Abstract

Diffeomorphism invariance is a central feature of general relativity. Without external reference structures, matter and geometry must be specified relationally, with respect to internal subsystems serving as reference frames. In quantum gravity, these reference systems must themselves be treated as quantum, motivating the use of quantum reference frames. In this work, we address how such a relational description could be formulated within linearized quantum gravity. To this purpose, we introduce quantum reference fields, i.e. sets of four dynamical scalar fields whose stress-energy tensors enter the gravitational constraints. These fields extend the notion of quantum reference frames to local field-theoretic reference systems, allowing matter and gravitational degrees of freedom to be described relationally with respect to physical quantum systems. By generalizing the perspective-neutral construction of quantum reference frames, we show that relational, gauge invariant observables admit reduced descriptions in the perspective of each quantum reference field, and we derive the unitary transformations relating them. The resulting unitary maps implement local quantum coordinate changes between different internal perspectives, and act on the linearized gravitational field with an analogous structure to a linearized diffeomorphism, but with the classical gauge parameter replaced by a physical quantum field. Finally, we construct a relational von Neumann-type measurement scheme, showing how the corresponding reduced observables can be accessed operationally from the perspective of a quantum reference field.

A change of perspective: switching quantum reference frames via a perspective-neutral framework

Augustin Vanrietvelde, Philipp A. Höhn, Flaminia Giacomini +1 more

Treating reference frames fundamentally as quantum systems is inevitable in quantum gravity and also in quantum foundations once considering laboratories as physical systems. Both fields thereby face the question of how to describe physics relative to quantum reference systems and how the descriptions relative to different such choices are related. Here, we exploit a fruitful interplay of ideas from both fields to begin developing a unifying approach to transformations among quantum reference systems that ultimately aims at encompassing both quantum and gravitational physics. In particular, using a gravity inspired symmetry principle, which enforces physical observables to be relational and leads to an inherent redundancy in the description, we develop a perspective-neutral structure, which contains all frame perspectives at once and via which they are changed. We show that taking the perspective of a specific frame amounts to a fixing of the symmetry related redundancies in both the classical and quantum theory and that changing perspective corresponds to a symmetry transformation. We implement this using the language of constrained systems, which naturally encodes symmetries. Within a simple one-dimensional model, we recover some of the quantum frame transformations of \cite{Giacomini:2017zju}, embedding them in a perspective-neutral framework. Using them, we illustrate how entanglement and classicality of an observed system depend on the quantum frame perspective. Our operational language also inspires a new interpretation of Dirac and reduced quantized theories within our model as perspective-neutral and perspectival quantum theories, respectively, and reveals the explicit link between them. In this light, we suggest a new take on the relation between a `quantum general covariance' and the diffeomorphism symmetry in quantum gravity.

Switching quantum reference frames in the N-body problem and the absence of global relational perspectives

Augustin Vanrietvelde, Philipp A. Höhn, Flaminia Giacomini

Given the importance of quantum reference frames (QRFs) to both quantum and gravitational physics, it is pertinent to develop a systematic method for switching between the descriptions of physics relative to different choices of QRFs, which is valid in both fields. Here we continue with such a unifying approach, begun in [Quantum 4, 225 (2020)], whose key ingredient is a symmetry principle, which enforces physics to be relational. Thanks to gauge related redundancies, this leads to a perspective-neutral structure which contains all frame choices at once and via which frame perspectives can be consistently switched. Formulated in the language of constrained systems, the perspective-neutral structure is the constraint surface classically and the gauge invariant Hilbert space in the Dirac quantized theory. By contrast, a perspective relative to a specific frame corresponds to a gauge choice and the associated reduced phase and Hilbert space. QRF changes thus amount to a gauge transformation. We show that they take the form of `quantum coordinate changes'. We illustrate this in a general mechanical model, namely the relational N -body problem in 3D space with rotational and translational symmetry. This model is especially interesting because it features the Gribov problem so that globally valid gauge fixing conditions, and hence relational frame perspectives, are absent. The constraint surface is topologically non-trivial and foliated by 3-, 5- and 6-dimensional gauge orbits, where the lower dimensional orbits are a set of measure zero. The N -body problem also does not admit globally valid canonically conjugate pairs of Dirac observables. These challenges notwithstanding, we exhibit how one can construct the QRF transformations for the 3-body problem. Our construction also sheds new light on the generic inequivalence of Dirac and reduced quantization through its interplay with QRF perspectives.

(Quantum) reference frames, relational observables, gauge reduction and physical interpretation

Thomas Thiemann

It is mandatory to know how to operationally define and translate a reference frame into mathematics, in order that a physical interpretation of theory calculations in terms of observational data is possible. The situation is particularly challenging for gauge systems such as General Relativity where spacetime coordinates are subject to spacetime diffeomorphisms considered as gauge transformations turning coordinates into non-observables. This motivates the idea of operationally defined (material) reference frames which specify coordinates in terms of matter or geometry reference fields leading to the concept of relational observables, relational reference frames and gauge reduction. Upon quantisation, all fields become operator valued distributions. Now new conceptual and technical questions arise such as: Should one reduce before or after quantisation and how are the reference fields quantised respectively in either route? Is a reference frame itself subject to quantisation and how are different quantum reference frames related? How does the gauge reduction fit into this, i.e. how can it be that a certain reference field is considered a non-observable in one reference frame and an observable in another which upon quantisation even displays fluctuations? How precisely are gauge dependent fields interpreted in terms of the relational observables in a given reference frame? What is the relative dynamics, e.g. how exactly are physical Hamiltonians of two relational reference frames related? The present conceptual work addresses these and related questions in a non-perturbative field theory context of sufficient generality to cover General Relativity coupled to standard matter. A central role is played by the concept of the relational reference frame transformation (RRFT) for which a general formula is derived and its properties are explored.

Perspective-neutral approach to quantum frame covariance for general symmetry groups

Anne-Catherine de la Hamette, Thomas D. Galley, Philipp A. Höhn +2 more

In the absence of external relata, internal quantum reference frames (QRFs) appear widely in the literature on quantum gravity, gauge theories and quantum foundations. Here, we extend the perspective-neutral approach to QRF covariance to general unimodular Lie groups. This is a framework that links internal QRF perspectives via a manifestly gauge-invariant Hilbert space in the form of "quantum coordinate transformations", and we clarify how it is a quantum extension of special covariance. We model the QRF orientations as coherent states which give rise to a covariant POVM, furnishing a consistent probability interpretation and encompassing non-ideal QRFs whose orientations are not perfectly distinguishable. We generalize the construction of relational observables, establish a variety of their algebraic properties and equip them with a transparent conditional probability interpretation. We import the distinction between gauge transformations and physical symmetries from gauge theories and identify the latter as QRF reorientations. The "quantum coordinate maps" into an internal QRF perspective are constructed via a conditioning on the QRF's orientation, generalizing the Page-Wootters formalism and a symmetry reduction procedure. We find two types of QRF transformations: gauge induced "quantum coordinate transformations" as passive unitary changes of description and symmetry induced active changes of relational observables from one QRF to another. We reveal new effects: (i) QRFs with non-trivial orientation isotropy groups can only resolve isotropy-group-invariant properties of other subsystems; (ii) in the absence of symmetries, the internal perspective Hilbert space "rotates" through the kinematical subsystem Hilbert space as the QRF changes orientation. Finally, we invoke the symmetries to generalize the quantum relativity of subsystems before comparing with other approaches. [Abridged]

Quantum reference frames beyond subsystems: a reconstruction and generalization of the perspective-neutral framework

Stefan L. Ludescher, Manuel Mekonnen, Thomas D. Galley +1 more

We generalize the notion of quantum reference frames (QRFs) to cases where the frame does not necessarily correspond to a tensor factor subsystem, but to a covariant quantum instrument. This unlocks a variety of physical applications: "frames of labeling" for indistinguishable particles, suggesting explanations for the symmetrization postulate and the absence of parastatistics, and yielding a transparent description of the entanglement of bosons and fermions; and relational clocks reproducing the Schrödinger equation exactly even when all subsystems are interacting or when there are frequency superselection sectors. Our work generalizes the perspective-neutral approach to QRFs pioneered by Höhn and co-authors, which we reconstruct from a simple operational scenario. We give a resource-theoretic grounding of this framework, and show how the notion of completely covariant operations explains the relevance of the charge-zero sector and the pure-state transformation behavior across perspectives. This also suggests operational clarifications of some aspects of constraint quantization, e.g. of the meaning of constraint equations such as $C|ψ\rangle=0$. Some of our results, such as our generalization of relationalization maps to instruments, apply more broadly to other QRF frameworks too, and they contribute to bridging the gap between operational quantum information theory and the internal QRF research program.

Relational path integral, effective actions and quantum frame covariance in gravity

Sergio E. Aguilar-Gutierrez, Renata Ferrero, Philipp A. Hoehn +1 more

We propose a relational bundle-geometric formulation of the gravitational path integral by invoking the new tool of quantum reference frames (QRFs), which in gravity are gauge-covariant coordinate systems constructed from the available field content. Formulated in terms of relational (frame-dressed) observables, this yields a manifestly gauge-invariant path integral without ghosts and anomalies, and in which observables and their correlators are local to a frame. While eliminating the need for gauge fixing, it is equivalent to Faddeev-Popov versions in which the QRF is gauge-fixed, recovering certain previous proposals. A key feature is its covariance under QRF changes: it is a perspective-neutral path integral which encodes all internal QRF perspectives and the transformations between them. This leads to several qualitative predictions: local correlators and time evolution of relational observables in one QRF perspective become fuzzy in another, and a new spectrum of relational vacua arises. Comprised of frame-dependent no-boundary and asymptotic ground states, a vacuum from one perspective appears generally excited in another. Finally, we construct gauge-invariant, yet frame-dependent effective actions by coupling sources exclusively to relational observables, setting the stage for a relational definition of renormalization.
