Abstract

Novel topological properties that arose in the periodically driven system are unique, in which there are two kinds of quasienergy gaps, the zero quasienergy gap and the $π$ quasienergy gap. The corresponding edge modes would traverse either the zero quasienergy gap or the $π$ quasienergy gap, or traverse both two quasienergy gaps. And the characterization of these two kinds of edge modes might not be the same. However, in this paper, we find that both the zero edge modes and the $π$ edge modes in the Floquet Chern insulators can be characterized by the same topological invariant, where the corresponding Dirac mass term is periodically kicked. Particularly, we take the periodically kicked Qi-Wu-Zhang model as an illustrative example. In this model, the topology is characterized by the Floquet Chern number $C_F$, and there are six different topological phases in total, denoted as $C_F=\{-1_0,-2,-1_π,1_π,2,1_0\}$. Furthermore, we find that the Floquet operator associated with the periodically kicked Qi-Wu-Zhang model reduces to a Dirac Hamiltonian in the low-energy limit. Then, the phase diagram is uncovered by examining the topology of this Dirac Hamiltonian. Additionally, we explore the orders of topological phase transitions in the context of Floquet stationary states by analyzing the von Neumann entropy of these states. Our work provides further insights into the topological phases in periodically driven systems.

Effects of periodically kicked Dirac mass term in the Chern insulators

Fei Yang, Zheng Wei, Tian-Meng Li +1 more

Floquet engineering offers a unique approach to generate nonequilibrium topological phases in which the unbounded nature of a quasienergy band allows two kinds of topological edge modes, one of them traversing the 0 gap and another one traversing the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ gap. Characterizing of these two modes is the main topic of Floquet topological insulators, where they are usually characterized by different topological invariants. However, in this paper, for a specific protocol of Floquet engineering where the Dirac mass term of the Chern insulator is periodically kicked, its topological phases are characterized with the Floquet Chern number ${C}_{F}$. Specifically, in our illustrative example, the periodically kicked Qi-Wu-Zhang model, there are six different topological phases in total, denoted as ${C}_{F}={\ensuremath{-}{1}_{0},\ensuremath{-}2,\ensuremath{-}{1}_{\ensuremath{\pi}},{1}_{\ensuremath{\pi}},2,{1}_{0}}$. Topological phases with larger topological number are observed, i.e., ${C}_{F}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2$, where the chiral edge modes traversing the 0 gap and those traversing $\ensuremath{\pi}$ gap have the opposite chirality. The mechanism of its topology is revealed by studying the corresponding low-energy effective Dirac Hamiltonian, and the phase boundaries between different topological phases are explicitly found. Additionally, we investigate the orders of phase transitions between different topological phases by studying the von Neumann entropy of the Floquet steady state (FSS), where the FSS corresponds to a stationary state of the Floquet system that is coupled to a Markovian environment. The hallmark of a periodically kicked Dirac mass term is uncovered in this paper, which may inspire further explorations of the physical effects of periodically kicked Dirac mass terms in other systems.

Floquet topological superconductors with many Majorana edge modes: topological invariants, entanglement spectrum and bulk-edge correspondence

Hailing Wu, Shenlin Wu, Longwen Zhou

Abstract One-dimensional (1D) Floquet topological superconductors possess two types of degenerate Majorana edge modes at zero andπquasienergies, leaving more room for the design of boundary time crystals and quantum computing schemes than their static counterparts. In this work, we discover Floquet superconducting phases with large topological invariants and arbitrarily many Majorana edge modes in periodically driven Kitaev chains (KCs). Topological winding numbers defined for the Floquet operator and Floquet entanglement Hamiltonian are found to generate consistent predictions about the phase diagram, bulk-edge correspondence and numbers of zero andπMajorana edge modes of the system under different driving protocols. The bipartite entanglement entropy further shows non-analytic behaviors around the topological transition point between different Floquet superconducting phases. These general features are demonstrated by investigating the KC with periodically kicked pairing or hopping amplitudes. Our discovery reveals the rich topological phases and many Majorana edge modes that could be brought about by periodic driving fields in 1D superconducting systems. It further introduces a unified description for a class of Floquet topological superconductors from their quasienergy bands and entanglement properties.

Gapless Floquet topology

Gabriel Cardoso, Hsiu-Chung Yeh, Leonid Korneev +2 more

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in insulators and superconductors are known for their robust edge modes, linked to bulk invariants through the bulk-boundary correspondence. While this principle traditionally applies to gapped phases, recent advances have extended it to gapless systems, where topological edge-states persist even in the absence of a bulk gap. We extend this framework to periodically driven chains with chiral symmetry, revealing the existence of topological edge zero and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes despite the lack of bulk gaps in the quasienergy spectrum. By examining the half-period decomposition of chiral evolutions, we construct topological invariants that circumvent the need to define the Floquet Hamiltonian, making them more suitable for generalization to the gapless regime. We provide explicit examples, including generalizations of the Kitaev chain and related spin models, where localized $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes emerge even when the bulk is gapless at the same quasienergy as the edge modes. We numerically study the effect of interactions, which give a finite lifetime to the edge modes in the thermodynamic limit with the decay rate consistent with Fermi's golden rule.

Disordered Chern insulator with a two-step Floquet drive

Sthitadhi Roy, G. J. Sreejith

We explore the physics of a Chern insulator subjected to a two-step Floquet drive. We analytically obtain the phase diagram and show that the system can exhibit different topological phases characterized by the presence and chirality of edge modes in the two bulk gaps of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, around 0 and $\ensuremath{\pi}$. We find that the phase of the system depends on the mean but not on the amplitude of the drive. The bulk topological invariants characterizing the phases can be extracted by mapping the unitary evolution within a time period to an energetically trivial but topologically nontrivial time evolution. An extensive numerical study of the bulk topological invariants in the presence of quenched disorder reveals transitions induced by strong disorder (i) from the different topological to trivial insulator phases and (ii) from a trivial to a topological Anderson insulator phase at intermediate disorder strengths. Careful analysis of level statistics of the quasienergy spectrum indicates a ``levitation-annihilation'' mechanism near these transitions.

Realization of anomalous Floquet topological phases with ultracold atoms

Karen Wintersperger, Christoph Braun, F. Nur Ünal +5 more

Coherent control via periodic modulation, also known as Floquet engineering, has emerged as a powerful experimental method for the realization of novel quantum systems with exotic properties. In particular, it has been employed to study topological phenomena in a variety of different platforms. In driven systems, the topological properties of the quasienergy bands can often be determined by standard topological invariants, such as Chern numbers, which are commonly used in static systems. However, due to the periodic nature of the quasienergy spectrum, this topological description is incomplete and new invariants are required to fully capture the topological properties. Most prominently, there exist two-dimensional anomalous Floquet systems that exhibit robust chiral edge modes, despite all Chern numbers are equal to zero. Here, we realize such a system with bosonic atoms in a periodically-driven hexagonal lattice and infer the complete set of topological invariants from energy gap measurements and local Hall deflections.

Non-equilibrium aspects of topological Floquet quantum systems

Lorenzo Privitera

The manifestations of topology are ubiquitous in condensed matter physics. One of the most striking examples is the integer quantum Hall effect, which served as a theoretical basis for developing many classes of new materials in the last years such as topological insulators. It has been realized that topology can manifest itself also in time-dependent quantum systems. The question that we try to address in this thesis is how much of these topological structures can be harnessed in the realistic dynamics of a periodically driven closed quantum system. We investigate two kinds of topological periodically driven systems Thouless pumping and Floquet Chern insulators. Our analysis shows that the nonequilibrium occupations of the eigenvalues of the Floquet Hamiltonian, the so called quasienergies, play a crucial role. In the case of Thouless pumping we analysed the pumped charge averaged over many cycles and discovered that the corrections to perfect quantization of the pumped charge are actually quadratic in the frequency of the driving for a suddenly switched-on driving. In the case of Floquet Chern insulators, we studied fermions on the honeycomb lattice subjected to a circularly polarised field. We found that while the quasienergy bulk states can be populated in a controlled way, edge states get unavoidable excitations due to exponentially small gaps preventing adiabaticity. These defects reflect in nonequilibrium currents flowing at the edges, that can be manipulated by tailoring the parameters of the periodic driving. Nevertheless, the nonequilibrium state undergoes a generalized form of topological transition, thanks to the controlled population of bulk states. We describe it with a generalized version of the Chern marker of Bianco and Resta
