Prospect of optical frequency standard based on a Ca+43 ion

Masatoshi Kajita, Ying Li, Kensuke Matsubara +2 more

An optical frequency standard based on the $S\text{\ensuremath{-}}D$ transition of trapped $^{43}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ is possible by using just laser diodes for cooling and probing. We discuss two open problems related to the feasibility of this frequency standard, the attainable frequency uncertainty and the method of initial-state preparation. The uncertainty of the clock transition frequency can be so small as $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}15}$. Using a laser system consisting of three lasers at different detunings and polarizations, the ion can be cooled down to the Lamb-Dicke regime and then prepared in the $m=0$ state within a period much shorter than the cooling period without being heated. The details of our numerical simulation are described.

An optical frequency/wavelength standard using the high line Q/sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/ transition of Ca/sup +/ confined in a RF trap and laser cooled is discussed according to the following points: optical excitation scheme to cool the ions and probe the clock transition of an odd isotope of Ca/sup +/ and feasibility of the production of the optical excitations from laser diodes.>

We report progress on /sup 115/In/sup +/ and /sup 137/Ba/sup +/ single ion optical frequency standards using all solid-state sources. Both are free from quadrupole field shifts and together enable a search for drift in fundamental constants.

Development of optical frequency standards based upon the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/ transition in /sup 88/Sr/sup +/ and /sup 87/Sr/sup +/

Optical frequency standards, based on the 674 nm transition in /sup 88/Sr/sup +/ and /sup 87/Sr/sup +/ are being developed. Zeeman components in two /sup 88/Sr/sup +/ traps were compared, with stabilities of 100 Hz measured at a few tens of seconds. /sup 87/Sr/sup +/ offers "clock" transitions with no first-order Zeeman shifts and laser cooled /sup 87/Sr/sup +/ ions have been observed.

We are proceeding with a development of an optical frequency standard using a2Sfrac12-2D5/2electric quadrupole transition of Ca+ions in a small radio-frequency trap. We have theoretically confirmed that an uncertainty of-15is attainable in measurement of the2Sfrac12-2D5/2transition frequency. Experimentally, we have developed stable laser-diode systems and observed the quantum jump of single40Ca+ions to the2D5/2state

Development of an optical frequency standard based upon the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/ transition in Sr/sup +/

Recent work is presented on the development of an optical frequency standard, based on the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/ transition at 674 nm in /sup 88/Sr/sup +/. Work on characterising the probe laser is also presented and the observed linewidth of one of the /spl Delta/m=0 Zeeman components of the 674 nm transition is 290 Hz. Two traps have been operated simultaneously and a null offset between them confirmed at the 3 parts in 10/sup 13/ level. The feasibility of cooling and probing /sup 87/Sr/sup +/ is also discussed.
