Intense-field-stimulated multiphoton transitions in a two-level system

Abstract

We study the interaction of an intense classical field with a two-level system coupled to a bosonic quantized field. We focus on the regime where the classical field and the two-level system characteristic frequencies are the same, while the quantized mode is set off resonance with both. We show that a parameter governing the dynamics of the system is the ratio between the classical field's intensity and the quantized mode detuning. Depending on this parameter, multiple excitations can be created in the quantized mode in a single cycle of the two-level system. Examples of physical setups allowing for the application of the presented ideas are superconducting circuits in strip-line resonators, laser cooled trapped ions, and neutral atoms coupled to the quantized field of a cavity. We focus on the latter in order to show that, with realistic experimental parameters, it is possible to generate up to four photons in a single Rabi cycle.

Microwave multiphoton conversion via coherently driven permanent dipole systems

Alexandra Mîrzac, Sergiu Carlig, Mihai Macovei

We investigate the multiphoton quantum dynamics of a leaking single-mode quantized cavity field coupled with a resonantly driven two-level system possessing permanent dipoles. The frequencies of the interacting subsystems being considered are very different, e.g., the microwave range for the cavity and the optical domain for the frequency of the two-level emitter, respectively. In this way, the emitter couples to the resonator mode only via its diagonal dipole moments. Furthermore, the generalized Rabi frequency resulting from the external coherent driving of the two-level subsystem is also assumed to be different from the resonator's frequency or its multiples. As a consequence, this highly dispersive interaction regime is responsible for the cavity multiphoton quantum dynamics and photon conversion from the optical to microwave range, respectively.

Stimulated Raman amplification spectra in a four-level atomic system interacting with a strong bichromatic field

Constantine Mavroyannis

We have considered the stimulated Raman spectra arising from interaction of a four-level atom with a strong bichromatic field and a weak signal field simultaneously. The atomic system consists of two upper excited states ‖3〉 and ‖4〉 and two lower states ‖1〉 and ‖2〉, where the metastable state ‖2〉 is depleted through the action of two strong laser fields operating between the states ‖2〉↔‖4〉 and ‖2〉↔‖3〉, respectively. Using a model Hamiltonian, where all the free and interacting fields are quantized, and the Green function method in the limit of high photon densities of both laser fields, we have studied stimulated two-photon processes near the frequencies ±ω≊ω21≊ω41 −ωa≊ω31 −ωb for the ‖1〉→‖2〉 electric dipole forbidden transition describing physical processes, where one photon of the signal field with frequency ω41(ω31) is absorbed while a photon of the laser field with frequency ωa(ωb) is emitted and vice versa; ωij refers to an atomic transition frequency between the states ‖i〉 and ‖j〉. The spectral function for the stimulated two-photon processes consists of a central peak at the frequency ω=ω21, which has a delta function distribution indicating the stability of the mode in question, and three pairs of sidebands, where one pair of sidebands is induced by each laser field, respectively, while the third pair of sidebands is induced by both laser fields simultaneously. The intensities of the sidebands are always negative indicating that strong amplification (stimulated emission) takes place at the corresponding frequencies. The computed resonance and off-resonance spectra are graphically presented and discussed. When a classical description for both laser fields is used, the spectral function is found to describe one pair of sidebands, which is induced by both laser fields simultaneously; this classical result is graphically presented and compared with those obtained when the fields are quantized. It is shown that the results obtained when the fields are quantized and in the limit of high photon densities describe the classical as well as the quantum nature of the photon fields which is lost in the classical picture. The effect of the quantum nature or, equivalently, the boson character of the photon is to split the ‘‘classical’’ spectrum described by one pair of sidebands into three pairs, whose sum of relative intensities is equal to that of the original pair derived classically.

Multiphoton processes between one atom and a multimode field

Lü-Yun Cheng, Zi‐Liang Lan, Sai-Yun Ye +1 more

Abstract In this paper, we present a theoretical investigation of multiphoton processes between a single atom and a multimode optical or microwave field. At first, we examine two-photon excitation, which involves the simultaneous excitation of two photons in different cavity modes by a single atom. We demonstrate that when the transition frequency of an atom is equal to the sum of the frequencies of two cavity modes, there exists a resonant coupling between the atom and the two-mode cavity field, which leads to the simultaneous excitation of the two cavity photons with the atom initially in its excited state. Moreover, we found that this coupling is coherent and reversible, allowing the atom initially in the ground state to simultaneously absorb all the photons from the cavities and transit to its excited state. Finally, we also show that this coherent interaction, in principle, can be extended to describe multiphoton processes between a single atom and a multimode cavity field, such as a three-mode cavity. The parameters used in the numerical simulation are based on the experimentally demonstrated values in circuit quantum electrodynamics systems.

N-level Atom Interacting with Single-mode Radiation Field: An Exactly Solvable Model with Multiphoton Transitions and Intensity-dependent Coupling

Vladimír Bužek

We study the dynamics of an N-level atom coupled in a lossless cavity to a single-mode near-resonant quantized field. The atomic levels are coupled by the multiphoton transitions and the coupling constants between the field and the atomic levels are supposed to be intensity dependent. We find the exact solution for the state vector describing the dynamics of the atom-plus-field system. As an illustration we use the model for studying (i) the time evolution of the atomic occupation probability with the initially coherent field and (ii) the light squeezing, when the cavity field is initially in the vacuum state and the atom is prepared in the atomic ‘coherent state’ (a superposition of atomic states).

Multiphoton interaction of a qutrit with single-mode quantized field in the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes

Hamlet K. Avetissian, Ara K. Avetissian, Garnik F. Mkrtchian +1 more

We consider the multiphoton dynamics of a quantum system composed of a three-state atom (a qutrit) and a single-mode photonic field in the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes, when the coupling strength is comparable to or larger than the oscillator energy scale. We assume a qutrit to be in a L configuration, where an upper level is coupled to a twofold degenerate lower level. Direct multiphoton resonant transitions revealing generalized Rabi oscillations, collapse, and revivals in atomic excitation probabilities for the ultrastrong couplings are studied. In the deep strong coupling regime, particular emphasis is placed on the ground state of the considered system which strictly exhibits nonclassical properties.

Quantum Dynamics of a Hyper-Raman Coupled Model Interacting with Two Quantized Cavity Fields

Christopher C. Gerry

The quantum dynamics of a hyper-Raman coupled model interacting with two modes of the quantized cavity field is described. The model consists of a four-level atom in a v configuration where transitions between the ground and excited states occur through the absorption (emission) of two photons from one mode and the emission (absorption) of one photon from the other and where two intermediate states are taken to be far off-resonance and are adiabatically removed. This is a multiphoton extension of the Jaynes-Cummings model and is exactly solvable. We study the atomic inversion and investigate the production of non-classical light exhibiting antibunching, violations of the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality, and squeezing.
