Abstract

We determine the frequency of the ultranarrow $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ transition by spectroscopy of an ultracold gas. This transition is referenced to four molecular iodine lines that are observed by Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy of hot iodine vapor. The frequency differences between the Sr and the ${\mathrm{I}}_{2}$ transitions are measured with an uncertainty of $0.5\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$. The absolute frequency of the $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ (${\text{F}}^{\ensuremath{'}}=7/2$) transition is $446\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}648\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}775(30)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$ and limited in accuracy by the iodine reference. This work prepares the use of the Sr $^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ transition for quantum simulation and computation.

S01−P23 magnetic quadrupole transition in neutral strontium

We present a detailed investigation of the ultranarrow magnetic-quadrupole $^{1}\mathrm{S}_{0}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{3}\mathrm{P}_{2}$ transition in neutral strontium and show how it can be made accessible for quantum simulation and quantum computation. By engineering the light shift in a one-dimensional optical lattice, we perform high-resolution spectroscopy and observe the characteristic absorption patterns for a magnetic quadrupole transition. We measure an absolute transition frequency of $446,647,242,704(2)$ kHz in $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$ and an $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$ isotope shift of $+62.91(4)$ MHz. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we use this transition to demonstrate local addressing in an optical lattice with 532 nm spacing with a Rayleigh-criterion resolution of $494(45)$ nm. Our results pave the way for applications of the magnetic quadrupole transition as an optical qubit and for single-site addressing in optical lattices.

By varying the density of an ultracold $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$ sample from ${10}^{9}$ to$>{10}^{12}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, we make the first definitive measurement of the density-related frequency shift and linewidth broadening of the $^{1}S_{0}\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}^{3}P_{1}$ optical clock transition in an alkaline earth system. In addition, we report the most accurate measurement to date of the $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$ $^{1}S_{0}\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}^{3}P_{1}$ optical clock transition frequency. Including a detailed analysis of systematic errors, the frequency is $[434\text{ }\text{ }829\text{ }\text{ }121\text{ }\text{ }312\text{ }\text{ }334\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}20(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}33(\mathrm{syst})]\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Hz}$.

Frequency measurement on the 5s5p P23−5s4d D33 transition of Sr88 atoms using the photon-momentum-transfer technique

We report a frequency measurement on the $5s5p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}P_{2}\ensuremath{-}5s4d\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}D_{3}$ transition of $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$ atoms at $2.9\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. The excitation spectra are obtained by measuring the photon momenta transferred to ultracold atoms. The transition frequency is determined to be 102 550 196 205(9) kHz using an erbium fiber-based optical frequency comb. We numerically investigate possible frequency corrections by taking an acceleration of atoms and attenuation of the excitation light into account. This measurement technique is particularly useful for transitions where laser-induced fluorescence is difficult to observe but the spatial imaging of atoms is possible.

Spectroscopy and frequency measurement of the87Sr clock transition by laser linewidth transfer using an optical frequency comb

Daisuke Akamatsu, Hajime Inaba, Kazumoto Hosaka +5 more

We performed spectroscopic observations of the 698-nm clock transition in 87 Sr confined in an optical lattice using a laser linewidth transfer technique. A narrow-linewidth laser interrogating the clock transition was prepared by transferring the linewidth of a master laser (1064 nm) to that of a slave laser (698 nm) with a high-speed controllable fiber-based frequency comb. The Fourier-limited spectrum was then observed for an 80-ms interrogating pulse. We determined that the absolute frequency of the 5s 2 1 S 0 –5s5p 3 P 0 clock transition in 87 Sr is 429 228 004 229 872.0 (1.6) Hz referenced to the SI second.

Spectroscopy of the S01−P03 Clock Transition of Sr87 in an Optical Lattice

Masao Takamoto, Hidetoshi Katori

We report on the spectroscopy of the $5{s}^{2}\text{ }^{1}S_{0}(F=9/2)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5s5p\text{ }^{3}P_{0}(F=9/2)$ clock transition of $^{87}\mathrm{S}\mathrm{r}$ atoms (natural linewidth of 1 mHz) trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Recoilless transitions with a linewidth of 0.7 kHz as well as the vibrational structure of the lattice potential were observed. By investigating the wavelength dependence of the carrier linewidth, we determined the magic wavelength, where the light shift in the clock transition vanishes, to be $813.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.9\text{ }\mathrm{n}\mathrm{m}$.

Absolute frequency measurements on the 5 s 5 p 3 P 0 → 5 s 6 d 3 D 1 transition in strontium

Shengnan Zhang, B. S. Tiwari, Sandhya Ganesh +2 more

We report the first absolute frequency measurements for the 5 s 5 p 3 P 0 → 5 s 6 d 3 D 1 transition at 394 nm for all the stable strontium isotopes by utilizing repumping induced spectroscopy in a magneto-optical trap. Absolute transition frequency is measured to be 760524409251(25) kHz for Sr 88 . With reference to Sr 88 , the isotope shifts are measured to be 91052(35), 54600(33), and 51641(28) kHz for Sr 84 , Sr 86 , and Sr 87 , respectively. We calculate the hyperfine constants A and B for the fermionic isotope Sr 87 at kHz level. Furthermore, we perform King plot analysis by combining isotope shifts on the 689-nm transition to our data.
