Resource Theory of Coherence Based on Positive-Operator-Valued Measures

Abstract

Quantum coherence is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics and an underlying requirement for most quantum information tasks. In the resource theory of coherence, incoherent states are diagonal with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis; i.e., they can be seen as arising from a von Neumann measurement. Here, we introduce and study a generalization to a resource theory of coherence defined with respect to the most general quantum measurements, i.e., to arbitrary positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs). We establish POVM-based coherence measures and POVM-incoherent operations that coincide for the case of von Neumann measurements with their counterparts in standard coherence theory. We provide a semidefinite program that allows us to characterize interconversion properties of resource states and exemplify our framework by means of the qubit trine POVM, for which we also show analytical results.

Quantifying coherence with respect to general quantum measurements

Felix Bischof, Hermann Kampermann, Dagmar Bruß

Coherence is a cornerstone of quantum theory and a prerequisite for the advantage of quantum technologies. In recent work, the notion of coherence with respect to a general quantum measurement, i.e., positive operator-valued measure (POVM), was introduced and embedded into a resource-theoretic framework that generalizes the standard resource theory of coherence. In particular, POVM-incoherent (free) states and operations were established. In this work, we explore features of this framework which arise due to the rich structure of POVMs compared to projective measurements. Moreover, we introduce a rigorous, probabilisitic framework for POVM-based coherence measures and free operations. This leads to the introduction of strongly monotonic resource measures that neatly generalize well-known standard coherence measures. Finally, we show that the relative entropy of POVM coherence is equal to the cryptographic randomness gain, providing an important operational meaning to the concept of coherence with respect to a general measurement.

Bounds on positive operator-valued measure based coherence of superposition

Meng‐Li Guo, Jin‐Min Liang, Bo Li +2 more

Quantum coherence is a fundamental feature of quantum physics and plays a significant role in quantum information processing. By generalizing the resource theory of coherence from von Neumann measurements to positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), POVM-based coherence measures have been proposed with respect to the relative entropy of coherence, the l 1 norm of coherence, the robustness of coherence and the Tsallis relative entropy of coherence. We derive analytically the lower and upper bounds on these POVM-based coherence of an arbitrary given superposed pure state in terms of the POVM-based coherence of the states in superposition. Our results can be used to estimate range of quantum coherence of superposed states. Detailed examples are presented to verify our analytical bounds.

Converting coherence based on positive-operator-valued measures into entanglement

Sunho Kim, Chunhe Xiong, Asutosh Kumar +1 more

Quantum resource theories provide a diverse and powerful framework for extensively studying the phenomena in quantum physics. Quantum coherence, a quantum resource, is the basic ingredient in many quantum information tasks. It is a subject of broad and current interest in quantum information, and many new concepts have been introduced and generalized since its establishment. Here we show that the block coherence can be transformed into entanglement via a block-incoherent operation. Moreover, we find that the coherence based on positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs) associated with block coherence through the Naimark extension acts as a potential resource from the perspective of generating entanglement. Finally, we discuss avenues of creating entanglement from POVM-based coherence, present strategies that require embedding channels and auxiliary systems, give some examples, and generalize them.

Coherence measures with respect to general quantum measurements

Jianwei Xu, Lian-He Shao, Shao-Ming Fei

Quantum coherence with respect to orthonormal bases has been studied extensively in the past few years. Recently, Bischof, Kampermann, and Bru\ss{} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 110402 (2019)] generalized it to the case of general positive operator-valued measure (POVM) measurements. Such POVM-based coherence, including the block coherence as a special case, have significant operational interpretations in quantifying the advantage of quantum states in quantum information processing. In this work we first establish an alternative framework for quantifying the block coherence and provide several block coherence measures. We then present several coherence measures with respect to POVM measurements, and prove a conjecture on the ${l}_{1}$-norm related POVM coherence measure.

Maximal coherence of quantum measurement and the resource theory of sharpness

Kyunghyun Baek, Yonggi Jo, Hyunchul Nha

A resource theory of quantum measurement can be addressed in terms of quantum coherence and measurement sharpness, respectively. The former analyzes the off-diagonal structure of POVM elements in a predetermined basis while the latter analyzes the deviation from trivial, state-independent, measurements. We establish a direct connection between the two resource theories by identifying measurement sharpness as the maximal coherence that is achievable under all possible unitary changes of the reference basis. For a broad class of POVMs whose elements share a common eigenbasis, we show that the maximal distance-based coherence of measurement coincides exactly with the corresponding distance-based sharpness monotone. We further extend this equivalence, with element-additive distances, to POVMs whose elements admit a common mutually unbiased basis structure. These results provide a measurement-theoretic analogue of the maximal-coherence \& purity correspondence for quantum states. We also show that the maximal coherence of measurement is faithful with respect to trivial measurements and is monotonic under fuzzifying operations for dichotomic measurements, as well as under mixed-unitary and unitarily covariant preprocessing channels. Finally, we illustrate the operational meaning and limitations of the equivalence through qubit POVMs, single-photon phase sensing, and noisy photon-number resolving detection. In particular, the maximal Fisher information in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is shown to be determined by the squared maximal coherence of the measurement, while in an imperfect photon-number resolving detector the maximal coherence behaves as a proper sharpness monotone, unlike conventional PVM-based unsharpness measures.

Structure of resource theory of block coherence

P. K. Dey, D. Chakraborty, Priyabrata Char +3 more

Emerging from the superposition principle, the resource theory of coherence plays a crucial role in many information-processing tasks. Recently, a generalization to this resource theory was investigated with respect to arbitrary positive operator valued measurement (POVM) based on Naimark's dilation theorem. Here, we introduce the notion of Block Incoherent Operations (BIO), Strictly Block Incoherent Operations (SBIO) and Physically Block Incoherent Operations (PBIO) and provide an analytical expression for Kraus operators of these operations to have a better understanding of the resource theory of block coherence which in turn gives a more clear picture of POVM based resource theory of coherence. A dilation theorem corresponding to SBIO has been introduced to enlighten the proper physical interpretation of this operation. These free operations will be helpful in finding out the conditions of state transformations and could be implemented in various protocols. For a transparent view of this resource theory, we have successfully introduced the concept of state transformation under SBIO.
