Abstract

We report a frequency measurement on the $5s5p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}P_{2}\ensuremath{-}5s4d\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}D_{3}$ transition of $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$ atoms at $2.9\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. The excitation spectra are obtained by measuring the photon momenta transferred to ultracold atoms. The transition frequency is determined to be 102 550 196 205(9) kHz using an erbium fiber-based optical frequency comb. We numerically investigate possible frequency corrections by taking an acceleration of atoms and attenuation of the excitation light into account. This measurement technique is particularly useful for transitions where laser-induced fluorescence is difficult to observe but the spatial imaging of atoms is possible.

Spectroscopy and frequency measurement of the87Sr clock transition by laser linewidth transfer using an optical frequency comb

Daisuke Akamatsu, Hajime Inaba, Kazumoto Hosaka +5 more

We performed spectroscopic observations of the 698-nm clock transition in 87 Sr confined in an optical lattice using a laser linewidth transfer technique. A narrow-linewidth laser interrogating the clock transition was prepared by transferring the linewidth of a master laser (1064 nm) to that of a slave laser (698 nm) with a high-speed controllable fiber-based frequency comb. The Fourier-limited spectrum was then observed for an 80-ms interrogating pulse. We determined that the absolute frequency of the 5s 2 1 S 0 –5s5p 3 P 0 clock transition in 87 Sr is 429 228 004 229 872.0 (1.6) Hz referenced to the SI second.

Frequency of the ultranarrow S01−P23 transition in Sr87

O. Onishchenko, Sergey Pyatchenkov, Alexander Urech +4 more

We determine the frequency of the ultranarrow $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ transition by spectroscopy of an ultracold gas. This transition is referenced to four molecular iodine lines that are observed by Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy of hot iodine vapor. The frequency differences between the Sr and the ${\mathrm{I}}_{2}$ transitions are measured with an uncertainty of $0.5\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$. The absolute frequency of the $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ (${\text{F}}^{\ensuremath{'}}=7/2$) transition is $446\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}648\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}775(30)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$ and limited in accuracy by the iodine reference. This work prepares the use of the Sr $^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ transition for quantum simulation and computation.

Repumping and spectroscopy of laser-cooled Sr atoms using the (5s5p)3P2–(5s4d)3D2transition

Pascal G. Mickelson, Y N Martinez de Escobar, P Anzel +5 more

We describe repumping and spectroscopy of laser-cooled strontium (Sr) atoms using the (5s5p) 3 P 2 –(5s4d) 3 D 2 transition. Atom number in a magneto-optical trap is enhanced by driving this transition because Sr atoms that have decayed into the (5s5p) 3 P 2 dark state are repumped back into the (5s 2 ) 1 S 0 ground state. Spectroscopy of 84 Sr, 86 Sr, 87 Sr and 88 Sr improves the value of the (5s5p) 3 P 2 –(5s4d) 3 D 2 transition frequency and determines the isotope shifts for the transition accurately enough to guide laser-cooling experiments with less abundant isotopes.

The Optimization of Cold Rubidium Atom Two-Photon Transition Excitation with an Erbium-Fiber Optical Frequency Comb

Haoyuan Lu, Jianxiao Leng, Jianye Zhao

We demonstrated the observation of cold rubidium atom two-photon transition excitation by a fiber optical frequency comb. In addition to this, we optimized the repetition rate of optical frequency comb to enhance two-photon intensity by controlling cavity length and pump source of optical comb. This technique can fine tune repetition rate to corresponding stepwise two-photon transition resonance frequency and improve the transition intensity by three times. This method is useful in Doppler laser cooling and detection of macromolecules.

Frequency measurement of 6s6p 3P0,2−6s7s 3S1 transitions in ultracold 171Yb atoms referenced to local optical clock

Hao Qiao, Changyue Sun, Chengquan Peng +4 more

We experimentally determine the absolute frequencies and hyperfine splittings of the 6s6p 3P0,2 − 6s7s 3S1 transitions of ultracold 171Yb atoms in an optical lattice. A frequency comb referenced to an ultrastable optical cavity is used to measure the electric-dipole transition frequencies. With the normalized shelving detection technique, about 12 MHz and 10 MHz linewidth of atomic spectra are obtained, respectively, which is some greater than the natural linewidth of 1.5 MHz and 5.9 MHz and is limited by the broadening from the probe and lattice light. By reference to our 171Yb 6 s2 1S0 − 6s6p 3P0 clock, the absolute frequencies are found to be 461861338.03 (0.21) MHz and 461871596.07 (0.31) MHz for the 6s6p 3P0 − 6s7s 3S1 (F = 1/2 and F = 3/2) transitions, which are more accurate than the previous measurement by one order of magnitude. For the 6s6p 3P2 (F = 3/2 and F = 5/2) − 6s7s 3S1 (F = 1/2 and F = 3/2) transitions, the measured frequencies are 389257019.71 (0.65) MHz, 389267277.10 (0.37) MHz and 389260569.95 (0.89) MHz, respectively, which are the first measurements to our knowledge. Furthermore, the hyperfine constants for the 6s6p 3P2 and 6s7s 3S1 states are determined to be 2682.86(0.38) MHz and 6838.69(0.25) MHz, both of which agree well with other recent experimental results.

Improved absolute frequency measurement of the 115In+ 5s 2 1 S 0-5s5p 3 P 0 narrowline transition: Progress towards an optical frequency standard

Y. H. Wang, Tao Liu, Rainer Dumke +7 more

We report on an improved absolute frequency measurement of the 5s 2 1 S 00-5s5p 3 P 0 narrowline clock transition at 236.5 nm, for a single, trapped, and laser-cooled 115In ion. Using a narrowline laser as the local oscillator, a linewidth of 43 Hz for the transition is resolved. The uncertainty of the transition frequency’s centroid is 18 Hz, leading to a fractional uncertainty of 1.4 × 10−14. For absolute frequency measurement, we use an optical frequency comb locked to a cesium clock as the reference. The transition frequency is found to be 1267402452900967(63) Hz, averaged over 13 days of separate measurements. The accuracy is about 5.0 × 10−14. We discuss possibilities for further improvement.
