Abstract

We use a versatile model to evaluate the multipartite entanglement and the nonclassical light generation in optical parametric oscillators, exploring the differences between doubly and triply resonant cavity configurations. We demonstrate the entanglement of the pump mode with converted fields in both situations, and the fundamental differences of oscillators using parametric down conversion and four wave mixing processes as the intracavity amplification technique. The strong correlations involving the sidebands of the pump and converted fields give the signatures of a rich dynamic of multipartite entanglement.

Exploring six modes of an optical parametric oscillator

Luis F. Muñoz-Martínez, F. A. S. Barbosa, Antônio Sales Coelho +4 more

We measure the complete quantum state for six modes of the electromagnetic field produced by an optical parametric oscillator. The investigation involves the sideband of the intense pump, signal, and idler fields generated by stimulated parametric downconversion inside a triply resonant optical resonator. We develop a theoretical model to successfully interpret the experimental results. The model takes into account the coupling of the field modes to the phonon bath of the nonlinear crystal, clearly showing the roles of different physical effects in shaping the structure of the quantum correlations between the six optical modes.

Entanglement and nonclassicality in four-mode Gaussian states generated via parametric down-conversion and frequency up-conversion

Ievgen I. Arkhipov, Jan Peřina, Ondřej Haderka +2 more

Multipartite entanglement and nonclassicality of four-mode Gaussian states generated in two simultaneous nonlinear processes involving parametric down-conversion and frequency up-conversion are analyzed assuming the vacuum as the initial state. Suitable conditions for the generation of highly entangled states are found. Transfer of the entanglement from the down-converted modes into the up-converted ones is also suggested. The analysis of the whole set of states reveals that sub-shot-noise intensity correlations between the equally-populated down-converted modes, as well as the equally-populated up-converted modes, uniquely identify entangled states. They represent a powerful entanglement identifier also in other cases with arbitrarily populated modes.

Resonant cascaded down-conversion

Christian Weedbrook, Ben Perrett, Karen V. Kheruntsyan +3 more

We analyze an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in which cascaded down-conversion occurs inside a cavity resonant for all modes but the initial pump. Due to the resonant cascade design, the OPO presents two ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$-level oscillation thresholds that are therefore much lower than for a ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(3)}$ OPO. This is promising for reaching the regime of an effective third-order nonlinearity well above both thresholds. Such a ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ cascaded device also has potential applications in frequency conversion to far-infrared regimes. But, most importantly, it can generate novel multipartite quantum correlations in the output radiation, which represent a step beyond squeezed or entangled light. The output can be highly non-Gaussian and therefore not describable by any semiclassical model. In this paper, we derive quantum stochastic equations in the positive-$P$ representation and undertake an analysis of steady-state and dynamical properties of this system.

Generation and signatures of entanglement in cavity quantum electrodynamics

D. Pagel, Holger Fehske

We inspect different quantum optical setups from the viewpoint of entanglement generation and detection. As a first step we consider a planar semiconductor microcavity and optimize the Bell-type correlations and their robustness against dephasing to create strong bipartite entanglement between polariton branches, which subsequently can be transfered to the emitted photons. In a second step, in order to create multipartite entangled light, we place the microcavity in an optical resonator driven by pump pulses with a frequency comb spectrum. For this system we show how phase matching of all comb modes can be achieved and will lead to indistinguishable scattering processes causing entanglement among every mode. Finally we demonstrate the buildup of entanglement in the dissipative dynamics of emitters coupled to a single cavity photon mode driven by an external laser. From a Floquet master equation approach we find that entanglement production predominates during the first few laser oscillation periods.
