Abstract

We present a detailed investigation of the ultranarrow magnetic-quadrupole $^{1}\mathrm{S}_{0}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{3}\mathrm{P}_{2}$ transition in neutral strontium and show how it can be made accessible for quantum simulation and quantum computation. By engineering the light shift in a one-dimensional optical lattice, we perform high-resolution spectroscopy and observe the characteristic absorption patterns for a magnetic quadrupole transition. We measure an absolute transition frequency of $446,647,242,704(2)$ kHz in $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$ and an $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$ isotope shift of $+62.91(4)$ MHz. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we use this transition to demonstrate local addressing in an optical lattice with 532 nm spacing with a Rayleigh-criterion resolution of $494(45)$ nm. Our results pave the way for applications of the magnetic quadrupole transition as an optical qubit and for single-site addressing in optical lattices.

Long-Lived Coherence on a μ Hz Scale Optical Magnetic Quadrupole Transition

V. Klüsener, Sebastian Pucher, Dimitry Yankelev +7 more

We report on the coherent excitation of the ultranarrow ^{1}S_{0}-^{3}P_{2} magnetic quadrupole transition in ^{88}Sr. By confining atoms in a state insensitive optical lattice, we achieve excitation fractions of 97(1)% and observe linewidths as narrow as 58(1) Hz. With Ramsey spectroscopy, we find coherence times of 14(1) ms, which can be extended to 266(36) ms using a spin-echo sequence. We determine the lifetime of the ^{3}P_{2} level for spontaneous emission of magnetic quadrupole radiation to be 110(31) min, confirming long-standing theoretical predictions. These results establish an additional clock transition in strontium and pave the way for applications of the metastable ^{3}P_{2} state in quantum computing and quantum simulations.

Experimental determination of the E2−M1 polarizability of the strontium clock transition

Sören Dörscher, J. Klose, S. Marathapalli +1 more

State-of-the-art optical lattice clocks require careful characterization of systematic frequency shifts, which often needs to include contributions to the coupling of atoms to the trapping light field that are beyond the electric-dipole approximation. An experimental determination of the light-shift coefficient that accounts for electric-quadrupole and magnetic-dipole transitions for the clock transition in neutral strontium is reported on, addressing the substantial discrepancy between values detailed in previous works from theory and experiment.

Fine-Structure Qubit Encoded in Metastable Strontium Trapped in an Optical Lattice

Sebastian Pucher, V. Klüsener, F. Spriestersbach +4 more

We demonstrate coherent control of the fine-structure qubit in neutral strontium atoms. This qubit is encoded in the metastable ^{3}P_{2} and ^{3}P_{0} states, coupled by a Raman transition. Using a magnetic quadrupole transition, we demonstrate coherent state initialization of this THz qubit. We show Rabi oscillations with more than 60 coherent cycles and single-qubit rotations on the μs scale. With spin echo, we demonstrate coherence times of tens of ms. Our results pave the way for fast quantum information processors and highly tunable quantum simulators with two-electron atoms.

Frequency of the ultranarrow S01−P23 transition in Sr87

O. Onishchenko, Sergey Pyatchenkov, Alexander Urech +4 more

We determine the frequency of the ultranarrow $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ transition by spectroscopy of an ultracold gas. This transition is referenced to four molecular iodine lines that are observed by Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy of hot iodine vapor. The frequency differences between the Sr and the ${\mathrm{I}}_{2}$ transitions are measured with an uncertainty of $0.5\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$. The absolute frequency of the $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ (${\text{F}}^{\ensuremath{'}}=7/2$) transition is $446\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}648\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}775(30)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$ and limited in accuracy by the iodine reference. This work prepares the use of the Sr $^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}^{3}P_{2}$ transition for quantum simulation and computation.

Absolute frequency measurements on the 5 s 5 p 3 P 0 → 5 s 6 d 3 D 1 transition in strontium

Shengnan Zhang, B. S. Tiwari, Sandhya Ganesh +2 more

We report the first absolute frequency measurements for the 5 s 5 p 3 P 0 → 5 s 6 d 3 D 1 transition at 394 nm for all the stable strontium isotopes by utilizing repumping induced spectroscopy in a magneto-optical trap. Absolute transition frequency is measured to be 760524409251(25) kHz for Sr 88 . With reference to Sr 88 , the isotope shifts are measured to be 91052(35), 54600(33), and 51641(28) kHz for Sr 84 , Sr 86 , and Sr 87 , respectively. We calculate the hyperfine constants A and B for the fermionic isotope Sr 87 at kHz level. Furthermore, we perform King plot analysis by combining isotope shifts on the 689-nm transition to our data. Spectroscopy of the $5s5p$ $ ^3 P_0 \rightarrow 5s5d$ $ ^3 D_1 $ transition of strontium using laser cooled atoms

Kushal Patel, Palki Gakkhar, Korak Biswas +5 more

This article presents spectroscopy results of the $5s5p{\;^3}P_0 \rightarrow 5s5d{\;^3}D_1$ transition in all isotopes of laser cooled Sr atoms and the utility of this transition for repumping application. By employing the $5s5p{\;^{3} P_{0}} \rightarrow 5s5d{\;^3}D_1 $ (483 nm) transition in combination with the excitation of $5s5p{\;^3}P_2 \rightarrow 5s6s{\;^3}S_1$ (707 nm) transition, we observe a significant increase ($\sim$ 13 fold) in the steady state number of atoms in the magneto-optic trap (MOT). This enhancement is attributed to the efficient repumping of Sr atoms that have decayed into the dark $5s5p{\;^3}P_2$ state by returning them to the ground state $5s^2{\;^1}S_0$ without any loss into the other states. The absolute transition frequencies were measured with an absolute accuracy of 30 MHz. To support our measurements, we performed Fock-space relativistic coupled-cluster calculations of the relevant parameters in Sr. To further increase the accuracy of the calculated properties, corrections from the Breit, QED and perturbative triples were also included. The calculated branching ratio for the repumping state confirms the significantly increased population in the ${^3}P_1$ state. Thereby, leading to an increase of population of atoms trapped due to the enhanced repumping. Our calculated hyperfine-splitting energies are in excellent agreement with the measured values. Moreover, our calculated isotope shifts in the transition frequencies are in good agreement with our measured values.
