Abstract

Many organic materials exhibit large nonlinearity. Bistability in nitrobenzene1 and dye2 has been observed. The first observation of optical bistability and multistability in Canada balsam is reported here. This kind of optical bistability device (OBD) is economical; solidification makes it convenient in operation. It may be useful in optical computing systems.

Research Works on Optical Bistability in China

Chunfei Li

The first optical bistable device in China has been demonstrated by Chun-fei Li in Harbin, 1979. It is a hybrid device with nonlinear feedback. Since then his research group began to study optical bistability and its related subjects until now. In the early works they performed several new types of the hybrid OBD using LiNbO3 crystal. They systematically studied static and dynamic stabilities in OB and successfuly demonstrated bifurcations and chaos using a hybrid device with delayed feedback. From 1984 to 1986 they concentrated on narrow gap semiconductor OBD, and obtained dispersive and absorptive combined OB in InSb and optical ns pulse reshape effects using a HgCdTe etalon. They have also observed OB using liquid crystal nonlinear coupling waveguid and OB in liquid suspension of gold particles. They have used dye-filled etalons and light emitting diode hybrid OBD to demonstrated verious optical logics. Recently they have obtained a optical full adder with two ZnS interference filter OBDs.

Recent advances in optical testability

Optical bistability can be obtained in nonlinear materials either with Fabry-Perot mirrors or without external feedback. When a material is placed between partially reflecting mirrors, a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon is formed with the etalon providing an external feedback. Optical bistability and gating occur as a result of a shift in the Fabry-Perot peak when the light intensity is increased (or when a second laser beam is introduced into the cavity). Optical bistability with the external feedback mechanism has been observed in many semiconductors such as bulk GaAs, GaAs-AIGaAs multiple-quantum-well (MQW) structures, InSb, InAs, CdS, CdHgTe, GaSe, and CuCI.

Abstract Previous observations of optical bistability in nonlinear etalons of ZnS, CuCl and GaAs are summarized. Emphasis is placed upon recent results in GaAs: similar room-temperature optical bistability at powers under 10 mW in bulk and multiple quantum-well etalons; room-temperature bistability achieved with a diode laser as a light source; NOR and other logic operations; optical fibre signal regeneration and continuous wave operation.

Thermally induced optical bistability and self-oscillation in a nonlinear etalon filled with optical adhesive

Hong Jin Kong, Wol Yon Hwang

We report the optical bistability and the self-oscillation of a nonlinear Fabry–Perot etalon filled with Norland optical adhesive 81. A normal and an inverted bistable loop were observed for a short (80msec) and a long (1.2sec) input optical pulse duration, respectively. The self-oscillation properties depended sensitively on the substrate and the spacer thicknesses. The measured self-oscillation period became longer with an increase of the spacer thickness and was in the range o 0.2 to 3 seconds. The inversion of the bistable loop, and the self-oscillation in this experiment can be explained by the competition between the fast thermal refractive index change and the slow linear thermal expansion of the etalon.
