Abstract

We introduce a variational framework for approximating the time-evolution operator $\hat{U}(t)$ within a physically motivated operator manifold, reformulating quantum dynamics as a tractable problem in operator space using stationary action principle. For periodically driven systems, the resulting approximate evolution operator directly yields an effective Floquet Hamiltonian, offering a non-perturbative alternative to conventional expansion-based methods. The framework is systematically improvable by enlarging the operator pool and naturally incorporates symmetries and physical constraints. When the operator manifold is chosen from the terms of a truncated Magnus expansion, the variational procedure effectively resums the Magnus series within the restricted space, significantly enhancing accuracy. We benchmark the approach on the driven Rabi model, the driven Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, and the one-dimensional driven Ising chain, yielding effective Floquet Hamiltonians that are systematically more accurate than low-order Magnus expansions, particularly in regimes where the latter converge poorly, and illustrating applicability to systems with exponentially large Hilbert spaces. Although we focus here on Floquet systems, the formalism applies equally to generic time-dependent Hamiltonians, providing a versatile tool for non-equilibrium quantum dynamics.

The Floquet-Magnus expansion of unbounded operators

Daniel Burgarth, Robin Hillier, Davide Lonigro +1 more

The Floquet-Magnus expansion is a widely used tool to derive effective descriptions of time-periodic quantum systems by approximating their dynamics with a time-independent Hamiltonian. However, its standard formulation is, strictly speaking, restricted to bounded Hamiltonians. In this work, we extend its definition and analysis to a broad class of time-periodic unbounded Hamiltonians. Our approach is based on an a priori distinct nonperturbative framework for the construction of effective Hamiltonians, which we show to reproduce the Floquet-Magnus expansion. A particular strength of our framework is that it allows us to prove that the resulting effective dynamics approximates the original time evolution propagators to arbitrary order in the high-frequency limit without requiring convergence of the Floquet-Magnus expansion, a condition that is already highly restrictive even in the bounded setting. We illustrate the scope of the method on representative models: the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian in the interaction picture, and the periodically driven quantum harmonic oscillator.

High-frequency approximation for periodically driven quantum systems from a Floquet-space perspective

André Eckardt, Egidijus Anisimovas

We derive a systematic high-frequency expansion for the effective Hamiltonian and the micromotion operator of periodically driven quantum systems. Our approach is based on the block diagonalization of the quasienergy operator in the extended Floquet Hilbert space by means of degenerate perturbation theory. The final results are equivalent to those obtained within a different approach (Rahav et al 2003 Phys.Rev. A 68 013820), (Goldman and Dalibard 2014 Phys.Rev. X 4 031027) and can also be related to the Floquet-Magnus expansion (Casas et al 2001 J. Phys.A 34 3379).We discuss that the dependence on the driving phase, which plagues the latter, can lead to artifactual symmetry breaking. The high-frequency approach is illustrated using the example of a periodically driven Hubbard model. Moreover, we discuss the nature of the approximation and its limitations for systems of many interacting particles.

Krylov Complexity for Time-Dependent Hamiltonians

Amin Faraji Astaneh, Parsa Kafashi

We investigate Krylov spread complexity for states evolving under time-dependent Hamiltonians. For periodically driven systems, we formulate the problem within Floquet theory and show how the Magnus expansion provides a systematic approximation when the Floquet Hamiltonian is not available in closed form. We then extend this framework beyond periodic driving and demonstrate that, in addition to the globally truncated Magnus expansion, a piecewise Magnus expansion provides a reliable method when the global expansion loses convergence or accuracy. Our results provide practical tools for analyzing complexity growth in a broad class of time-dependent quantum systems.

Floquet analysis of a quantum system with modulated periodic driving

Viktor Novičenko, Egidijus Anisimovas, Gediminas Juzeliūnas

We consider a quantum system periodically driven with a strength which varies slowly on the scale of the driving period. The analysis is based on a general formulation of the Floquet theory relying on the extended Hilbert space. It is shown that the dynamics of the system can be described in terms of a slowly varying effective Floquet Hamiltonian that captures the long-term evolution, as well as rapidly oscillating micromotion operators. We obtain a systematic high-frequency expansion of all these operators. Generalizing the previous studies, the expanded effective Hamiltonian is now time dependent and contains extra terms appearing due to changes in the periodic driving. The same applies to the micromotion operators which exhibit a slow temporal dependence in addition to the rapid oscillations. As an illustration, we consider a quantum-mechanical spin in an oscillating magnetic field with a slowly changing direction. The effective evolution of the spin is then associated with non-Abelian geometric phases reflecting the geometry of the extended Floquet space. The developed formalism is general and also applies to other periodically driven systems, such as shaken optical lattices with a time-dependent shaking strength, a situation relevant to the cold-atom experiments.

Sambe Approach to Floquet-Lindblad Open Quantum Systems

Andriani Keliri, Marco Schirò

We study driven and open quantum systems described by a time-periodic Lindblad master equation. In closed systems, the stroboscopic dynamics can always be described by an effective time-independent Floquet Hamiltonian; this idea is the basis of Floquet engineering. However, in the presence of dissipation, the existence of an effective time-independent Floquet Lindbladian is not guaranteed due to the non-unitary nature of the evolution. Using Floquet theory, we construct a well-defined time-independent Floquet Lindbladian in an extended Sambe-Liouville space, transforming the initial time-dependent problem to a static and non-Hermitian eigenvalue problem. For harmonic driving, we introduce a matrix continued fraction method to nonperturbatively resum multiphoton processes and construct an effective Floquet Lindbladian acting only on the physical Liouville space. Compared to other high-frequency expansions, this method has the advantage of providing the whole infinite series expansion at once. Using a resolvent formalism, we show how to obtain a spectral Floquet representation of correlation functions of an open quantum system. As an application, we consider a dissipating two-level system in a linearly polarized field and calculate its resonance fluorescence spectrum. Furthermore, we consider a parametrically driven quantum dot with pump and loss for which we calculate its spectral function and current-voltage characteristics.

Error bounds for the Floquet-Magnus expansion and their application to the semiclassical quantum Rabi model

Anirban Dey, Davide Lonigro, Kazuya Yuasa +1 more

We present a general, nonperturbative method for deriving effective Hamiltonians of arbitrary order for periodically driven systems based on an iterated integration-by-parts technique. The resulting family of effective Hamiltonians reproduces the well-known Floquet-Magnus expansion, now enhanced with explicit error bounds that quantify the distance between the exact and approximate dynamics at each order, even in cases where the Floquet-Magnus series fails to converge. We apply the method to the semiclassical Rabi model and provide explicit error bounds for both the Bloch-Siegert Hamiltonian and its third-order refinement. Our analysis shows that, while the rotating-wave approximation more accurately captures the true dynamics than the Bloch-Siegert Hamiltonian in most regimes, the third-order approximation ultimately outperforms both.
