Abstract

We consider damped driven Maxwell-Bloch equations for a single-mode Maxwell field coupled to a two-level molecule. The equations are used for semiclassical description of the laser action. Our main result is the construction of solutions with single-frequency asymptotics of the Maxwell field in the case of quasiperiodic pumping. The asymptotics hold for solutions with harmonic initial values which are stationary states of averaged reduced equations in the interaction picture. We calculate all harmonic states and analyse their stability. Our calculations rely on the Hopf reduction by the gauge symmetry group U(1). The asymptotics follow by an extension of the averaging theory of Bogolyubov--Eckhaus--Sanchez-Palencia onto dynamical systems on manifolds.

Bifurcation analysis of a mean field laser equation

Franco Fagnola, Carlos M. Mora

We study the dynamics of the solution of a non-linear quantum master equation describing a simple laser under the mean field approximation. The quantum system is formed by a single mode optical cavity and a set of two level atoms that are coupled to two reservoirs. First, we establish the existence of a unique regular stationary state for the non-linear evolution equation under consideration. Second, we examine the free interaction solutions, i.e., the solutions to the non-linear quantum master equation that coincide with unitary evolutions generated by the Hamiltonian resulting from neglecting the interactions between the laser mode, atoms and the bath. We obtain that a family of non-constant free interaction solutions is born at the regular stationary state as a relevant parameter, which is denoted by $C_\mathfrak{b} $, passes through the critical value $1$. These free interaction solutions yield the periodic solutions of the Maxwell Bloch equations modeling our physical system in the framework of the semiclassical laser theory. Third, in case $ C_\mathfrak{b} < 1$ we deduce that the system converges exponentially fast to the equilibrium, and so the regular stationary state is a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium solution. Thus, the quantum system has a Hopf bifurcation at $C_\mathfrak{b} =1 $.

Semiclassical Theory of Amplification and Lasing

Germán J. de Valcárcel, Eugenio Roldán, Franco Prati

In this article we present a systematic derivation of the Maxwell-Bloch equations describing amplification and laser action in a ring cavity. We derive the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a two-level medium and discuss their applicability to standard three- and four-level systems. After discusing amplification, we consider lasing and pay special attention to the obtention of the laser equations in the uniform field approximation. Finally, the connection of the laser equations with the Lorenz model is considered.

On dynamical semigroup for damped driven Jaynes-Cummings equations

A. I. Komech, E. A. Kopylova

The article addresses the damped driven Jaynes-Cummings for quantised one-mode Maxwell field coupled to a two-level molecule. We consider a broad class of damping and pumping which are polynomial in the creation and annihilation operators. Our main result is the construction of a contraction dynamical semigroup in the Hilbert space of Hermitian Hilbert-Schmidt operators in the case of a nonpositive dissipation operator and time-independent pumping. All trajectories of the semigroup are generalised solutions to the Jaynes-Cummings equations. As a key example, we prove nonpositivity for the basic dissipation operator of Quantum Optics.

Semiclassical dye-laser equations and the unidirectional single-frequency operation

Hong Chuan Fu, Hermann Haken

A semiclassical description for dye lasers is proposed, where the energy-level diagram of the dye molecule is assumed to consist of a continuous bandlike ground state and an excited singlet state. Unidirectional single-frequency (s.f.) operation is discussed. The linear-stability analysis for this operation reveals a very low threshold instability, which may appear generally in practical lasers. The ratio of the instability threshold to the lasing threshold may be of any value greater than 1, depending mainly on the bandwidth and the distribution of the dipole moments on the band, but it is independent of the cavity loss. This instability may account for that observed in recent experiments by Hillman, Krasinki, Boyd, and Stroud [Phys. Rev. Lett. 52, 1605 (1984)]. A general approach to analyzing the linear stability of the s.f. operation of the Maxwell-Bloch equations is also proposed, which states that only the eigenvalues of a 2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2 matrix are relevant: one concerns the stability of the s.f. operation near the lasing threshold, the other determines the instability threshold of this operation.

On global dynamics for damped driven Jaynes-Cummings equations

A. I. Komech, E. A. Kopylova

The article concerns damped driven Jaynes-Cummings equation which describes quantised one-mode Maxwell field coupled to a two-level molecule. We consider a broad class of damping and pumping which are polynomial in the creation and annihilation operators, and their structures correspond to the theory of completely positive and trace preserving generators (CPTP) of Lindblad and Kossakowski & al. Our main result is the construction of global generalised solutions with values in the Hilbert space of nonnegative Hermitian Hilbert-Schmidt operators in the case of time-dependent pumping. The proofs rely on finite-dimensional approximations of the annihilation and creation operators.

Semiclassical dispersion theory of lasers

Nandor L. Balazs, I. Tobias

Abstract This present paper is an attempt to describe the operation of a laser by a method patterned closely after the classical theory of dispersion. There, the electromagnetic field is treated as a classical system interacting with a collection of classical harmonic oscillators which are at rest. In the present case the radiation field is still treated classically, but, in accordance with the correspondence principle, the oscillators are now virtual oscillators associated with the up-and-down transitions in effective two-state atoms which are described quantum mechanically. The atoms carrying these virtual oscillators are not at rest but move with different velocities. We show how the Lorentz averaging can be performed for such systems, and derive a closed set of equations linking the average electric field E, with the average polarization density P„ and the average population inversion density Mp associated with atoms moving with the velocity v. Next, we investigate the conditions for the existence of a steady state if pumping is present, and if the electric field is represented by a standing wave, or a travelling wave of a single frequency (single-mode case). It turns out that, notwithstanding the nonlinear nature of the equations, the steady-state conditions give a simple complex dispersion relation; moreover, the real and imaginary part of this dispersion relation are equivalent to the usual heuristic expressions which specify the operating frequency in terms of the index of refraction and cavity length, and which balance the gain against the losses. The single-mode case is analysed in detail without any smallness assumptions for the resultant intensity. The small-intensity case gives the usual results exhibiting the tuning dip. For high intensities the relative depth of the dip tends to zero. At the end of the paper we discuss proposed extensions and additional applications.
