3,the energy pooling collisions 5D+5D→nL+6S(nL=9D,11S,7F are studied.Since the 5D→6P(3.0-3.6 μm) fluorescence could not be detected with this experiment, the EP rate coefficients have been measured relative to the known rate coefficient of the collision,i.e.,6P+5D→6S+7D.The excited-atom density and spatial distribution were mapped by monitoring the absorption of a counterpropagating single-mode laser beam, tuned to 6P3/2→8S1/2 transition, which could be translated parallel to the pump beam. The excited atom densities are combined with measured fluorescene ratios to determine cross sections for the cesium energy pooling process. The average values(in units of 10-10?cm3s-1) for nL=9D,11S and 7F are 8.4±4.2,7.3±3.6,and 9.7±4.8,respectively.Influence on k11S and k7F of the energy transfer process 11S+6S7F+6S is also dicussed.

Collisional excitation transfer in optically pumped atomic copper vapor

Nackchin Sung, Jin J. Kim

Recently we reported the observation of stimulated emission in atomic copper vapor that is excited by a resonant tunable laser beam.1 One important result obtained in the experiment is that the two upper levels involved in the laser transitions of the atomic copper vapor are collisionally mixed in stimulated emission. This observation is particularly important for studies of high-pressure transverse-discharge copper vapor lasers. We conducted an optical pumping experiment to measure the collisional mixing cross sections (CMCSs) below the threshold of stimulated emission. We observed all four transitions: 2P1/2−2S1/2 (327.4 nm); 2P3/2−2S1/2 (324.8 nm); 2P1/2−2D3/2 (578.2 nm); and 2P3/2−2D5/2 (510.6 nm), when either one of the two levels 2P3/2,1/2 was excited. From the measurements of the intensities of the resonantly excited and sensitized fluorescences, we estimate the CMCSs Q34(2P1/2→2P3/2) and Q43(2P1/2←2P3/2) at 2 × 10−16 and 1.3 × 10-16 cm2 for Cu + Ne collisions, respectively. We also measured the linewidths of the optically pumped green and yellow lasers as a function of the buffer gas pressure and of detuning of the pump frequency. We observe that the linewidths change in an interesting way, which can be explained in terms of the gain narrowing.
