Abstract

We investigate the multiphoton quantum dynamics of a leaking single-mode quantized cavity field coupled with a resonantly driven two-level system possessing permanent dipoles. The frequencies of the interacting subsystems being considered are very different, e.g., the microwave range for the cavity and the optical domain for the frequency of the two-level emitter, respectively. In this way, the emitter couples to the resonator mode only via its diagonal dipole moments. Furthermore, the generalized Rabi frequency resulting from the external coherent driving of the two-level subsystem is also assumed to be different from the resonator's frequency or its multiples. As a consequence, this highly dispersive interaction regime is responsible for the cavity multiphoton quantum dynamics and photon conversion from the optical to microwave range, respectively.

Quantum Photon Conversion via Coherently Driven Permanent Dipole Systems

Sergiu Carlig, Alexandra Mîrzac, P. Bardetski +1 more

The photon quantum dynamics in a damped single-mode quantized cavity field coupled with a resonantly driven two-level system possessing nonzero permanent dipoles is investigated here. The interacting subsystems are very different frequencies (microwave and optical domains) and, in this highly dispersive regime, the emitter couples to the resonator mode via its diagonal dipole moments only. As a result, this interaction regime is responsible for the cavity multiphoton quantum dynamics and photon conversion from optical to terahertz ranges, for instance. Furthermore, enhanced terahertz photon correlations occur as well.

Coherent radiation by two-level quantum systems with permanent dipole moments under multiphoton resonant laser excitation

H. K. Avetissian, B. R. Avchyan, G. F. Mkrtchian

The theory of coherent radiation emission in two-level quantum systems with permanent dipole moments at the multiphoton resonant excitation by moderately strong laser fields is presented. A simple analytic formula for the expectation value of a dipole moment operator is obtained. The spectrum corresponding to harmonic generation and low-frequency radiation on the generalized Rabi frequency is investigated both analytically and numerically. The effect of dynamic Stark shift on a dipole spectrum under direct multiphoton resonant excitation is considered.

Dynamics of a quantum oscillator coupled with a three-level Λ-type emitter

Alexandra Mîrzac, Mihai Macovei

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a quantum oscillator coupled with the most upper state of a three-level Λ-type system. The two transitions of the three-level emitter, possessing orthogonal dipole moments, are coherently pumped with a single or two electromagnetic field sources, respectively. We have found ranges for flexible lasing or cooling phenomena referring to the quantum oscillator’s degrees of freedom. This is due to asymmetrical decay rates and quantum interference effects leading to population transfer among the relevant dressed states of the emitter’s subsystem with which the quantum oscillator is coupled. As an appropriate system can be considered a nanomechanical resonator coupled with the most excited state of the three-level emitter fixed on it. Alternatively, if the upper state of the Λ-type system possesses a permanent dipole then it can couple with a cavity electromagnetic field mode which can be in the terahertz domain, for instance. In the latter case, we demonstrate an effective electromagnetic field source of terahertz photons.

Quantum Rabi oscillations of a qubit strongly coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide

Ya. S. Greenberg, A. A. Shtygashev, O. A. Chuikin +2 more

We theoretically investigate quantum Rabi oscillations in a system consisting of a two-level atom (qubit) strongly coupled to a one-dimensional open waveguide. In contrast to conventional cavity quantum electrodynamics, the qubit interacts with a continuum of propagating modes, which gives rise to fundamentally different dynamical behavior. Within the rotating-wave approximation, we express the multimode Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian in terms of collective bosonic operators and show that the system possesses two integrals of motion, enabling an exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in the single-excitation subspace. We show that for a strongly interacting qubit-photon system, the dynamics are captured by a reduced two-level model. In this framework, each level is defined as the product of the atomic excited state and a specific field mode, which takes the form of a multiphoton Fock-like state. In this picture, the Rabi oscillations represent a collective phenomenon corresponding to oscillations between multiphoton states differing by a single photon. We then extend our analysis to multiphoton processes in which the initial field is a coherent state with a continuous spectrum. In this case, the Rabi frequency is shown to be sensitive to the spectral profile of the function that generates the coherent state.

Intense-field-stimulated multiphoton transitions in a two-level system

P. Milman, Nicim Zagury

We study the interaction of an intense classical field with a two-level system coupled to a bosonic quantized field. We focus on the regime where the classical field and the two-level system characteristic frequencies are the same, while the quantized mode is set off resonance with both. We show that a parameter governing the dynamics of the system is the ratio between the classical field's intensity and the quantized mode detuning. Depending on this parameter, multiple excitations can be created in the quantized mode in a single cycle of the two-level system. Examples of physical setups allowing for the application of the presented ideas are superconducting circuits in strip-line resonators, laser cooled trapped ions, and neutral atoms coupled to the quantized field of a cavity. We focus on the latter in order to show that, with realistic experimental parameters, it is possible to generate up to four photons in a single Rabi cycle.

Non-classical photon statistics in frequency-modulated double quantum dot cavity systems

T. Mihaescu, A. Isar, M. A. Macovei

The quantum dynamics of a double quantum dot two-level system, coupled to a leaking microwave resonator mode, is theoretically investigated. The double quantum dot is driven by applying a continuous field giving rise to time-dependent modulations of its energy separation between the ground levels of each dot, forming the qubit. Therefore, the cavity resonances occur when the difference between the resonator and the qubit frequencies equals the multiple of the modulation frequency, respectively. In the strong Coulomb interaction limit and the weak couplings of the combined system, i.e. the qubit and the single-mode cavity, to corresponding electronic, phononic or photonic reservoirs, we have demonstrated that the output cavity electromagnetic field is formed of a single-photon flux obeying the sub-Poissonian quantum photon statistics. This was proved via Fano's factor behaviour or by comparing the resonator's second- and third-order photon correlation functions, respectively. The phonon, the cavity mode dephasing or the environmental temperatures influence on the quantum properties of the photons are also discussed.
