Abstract

Two new Bohr-Sommerfeld (B-S) type quantization conditions for $d$-dimensional radial potentials are proposed for non-singular and singular potentials, respectively. The power-like potentials \hbox{$V=\operatorname{sign}(m)\,r^m$} for $m=-3/2,-1,-1/2, 1,3,4,6$ and $V=\log r$ (that corresponds to $m=0$) are studied in detail for radial quantum numbers $n_r \in [0,100]$ and for angular momenta $\ell=1,2,3,4,5$ in dimensions $d=2,3$. It is shown that for large $n_r$ the B-S energies $E_{BS}$ always tend to the exact ones. For $m=2$ (the radial harmonic oscillator) and $m=-1$ (the $d$-dimensional analogue of the $3D$ Coulomb potential) the B-S spectrum coincides with the exact one for the first and second quantization conditions, respectively. In general, up to a small parametric shift of the radial quantum number, the analytic formulas for the energy spectrum can be written for arbitrary power-like potential. A comparison of $E_{BS}$ with the energies $E^{(L)}_{BS}$, obtained for the radial potentials modified by the Langer correction for $d=3$, are in good agreement in general: in detail, it was checked for the quartic oscillator $V=r^4$. It is demonstrated that introducing a dimensionless {\it WKB correction} $γ$ into the r.h.s. of the proposed B-S type quantization condition allows us to reproduce the exact energies with $γ$ being very small for positive degrees $m \geq 0$ and sufficiently small for non-positive ones $m < 0$ for all $n_r, \ell$ studied.

AI Summary

The paper studies semiclassical estimates of bound-state energies for $d$-dimensional radial power-law potentials with nonzero angular momentum. It extends an earlier $S$-state prescription using the effective-dimension replacement $d\to d+2\ell$, keeping the centrifugal term out of the action integral. For $V=r^m$, $m>0$, the proposed rule is $\int\sqrt{E-V(r)}\,dr=\pi[n_r+(d+2\ell)/4]$ in units $\hbar=2\mu=1$. For attractive singular powers, the shift is replaced by $(d+2\ell-1)/2$. These choices reproduce the harmonic-oscillator and Coulomb spectra, respectively. Evaluating the action gives explicit beta-function expressions for power-law energy estimates and a logarithmic expression for $V=\log r$. Accuracy is assessed against Lagrange-mesh calculations, principally for $d=2,3$, $\ell=1,\ldots,5$, and radial excitations up to $n_r=100$. For the tested positive powers $m=1,3,4,6$, errors decrease with excitation. A correction $\gamma$, defined from the numerical energies, satisfies $|\gamma_+|<1/2$ in these cases and is reported to decay as $1/n_r$. Two-parameter rational fits for the quartic potential reproduce energies to approximately four significant digits. A quartic comparison finds Langer-corrected quantization more accurate for the tested nonzero angular momenta. The correction is not derived analytically: obtaining exact energies requires numerical input or fitted corrections. The proposed general bound $|\gamma_\pm|\leq1/2$ remains conjectural; logarithmic-potential examples exceed it, and the paper explicitly excludes the tested Coulomb-plus-linear potential from the conjecture.

Error found: The abstract's claimed detailed numerical coverage of the −r^−1/2 and −r^−3/2 potentials is unsupported by the presented results, which give only their three-dimensional S-wave ground states. The concluding conjecture |γ±| ≤ 1/2 is contradicted by the paper's logarithmic-potential results, including γ+ ≈ 0.834 for d = 3, ℓ = 5, n_r = 0. The square-well example omits a constant term in its Bessel-zero energy asymptotics and establishes only relative agreement, while the absolute energy discrepancy grows linearly with n_r. The final Appendix table prints incorrect logarithmic Bohr–Sommerfeld energies at d = 3, ℓ = 5, n_r = 5 and 10.

Power-like potentials: From the Bohr—Sommerfeld energies to exact ones

J. C. del Valle, Alexander V. Turbiner

For one-dimensional power-like potentials [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], the Bohr–Sommerfeld energies (BSE) extracted explicitly from the Bohr–Sommerfeld quantization condition are compared with the exact energies. It is shown that for the ground state as well as for all positive parity states the BSE are always above the exact ones as opposed to the negative parity states where the BSE remain above the exact ones for [Formula: see text] but below them for [Formula: see text]. The ground state BSE as function of [Formula: see text] are of the same order of magnitude as the exact energies for linear [Formula: see text], quartic [Formula: see text] and sextic [Formula: see text] oscillators but their relative deviation grows with [Formula: see text], reaching the value 4 at [Formula: see text]. For physically important cases [Formula: see text], for the 100th excited state BSE coincide with exact ones in 5–6 figures. It is demonstrated that by modifying the right-hand side of the Bohr–Sommerfeld quantization condition by introducing the so-called WKB correction [Formula: see text] (coming from the sum of higher-order WKB terms taken at the exact energies or from the accurate boundary condition at turning points) to the so-called exact WKB condition one can reproduce the exact energies. It is shown that the WKB correction is a small, bounded function [Formula: see text] for all [Formula: see text]. It grows slowly with increasing [Formula: see text] for fixed quantum number [Formula: see text], while it decays with quantum number growth at fixed [Formula: see text]. It is the first time when for quartic and sextic oscillators the WKB correction and energy spectra (and eigenfunctions) are found in explicit analytic form with a relative accuracy of [Formula: see text] (and [Formula: see text]).

Extensions of the Bohr–Sommerfeld formula to double-well potentials

L. V. Chebotarev

Extensions of the Bohr–Sommerfeld quantization formula to smooth double wells are established which preserve the formula’s generality and simplicity as well as its accuracy and the ease of use. Moreover, the proposed quantization equations for double wells, while being free from the limitations of the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin approximation which is restricted to deep energy levels alone, are equally well suited for determining higher energy levels lying in the vicinity of the barrier’s top as well as above the latter, and they have the correct connection to the conventional Bohr–Sommerfeld formula as the particle’s energy becomes large enough. As a particular application, a simple quantization equation for the pure quartic oscillator is derived which yields correct energy eigenvalues for all eigenstates of the oscillator including the ground one, with relative errors being all less than 1%. Conditions for the validity of the extended quantization equations are discussed and their numerical verification is made.

Generalized Bohr-Sommerfeld rule for quartic oscillators

S. B. Yuste

The generalized Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition up to the ninth-order approximation is given explicitly, in terms of complete elliptic integrals, for two kinds of quartic oscillators V(z)=${\mathit{v}}_{2}$${\mathit{z}}^{2}$+${\mathit{v}}_{4}$${\mathit{z}}^{4}$: (i) for the quartic double barrier, where ${\mathit{v}}_{2}$>0 and ${\mathit{v}}_{4}$0, and the energy is below the potential maximum; and (ii) for the quartic double well, where ${\mathit{v}}_{2}$0 and ${\mathit{v}}_{4}$>0. Resonance energies for some quartic double barriers and energy levels for some quartic double wells were evaluated by solving the quantization condition numerically. In some cases the results are very good.

qanalogs of the radial Schrödinger equation inNspace dimensions

É. Papp

Transparent closed forms of the radial ${\mathrm{SO}}_{\mathit{q}}$(N) Schr\"odinger equation acting on the noncommutative quantum Euclidean space are written both for l=0 and l\ensuremath{\ne}0. Starting from the s-wave equation leads to the derivation of an alternative q analog of the radial Schr\"odinger equation in N space dimensions exhibiting a modified symmetry, now in terms of wave functions depending on the radial coordinate only. The harmonic oscillator and the Coulomb system are treated as concrete examples. These results open the way to the derivation of q-deformed (1/N)-energy formulas for arbitrary spherically symmetrical potentials. Comparisons with exact ${\mathrm{SO}}_{\mathit{q}}$(N) results, as well as further interpretations, have also been made.

Exercises in exact quantization | Exercices de quantification exacte

André Voros

The formalism of exact 1D quantization is reviewed in detail and applied to the spectral study of three concrete Schrödinger Hamiltonians $[-{\rm d}^2/{\rm d} q^2 + V(q)]^\pm$ on the half-line $\{q>0\}$, with a Dirichlet ($-$) or Neumann ($+$) condition at $q=0$. Emphasis is put on the analytical investigation of the spectral determinants and spectral zeta functions with respect to singular perturbation parameters. We first discuss the homogeneous potential $V(q)=q^N$ as $N \to +\infty$ vs its (solvable) $N=\infty$ limit (an infinite square well): useful distinctions are established between regular and singular behaviours of spectral quantities; various identities among the square-well spectral functions are unraveled as limits of finite-$N$ properties. The second model is the quartic anharmonic oscillator: its zero-energy spectral determinants $\det( -{\rm d}^2/{\rm d} q^2 + q^4 + v q^2)^\pm$ are explicitly analyzed in detail, revealing many special values, algebraic identities between Taylor coefficients, and functional equations of a quartic type coupled to asymptotic $v \to +\infty$ properties of Airy type. The third study addresses the potentials $V(q)=q^N+v q^{N/2-1}$ of even degree: their zero-energy spectral determinants prove computable in closed form, and the generalized eigenvalue problems with $v$ as spectral variable admit exact quantization formulae which are perfect extensions of the harmonic oscillator case (corresponding to $N=2$); these results probably reflect the presence of supersymmetric potentials in the family above.

Naïve Bohr-type quantization for power-law potentials

Jacob Katriel

The naïve Bohr quantization condition mvr=nℏ is applied to arbitrary spherically symmetric power-law potentials. The dependence of the energy eigenvalues on the principal quantum number n agrees with fully quantum mechanical results either exactly (for the hydrogen atom, the harmonic oscillator, and the infinite square well) or asymptotically (the linear potential). This naïve treatment can be used in precalculus, high-school, or “quantum theory for poets” expositions.

Radial power-like potentials: from the Bohr-Sommerfeld ℓ≠0\ell \neq 0ℓ=0 state energies to the exact ones
Two new Bohr-Sommerfeld (B-S) type quantization conditions for ddd-dimensional radial potentials are proposed for non-singular and singular potentials, respectively.
