Abstract

Treating reference frames fundamentally as quantum systems is inevitable in quantum gravity and also in quantum foundations once considering laboratories as physical systems. Both fields thereby face the question of how to describe physics relative to quantum reference systems and how the descriptions relative to different such choices are related. Here, we exploit a fruitful interplay of ideas from both fields to begin developing a unifying approach to transformations among quantum reference systems that ultimately aims at encompassing both quantum and gravitational physics. In particular, using a gravity inspired symmetry principle, which enforces physical observables to be relational and leads to an inherent redundancy in the description, we develop a perspective-neutral structure, which contains all frame perspectives at once and via which they are changed. We show that taking the perspective of a specific frame amounts to a fixing of the symmetry related redundancies in both the classical and quantum theory and that changing perspective corresponds to a symmetry transformation. We implement this using the language of constrained systems, which naturally encodes symmetries. Within a simple one-dimensional model, we recover some of the quantum frame transformations of \cite{Giacomini:2017zju}, embedding them in a perspective-neutral framework. Using them, we illustrate how entanglement and classicality of an observed system depend on the quantum frame perspective. Our operational language also inspires a new interpretation of Dirac and reduced quantized theories within our model as perspective-neutral and perspectival quantum theories, respectively, and reveals the explicit link between them. In this light, we suggest a new take on the relation between a `quantum general covariance' and the diffeomorphism symmetry in quantum gravity.

Switching quantum reference frames in the N-body problem and the absence of global relational perspectives

Augustin Vanrietvelde, Philipp A. Höhn, Flaminia Giacomini

Given the importance of quantum reference frames (QRFs) to both quantum and gravitational physics, it is pertinent to develop a systematic method for switching between the descriptions of physics relative to different choices of QRFs, which is valid in both fields. Here we continue with such a unifying approach, begun in [Quantum 4, 225 (2020)], whose key ingredient is a symmetry principle, which enforces physics to be relational. Thanks to gauge related redundancies, this leads to a perspective-neutral structure which contains all frame choices at once and via which frame perspectives can be consistently switched. Formulated in the language of constrained systems, the perspective-neutral structure is the constraint surface classically and the gauge invariant Hilbert space in the Dirac quantized theory. By contrast, a perspective relative to a specific frame corresponds to a gauge choice and the associated reduced phase and Hilbert space. QRF changes thus amount to a gauge transformation. We show that they take the form of `quantum coordinate changes'. We illustrate this in a general mechanical model, namely the relational N -body problem in 3D space with rotational and translational symmetry. This model is especially interesting because it features the Gribov problem so that globally valid gauge fixing conditions, and hence relational frame perspectives, are absent. The constraint surface is topologically non-trivial and foliated by 3-, 5- and 6-dimensional gauge orbits, where the lower dimensional orbits are a set of measure zero. The N -body problem also does not admit globally valid canonically conjugate pairs of Dirac observables. These challenges notwithstanding, we exhibit how one can construct the QRF transformations for the 3-body problem. Our construction also sheds new light on the generic inequivalence of Dirac and reduced quantization through its interplay with QRF perspectives.

Quantum reference frames: derivation of perspective-dependent descriptions via a perspective-neutral structure

Viktor Zelezny

In standard quantum mechanics, reference frames are treated as abstract entities. We can think of them as idealized, infinite-mass subsystems which decouple from the rest of the system. In nature, however, all reference frames are realized through finite-mass systems that are subject to the laws of quantum mechanics and must be included in the dynamical evolution. A fundamental physical theory should take this fact seriously. In this paper, we further develop a symmetry-inspired approach to describe physics from the perspective of quantum reference frames. We find a unifying framework allowing us to systematically derive a broad class of perspective dependent descriptions and the transformations between them. Working with a translational-invariant toy model of three free particles, we discover that the introduction of relative coordinates leads to a Hamiltonian structure with two non-commuting constraints. This structure can be said to contain all observer-perspectives at once, while the redundancies prevent an immediate operational interpretation. We show that the operationally meaningful perspective dependent descriptions are given by Darboux coordinates on the constraint surface and that reference frame transformations correspond to reparametrizations of the constraint surface. We conclude by constructing a quantum perspective neutral structure, via which we can derive and change perspective dependent descriptions without referring to the classical theory. In addition to the physical findings, this work illuminates the interrelation of first and second class constrained systems and their respective quantization procedures.

Quantum Reference Fields Transformations in Linearized Quantum Gravity

Lin-Qing Chen, Flaminia Giacomini

Diffeomorphism invariance is a central feature of general relativity. Without external reference structures, matter and geometry must be specified relationally, with respect to internal subsystems serving as reference frames. In quantum gravity, these reference systems must themselves be treated as quantum, motivating the use of quantum reference frames. In this work, we address how such a relational description could be formulated within linearized quantum gravity. To this purpose, we introduce quantum reference fields, i.e.,sets of four dynamical scalar fields whose stress-energy tensors enter the gravitational constraints. These fields extend the notion of quantum reference frames to local field-theoretic reference systems, allowing matter and gravitational degrees of freedom to be described relationally with respect to physical quantum systems whose states cannot be sharply peaked on definite field configurations. By generalizing the perspective-neutral construction of quantum reference frames, we show that relational, gauge invariant observables admit reduced descriptions in the perspective of each quantum reference field, and we derive the unitary transformations relating them. The resulting unitary maps implement local quantum coordinate changes between different internal perspectives, and act on the linearized gravitational field with an analogous structure to a linearized diffeomorphism, but with the classical gauge parameter replaced by a physical quantum field. Finally, we construct a relational von Neumann-type measurement scheme, showing how the corresponding reduced observables can be accessed operationally from the perspective of a quantum reference field.

Switching Quantum Reference Frames for Quantum Measurement

Jianhao M. Yang

Physical observation is made relative to a reference frame. A reference frame is essentially a quantum system given the universal validity of quantum mechanics. Thus, a quantum system must be described relative to a quantum reference frame (QRF). Further requirements on QRF include using only relational observables and not assuming the existence of external reference frame. To address these requirements, two approaches are proposed in the literature. The first one is an operational approach (F. Giacomini, et al, Nat. Comm. 10:494, 2019) which focuses on the quantization of transformation between QRFs. The second approach attempts to derive the quantum transformation between QRFs from first principles (A. Vanrietvelde, et al, Quantum 4:225, 2020). Such first principle approach describes physical systems as symmetry induced constrained Hamiltonian systems. The Dirac quantization of such systems before removing redundancy is interpreted as perspective-neutral description. Then, a systematic redundancy reduction procedure is introduced to derive description from perspective of a QRF. The first principle approach recovers some of the results from the operational approach, but not yet include an important part of a quantum theory - the measurement theory. This paper is intended to bridge the gap. We show that the von Neumann quantum measurement theory can be embedded into the perspective-neutral framework. This allows us to successfully recover the results found in the operational approach, with the advantage that the transformation operator can be derived from the first principle. In addition, the formulation presented here reveals several interesting conceptual insights. For instance, the projection operation in measurement needs to be performed after redundancy reduction, and the projection operator must be transformed accordingly when switching QRFs. These results represent one step forward in understanding how quantum measurement should be formulated when the reference frame is also a quantum system.

Quantum reference frames beyond subsystems: a reconstruction and generalization of the perspective-neutral framework

Stefan L. Ludescher, Manuel Mekonnen, Thomas D. Galley +1 more

We generalize the notion of quantum reference frames (QRFs) to cases where the frame does not necessarily correspond to a tensor factor subsystem, but to a covariant quantum instrument. This unlocks a variety of physical applications: "frames of labeling" for indistinguishable particles, suggesting explanations for the symmetrization postulate and the absence of parastatistics, and yielding a transparent description of the entanglement of bosons and fermions; and relational clocks reproducing the Schrödinger equation exactly even when all subsystems are interacting or when there are frequency superselection sectors. Our work generalizes the perspective-neutral approach to QRFs pioneered by Höhn and co-authors, which we reconstruct from a simple operational scenario. We give a resource-theoretic grounding of this framework, and show how the notion of completely covariant operations explains the relevance of the charge-zero sector and the pure-state transformation behavior across perspectives. This also suggests operational clarifications of some aspects of constraint quantization, e.g. of the meaning of constraint equations such as $C|ψ\rangle=0$. Some of our results, such as our generalization of relationalization maps to instruments, apply more broadly to other QRF frameworks too, and they contribute to bridging the gap between operational quantum information theory and the internal QRF research program.

Switching Internal Times and a New Perspective on the ‘Wave Function of the Universe’

Philipp A. Höhn

Despite its importance in general relativity, a quantum notion of general covariance has not yet been established in quantum gravity and cosmology, where, given the a priori absence of coordinates, it is necessary to replace classical frames with dynamical quantum reference systems. As such, quantum general covariance bears on the ability to consistently switch between the descriptions of the same physics relative to arbitrary choices of quantum reference system. Recently, a systematic approach for such switches has been developed. It links the descriptions relative to different choices of quantum reference system, identified as the correspondingly reduced quantum theories, via the reference-system-neutral Dirac quantization, in analogy to coordinate changes on a manifold. In this work, we apply this method to a simple cosmological model to demonstrate how to consistently switch between different internal time choices in quantum cosmology. We substantiate the argument that the conjunction of Dirac and reduced quantized versions of the theory defines a complete relational quantum theory that not only admits a quantum general covariance, but, we argue, also suggests a new perspective on the ‘wave function of the universe’. It assumes the role of a perspective-neutral global state, without immediate physical interpretation that, however, encodes all the descriptions of the universe relative to all possible choices of reference system at once and constitutes the crucial link between these internal perspectives. While, for simplicity, we use the Wheeler-DeWitt formulation, the method and arguments might be also adaptable to loop quantum cosmology.
