Abstract

We discuss the exact quantization of general one-dimensional potentials in view of the exact-WKB formalism. Building on our previous work, we perform analytic continuations across different sectors via the complexification to the spectral (energy) parameter $u$ and identify continuous and discontinuous transitions of the exact spectrum for generic potentials. When the transition is discontinuous, it is characterized by the Stokes phenomena, inducing different exact (median) quantization conditions, thereby distinct trans-series structures valid in different sectors. We analyze two illustrative examples, namely asymmetric triple-well (ATW) and tilted double-well (TDW), and verify the general qualitative analysis by deriving exact (median) quantization conditions in each sector. Moreover, by obtaining the trans-series solutions for each system, we identify bion/bounce configurations and show that the trans-series of ATW is organized in accordance with the cluster expansion of the bion gas and there should exist a previously neglected complex saddle in the TDW system. These identifications further strengthen the link between path integral and exact-WKB formalisms, while also demonstrating the predictive power of the latter. In parallel, for the P-NP relations of genus-1 systems, we derive transformation rules between any perturbative and non-perturbative pair of WKB-cycles. Our results show that the entire resurgence data of a genus-1 system transforms only by the change of classical parameters, i.e. frequencies and bion/bounce actions, and the perturbative energy series. This also reveals the underlying reasons of the previously found $S$-duality transformations.

Exact WKB analysis of inverted triple-well: resonance, PT-symmetry breaking, and resurgence

Syo Kamata, Tatsuhiro Misumi, Cihan Pazarbaşı +1 more

We study non-Hermitian quantum mechanics of an inverted triple-well potential within the exact WKB framework. For a single classical potential, different Siegert boundary conditions define three distinct quantum problems: the PT-symmetric, resonance, and anti-resonance systems. For each case, we derive the exact quantization condition and construct the associated trans-series solution. By identifying the resurgent structures and cancellations in these non-Hermitian setups, we obtain the median-summed series, clarifying when the spectra are real or complex in accordance with the physical properties of each system. Establishing explicit links to the semi-classical path integral formalism, we elucidate the roles of bounce and bion configurations in these non-Hermitian systems. This analysis predicts PT-symmetry breaking, which we also verify numerically. Using the median quantization conditions, we prove the existence of this symmetry breaking and establish an exact equation for the exceptional point, which emerges as a remarkably simple algebraic relation between the bounce and bion actions. We further show that the median-summed non-perturbative correction to the spectrum vanishes at the exceptional point, while the resurgent structure survives through a universal minimal trans-series. For the resonance and anti-resonance systems, we find that the exact median-summed spectra are related by complex conjugation, representing time reversal in this setting, are necessarily complex, and do not exhibit an exceptional point. Although their spectra differ significantly from the PT-symmetric case, they share the same minimal trans-series. By maintaining explicit links with the path integral saddles and the formal theory of resurgence, our analysis provides a unified and general perspective on the quantization of non-Hermitian theories.

The Double Well Done Doubly-Well

Aurélien Dersy, Matthew D. Schwartz

The symmetric double-well potential is one of the simplest quantum-mechanical systems in which perturbative and non-perturbative physics are deeply entangled. Its energy levels have non-analytic expansions in inverse powers of the inter-well separation, with factorially growing coefficients, while the parity splitting is exponentially small and invisible to perturbation theory. Resurgence ties the two features together, organizing the exact spectrum into a single tightly-constrained trans-series. This paper gives a self-contained account of this trans-series from two complementary approaches: exact WKB and the Euclidean path integral, developed in a common notation with explicit calculations through the four-instanton level and three-loop order. In exact WKB, Stokes phenomena encoded in the Delabaere--Dillinger--Pham relations control the analytic continuation of the wavefunction past turning points. The quantization condition expressed in terms of Voros symbols then determines the full trans-series. The DDP relations are local and do not require knowing the global topology of the energy surface, but that surface is an elliptic curve. In the path integral, elliptic curves enter differently: the classical saddle points are doubly-periodic elliptic functions of Euclidean time, and Stokes phenomena play out within the finite-dimensional manifold of quasi-zero modes rather than through analytic continuation of the wavefunction. A Lefschetz thimble decomposition determines which saddles contribute, and the resulting partition function trans-series is much simpler than the energy trans-series: at each instanton order the $T$-dependence is a polynomial fixed by the quasi-zero-mode thimble integrals. Together, the two approaches deploy a shared mathematical infrastructure in complementary ways, showing that the double well is an ideal setting to explore resurgence.

Quantum geometry at arbitrary genus - I: Anharmonic potentials

Mustafa Türe, Mithat Ünsal

In quantum mechanics of genus-1 potentials, perturbation theory around the topologically trivial saddle and non-perturbative instanton saddle are constructively related via the P/NP relation. Whether such a relation persists for higher-genus potentials has remained an open problem. In this work, we resolve it using tools from complex algebraic geometry combined with exact WKB. The classical energy conservation relation $p^2 = 2(E-V(q))$ defines a genus-g Riemann surface $X$, whose periods are naturally organized by its Jacobian variety $J(X) = \mathbb{C}^{\text{g}}/Λ$ via the Abel-Jacobi map, and independently by the solution basis of the associated Picard-Fuchs equations. We show that the physically relevant, WKB-active cycles are generally related to the Picard-Fuchs basis by a linear transformation that lies in $\text{SL}(2\text{g},\mathbb{Z})$ but not in the symplectic group $\text{Sp}(2\text{g},\mathbb{Z})$ once $\text{g}\geq2$, in contrast to the genus-1 case, where the two groups coincide. This mismatch is the obstruction that has made an explicit higher-genus P/NP relation elusive. We show that it can be resolved by passing to a modified Riemann bilinear identity, built from a suitably transformed intersection matrix, which the WKB-active periods do satisfy exactly. The result is an all-orders quantum P/NP relation valid for potentials of arbitrary genus, which we derive explicitly for genus-2 (quintic and sextic) and genus-3 (septic and octic) anharmonic oscillators.

Exact Quantization Conditions

C. Rosenzweig, Joseph B. Krieger

The method of Froman and Froman for proving exact quantization conditions is reviewed. This formalism, unlike the usual WKB approximation to which it bears a close resemblance, requires consideration of the behavior of the potential everywhere it is defined. This approach leads to proofs that certain quantization conditions are exact without having to compare the results to solutions of the Schrödinger equation obtained by other means. Using the formalism, we prove the correctness of all previously known exact quantization rules for the one-dimensional and radial cases. Furthermore, it is shown that exact quantization rules can be proved for two other potentials. For one of these, no analytic solutions to the Schrödinger equation are known. For the latter case, the proof is checked by numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation for a special case.

Accuracy of the WKB Approximation: The Case of General Quartic Potential

Marko Vranivcar, Marko Robnik

We analyse the accuracy of the approximate WKB quantization for the case of general one-dimensional quartic potential. In particular, we are interested in the validity of semiclassically predicted energy eigenvalues when approaching the limit E→∞, and in the accuracy of low lying energy levels below the potential barrier in the case of generally asymmetric double-well quartic potential. In the latter case, using the standard WKB quantization an unnatural localization of eigenstates due to the negligence of tunneling is implied and thus the validity of semiclassics is uncertain. In all computations the higher order corrections to the leading semiclassical approximation are included using the complex contour integration technique. We show that these corrections can improve accuracy of semiclassical approximation greatly by many orders of magnitude.

Radial power-like potentials: from the Bohr-Sommerfeld $\ell \neq 0$ state energies to the exact ones

J. C. del Valle, A. V. Turbiner

Two new Bohr-Sommerfeld (B-S) type quantization conditions for $d$-dimensional radial potentials are proposed for non-singular and singular potentials, respectively. The power-like potentials \hbox{$V=\operatorname{sign}(m)\,r^m$} for $m=-3/2,-1,-1/2, 1,3,4,6$ and $V=\log r$ (that corresponds to $m=0$) are studied in detail for radial quantum numbers $n_r \in [0,100]$ and for angular momenta $\ell=1,2,3,4,5$ in dimensions $d=2,3$. It is shown that for large $n_r$ the B-S energies $E_{BS}$ always tend to the exact ones. For $m=2$ (the radial harmonic oscillator) and $m=-1$ (the $d$-dimensional analogue of the $3D$ Coulomb potential) the B-S spectrum coincides with the exact one for the first and second quantization conditions, respectively. In general, up to a small parametric shift of the radial quantum number, the analytic formulas for the energy spectrum can be written for arbitrary power-like potential. A comparison of $E_{BS}$ with the energies $E^{(L)}_{BS}$, obtained for the radial potentials modified by the Langer correction for $d=3$, are in good agreement in general: in detail, it was checked for the quartic oscillator $V=r^4$. It is demonstrated that introducing a dimensionless {\it WKB correction} $γ$ into the r.h.s. of the proposed B-S type quantization condition allows us to reproduce the exact energies with $γ$ being very small for positive degrees $m \geq 0$ and sufficiently small for non-positive ones $m < 0$ for all $n_r, \ell$ studied.

Radial power-like potentials: from the Bohr-Sommerfeld ℓ≠0\ell \neq 0ℓ=0 state energies to the exact ones
Two new Bohr-Sommerfeld (B-S) type quantization conditions for ddd-dimensional radial potentials are proposed for non-singular and singular potentials, respectively. The power-like potentials \hbox{V=sign⁡(m) rmV=\operatorname{sign}(m)\,r^mV=sign(m)rm} for m=−3/2,−1,−1/2,1,3,4,6m=-3/2,-1,-1/2, 1,3,4,6m=−3/2,−1,−1/2,1,3,4,6 and V=log⁡rV=\log rV=logr (that corresponds to m=0m=0m=0) are studied in detail for radial quantum numbers nr∈[0,100]n_r \in [0,100]nr∈[0,100] and for angular momenta ℓ=1,2,3,4,5\ell=1,2,3,4,5ℓ=1,2,3,4,5 in dimensions d=2,3d=2,3d=2,3. It is shown that for large nrn_rnr the B-S energies EBSE_{BS}EBS always tend to the exact ones. For m=2m=2m=2 (the radial harmonic oscillator) and m=−1m=-1m=−1 (the ddd-dimensional analogue of the 3D3D3D Coulomb potential) the B-S spectrum coincides with the exact one for the first and second quantization conditions, respectively. In general, up to a small parametric shift of the radial quantum number, the analytic formulas for the energy spectrum can be written for arbitrary power-like potential.
