Abstract

M\"obius topological insulators have dispersive edge bands with M\"obius twists in momentum space, which are protected by the combination of chiral and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-projective translational symmetries. In this work, we reveal a unique type of M\"obius topological insulator, whose edge bands can twist around the quasienergy $\ensuremath{\pi}$ of a periodically driven system and are thus of Floquet origin. By applying time-periodic quenches to an experimentally realized M\"obius insulator model, we obtain interconnected M\"obius edge bands around zero and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ quasienergies, which can coexist with a gapped or gapless bulk. These M\"obius bands are topologically characterized by a pair of generalized winding numbers, which are integer-quantized as a result of an emergent chiral symmetry at a high-symmetry point in momentum space. Numerical investigations of the quasienergy and entanglement spectra provide consistent evidence for the presence of such M\"obius topological phases. A protocol based on the adiabatic switching of edge-band populations is further introduced to dynamically characterize the topology of Floquet M\"obius edge bands. Our findings thus extend the scope of M\"obius topological phases to nonequilibrium settings and unveil a unique class of M\"obius-twisted topological edge states without static counterparts.

Gapless Floquet topology

Gabriel Cardoso, Hsiu-Chung Yeh, Leonid Korneev +2 more

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in insulators and superconductors are known for their robust edge modes, linked to bulk invariants through the bulk-boundary correspondence. While this principle traditionally applies to gapped phases, recent advances have extended it to gapless systems, where topological edge-states persist even in the absence of a bulk gap. We extend this framework to periodically driven chains with chiral symmetry, revealing the existence of topological edge zero and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes despite the lack of bulk gaps in the quasienergy spectrum. By examining the half-period decomposition of chiral evolutions, we construct topological invariants that circumvent the need to define the Floquet Hamiltonian, making them more suitable for generalization to the gapless regime. We provide explicit examples, including generalizations of the Kitaev chain and related spin models, where localized $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes emerge even when the bulk is gapless at the same quasienergy as the edge modes. We numerically study the effect of interactions, which give a finite lifetime to the edge modes in the thermodynamic limit with the decay rate consistent with Fermi's golden rule.

Floquet topological phases with large winding number

Kaiye Shi, Xiang Zhang, Wei Zhang

Recently, anomalous Floquet topological phases without static counterparts have been observed in different systems, where periodically driven models are realized to support a winding number of 1 and a pair of edge modes in each quasienergy gap. Here, we focus on cold atomic gases in optical lattices and propose a driving scheme that breaks rotation symmetry but maintains inversion symmetry of the instantaneous Hamiltonian, and discover a type of anomalous Floquet topological phase with a winding number larger than 1. By analyzing the condition of band touching under the constraint of symmetries, we map out the phase diagram exactly by varying the driving parameters and discuss the quasienergy spectra of typical topological phases, which can present multiple pairs of edge modes within a single gap. Finally, we suggest to characterize the topology of such phases by detecting the band inversion surfaces via quench dynamics.

Floquet topological superconductors with many Majorana edge modes: topological invariants, entanglement spectrum and bulk-edge correspondence

Hailing Wu, Shenlin Wu, Longwen Zhou

Abstract One-dimensional (1D) Floquet topological superconductors possess two types of degenerate Majorana edge modes at zero andπquasienergies, leaving more room for the design of boundary time crystals and quantum computing schemes than their static counterparts. In this work, we discover Floquet superconducting phases with large topological invariants and arbitrarily many Majorana edge modes in periodically driven Kitaev chains (KCs). Topological winding numbers defined for the Floquet operator and Floquet entanglement Hamiltonian are found to generate consistent predictions about the phase diagram, bulk-edge correspondence and numbers of zero andπMajorana edge modes of the system under different driving protocols. The bipartite entanglement entropy further shows non-analytic behaviors around the topological transition point between different Floquet superconducting phases. These general features are demonstrated by investigating the KC with periodically kicked pairing or hopping amplitudes. Our discovery reveals the rich topological phases and many Majorana edge modes that could be brought about by periodic driving fields in 1D superconducting systems. It further introduces a unified description for a class of Floquet topological superconductors from their quasienergy bands and entanglement properties.

Topological phases in the periodically kicked Chern insulators

Fei Yang, Zheng Wei, TianMeng Li +1 more

Novel topological properties that arose in the periodically driven system are unique, in which there are two kinds of quasienergy gaps, the zero quasienergy gap and the $π$ quasienergy gap. The corresponding edge modes would traverse either the zero quasienergy gap or the $π$ quasienergy gap, or traverse both two quasienergy gaps. And the characterization of these two kinds of edge modes might not be the same. However, in this paper, we find that both the zero edge modes and the $π$ edge modes in the Floquet Chern insulators can be characterized by the same topological invariant, where the corresponding Dirac mass term is periodically kicked. Particularly, we take the periodically kicked Qi-Wu-Zhang model as an illustrative example. In this model, the topology is characterized by the Floquet Chern number $C_F$, and there are six different topological phases in total, denoted as $C_F=\{-1_0,-2,-1_π,1_π,2,1_0\}$. Furthermore, we find that the Floquet operator associated with the periodically kicked Qi-Wu-Zhang model reduces to a Dirac Hamiltonian in the low-energy limit. Then, the phase diagram is uncovered by examining the topology of this Dirac Hamiltonian. Additionally, we explore the orders of topological phase transitions in the context of Floquet stationary states by analyzing the von Neumann entropy of these states. Our work provides further insights into the topological phases in periodically driven systems.

Non-equilibrium aspects of topological Floquet quantum systems

Lorenzo Privitera

The manifestations of topology are ubiquitous in condensed matter physics. One of the most striking examples is the integer quantum Hall effect, which served as a theoretical basis for developing many classes of new materials in the last years such as topological insulators. It has been realized that topology can manifest itself also in time-dependent quantum systems. The question that we try to address in this thesis is how much of these topological structures can be harnessed in the realistic dynamics of a periodically driven closed quantum system. We investigate two kinds of topological periodically driven systems Thouless pumping and Floquet Chern insulators. Our analysis shows that the nonequilibrium occupations of the eigenvalues of the Floquet Hamiltonian, the so called quasienergies, play a crucial role. In the case of Thouless pumping we analysed the pumped charge averaged over many cycles and discovered that the corrections to perfect quantization of the pumped charge are actually quadratic in the frequency of the driving for a suddenly switched-on driving. In the case of Floquet Chern insulators, we studied fermions on the honeycomb lattice subjected to a circularly polarised field. We found that while the quasienergy bulk states can be populated in a controlled way, edge states get unavoidable excitations due to exponentially small gaps preventing adiabaticity. These defects reflect in nonequilibrium currents flowing at the edges, that can be manipulated by tailoring the parameters of the periodic driving. Nevertheless, the nonequilibrium state undergoes a generalized form of topological transition, thanks to the controlled population of bulk states. We describe it with a generalized version of the Chern marker of Bianco and Resta

Scattering theory of Floquet topological insulators

Ion Cosma Fulga, Mykola Maksymenko

Similar to static systems, periodically driven systems can host a variety of topologically non-trivial phases. Unlike the case of static Hamiltonians, the topological indices of bulk Floquet bands may fail to describe the presence and robustness of edge states, prompting the search for new invariants. We develop a unified description of topological phases and their invariants in driven systems, by using scattering theory. We show that scattering matrix invariants correctly describe the topological phase, even when all bulk Floquet bands are trivial. Additionally, we use scattering theory to introduce and analyze new periodically driven phases, such as weak topological Floquet insulators, for which invariants were previously unknown. We highlight some of their similarities with static systems, including robustness to disorder, as well as some of the features unique to driven systems, showing that the weak phase may be destroyed by breaking translational symmetry not in space, but in time.
