Abstract

The theory of coherent radiation emission in two-level quantum systems with permanent dipole moments at the multiphoton resonant excitation by moderately strong laser fields is presented. A simple analytic formula for the expectation value of a dipole moment operator is obtained. The spectrum corresponding to harmonic generation and low-frequency radiation on the generalized Rabi frequency is investigated both analytically and numerically. The effect of dynamic Stark shift on a dipole spectrum under direct multiphoton resonant excitation is considered.

Strong versus Weak Excitation in Frequency Mixing and Harmonic Generation by Two-Level Systems

R. Parzyński, T. Kopyciuk

In the limits of weak and strong excitation, we solve analytically the Riccati-type differential equation for a two-level system in the field of two different lasers and then use these solutions to find easy to handle formulae for the induced electric-dipole moment of the system. We apply these formulae to describe the effects of strong excitation in both the higher harmonics generation and multiphoton frequency mixing, namely the diminishing of the generation of harmonics of a given laser when an additional laser is turned on and the diminishing of the radiation at mixed frequencies with increasing strength of lasers under the condition of multiphoton excitation.

Microwave multiphoton conversion via coherently driven permanent dipole systems

Alexandra Mîrzac, Sergiu Carlig, Mihai Macovei

We investigate the multiphoton quantum dynamics of a leaking single-mode quantized cavity field coupled with a resonantly driven two-level system possessing permanent dipoles. The frequencies of the interacting subsystems being considered are very different, e.g., the microwave range for the cavity and the optical domain for the frequency of the two-level emitter, respectively. In this way, the emitter couples to the resonator mode only via its diagonal dipole moments. Furthermore, the generalized Rabi frequency resulting from the external coherent driving of the two-level subsystem is also assumed to be different from the resonator's frequency or its multiples. As a consequence, this highly dispersive interaction regime is responsible for the cavity multiphoton quantum dynamics and photon conversion from the optical to microwave range, respectively.

Quantum Optical Description of Radiation by a Two-Level System in Strong Laser Fields

Zhao-Yang Peng, Huayu Hu, Zengxiu Zhao +1 more

We develop a quantum optical description of radiation from a two-level system (TLS) in strong laser fields, which provides a clear insight into the final states of the TLS and the harmonics field. It is shown that there are two emission channels: the Rayleigh-like channel and the Raman-like channel, which correspond to the TLS ending up in the ground state and excited state after the emission, respectively. The numerical result shows that the harmonics are mainly produced by the Rayleigh-like channel. In addition, according to the coherence of emission among the emitters, the radiation is divided into coherent parts that result from the semi-classical dipole oscillation and incoherent parts that result from the quantum fluctuations of the dipole moment. In the weak field limits, the Rayleigh-like channel corresponds to the coherent parts, and the Raman-like channel corresponds to the incoherent parts. However, in strong laser fields, both channels contribute to coherent and incoherent radiation, and how much they contribute depends on the final excitation. By manipulating the laser field, we can make the Rayleigh-like channel produce either coherent or incoherent radiation.

Multiphoton resonant excitation of atoms in strong laser fields and implementation of coherent superposition states

H. K. Avetissian, G. F. Mkrtchian

The multiphoton resonant excitation of three-level atoms in a strong laser field is investigated. The creation of various superposition states is shown. For implementation of these effects either the mean dipole moment in the excited states of an atom or, in three-level systems, a transition dipole moment between excited states (with energies close enough to each other) must be nonzero. The time evolution of the system is found using a nonperturbative resonant approach. Our calculations for the hydrogen atom suggest that by the appropriate optical pulses with moderate strong intensities one can achieve various superposition states by multiphoton resonant excitation.

High harmonic generation induced by permanent dipole moments

Óscar G. Calderón, R. Gutiérrez-Castrejón, J.M. Guerra

The interaction between radiation and a two-level molecular system in the presence of permanent dipole moments is analyzed. It is found that the nonzero difference between permanent dipoles induces a polarization that oscillates at frequencies /spl omega/, 2/spl omega/, 3/spl omega/, etc., where /spl omega/ is the frequency of the electromagnetic field resonant with the two-level system. An analysis of the propagation equation of the harmonics shows that even harmonics are amplified while odd harmonics are absorbed.
