Abstract

Emerging from the superposition principle, the resource theory of coherence plays a crucial role in many information-processing tasks. Recently, a generalization to this resource theory was investigated with respect to arbitrary positive operator valued measurement (POVM) based on Naimark's dilation theorem. Here, we introduce the notion of Block Incoherent Operations (BIO), Strictly Block Incoherent Operations (SBIO) and Physically Block Incoherent Operations (PBIO) and provide an analytical expression for Kraus operators of these operations to have a better understanding of the resource theory of block coherence which in turn gives a more clear picture of POVM based resource theory of coherence. A dilation theorem corresponding to SBIO has been introduced to enlighten the proper physical interpretation of this operation. These free operations will be helpful in finding out the conditions of state transformations and could be implemented in various protocols. For a transparent view of this resource theory, we have successfully introduced the concept of state transformation under SBIO.

Pure State Transformations under Block Coherence

Dipayan Chakraborty, Priyabrata Char, Indrani Chattopadhyay +1 more

Block coherence provides a natural generalization of standard quantum coherence by treating superpositions across different subspaces as a resource. This work studies deterministic pure-state conversion under three free operations: physically block incoherent operations (PBIO), strictly block incoherent operations (SBIO), and block dephasing covariant incoherent operations (BDCO). For PBIO, we prove that, under a natural nondegeneracy condition on the active Kraus branches, any deterministic conversion from one pure state to another must be implemented by a block incoherent unitary. When the nondegeneracy requirement is removed, the condition becomes more general. It demands that the blockwise action of every active branch reproduce the target block structure with a common proportionality factor across all output blocks. For SBIO and BDCO, we show that deterministic pure-state transformation is completely characterized by the majorization relation between the input and output block probability vectors. The converse proof is constructive, yielding an explicit Kraus representation for every admissible BDCO transformation. In the rank-one limit, these conditions reduce to the known pure-state transformation criteria for physically incoherent operations (PIO), strictly incoherent operations (SIO), and dephasing covariant incoherent operations (DIO) in the standard resource theory of coherence. Using the majorization condition, a maximally block-coherent state with uniform block weights is also identified as a universal pure-state resource under BDCO and SBIO. We have also provided geometric numerical illustrations comparing the state transformation power of BDCO and DIO for a fixed input state, fixed output state and mutual convertibility scenarios.

Resource Theory of Coherence Based on Positive-Operator-Valued Measures

Felix Bischof, Hermann Kampermann, Dagmar Bruß

Quantum coherence is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics and an underlying requirement for most quantum information tasks. In the resource theory of coherence, incoherent states are diagonal with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis; i.e., they can be seen as arising from a von Neumann measurement. Here, we introduce and study a generalization to a resource theory of coherence defined with respect to the most general quantum measurements, i.e., to arbitrary positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs). We establish POVM-based coherence measures and POVM-incoherent operations that coincide for the case of von Neumann measurements with their counterparts in standard coherence theory. We provide a semidefinite program that allows us to characterize interconversion properties of resource states and exemplify our framework by means of the qubit trine POVM, for which we also show analytical results.

Converting coherence based on positive-operator-valued measures into entanglement

Sunho Kim, Chunhe Xiong, Asutosh Kumar +1 more

Quantum resource theories provide a diverse and powerful framework for extensively studying the phenomena in quantum physics. Quantum coherence, a quantum resource, is the basic ingredient in many quantum information tasks. It is a subject of broad and current interest in quantum information, and many new concepts have been introduced and generalized since its establishment. Here we show that the block coherence can be transformed into entanglement via a block-incoherent operation. Moreover, we find that the coherence based on positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs) associated with block coherence through the Naimark extension acts as a potential resource from the perspective of generating entanglement. Finally, we discuss avenues of creating entanglement from POVM-based coherence, present strategies that require embedding channels and auxiliary systems, give some examples, and generalize them.

Quantifying coherence with respect to general quantum measurements

Felix Bischof, Hermann Kampermann, Dagmar Bruß

Coherence is a cornerstone of quantum theory and a prerequisite for the advantage of quantum technologies. In recent work, the notion of coherence with respect to a general quantum measurement, i.e., positive operator-valued measure (POVM), was introduced and embedded into a resource-theoretic framework that generalizes the standard resource theory of coherence. In particular, POVM-incoherent (free) states and operations were established. In this work, we explore features of this framework which arise due to the rich structure of POVMs compared to projective measurements. Moreover, we introduce a rigorous, probabilisitic framework for POVM-based coherence measures and free operations. This leads to the introduction of strongly monotonic resource measures that neatly generalize well-known standard coherence measures. Finally, we show that the relative entropy of POVM coherence is equal to the cryptographic randomness gain, providing an important operational meaning to the concept of coherence with respect to a general measurement.

Block-coherence measures and coherence measures based on positive-operator-valued measures

Liangxue Fu, Fengli Yan, Ting Gao

Abstract We study block-coherence measures based on the resource theory of block-coherence and coherence measures based on positive-operator-valued measures (POVM). Several block-coherence measures are presented, including the block-coherence measure based on maximum relative entropy, the one-shot block-coherence cost under maximally block-incoherent operations, and the coherence measure based on coherent rank. Their relationships are obtained. Moreover, we describe the deterministic coherence dilution process by constructing block-incoherent operations. Based on the POVM coherence resource theory, we also propose two coherence measures and analyze their relationship.

Structure of the Resource Theory of Quantum Coherence

Alexander Streltsov, Swapan Rana, Paul Boës +1 more

Quantum coherence is an essential feature of quantum mechanics which is responsible for the departure between the classical and quantum world. The recently established resource theory of quantum coherence studies possible quantum technological applications of quantum coherence, and limitations that arise if one is lacking the ability to establish superpositions. An important open problem in this context is a simple characterization for incoherent operations, constituted by all possible transformations allowed within the resource theory of coherence. In this Letter, we contribute to such a characterization by proving several upper bounds on the maximum number of incoherent Kraus operators in a general incoherent operation. For a single qubit, we show that the number of incoherent Kraus operators is not more than 5, and it remains an open question if this number can be reduced to 4. The presented results are also relevant for quantum thermodynamics, as we demonstrate by introducing the class of Gibbs-preserving strictly incoherent operations, and solving the corresponding mixed-state conversion problem for a single qubit.
