Abstract

Block coherence provides a natural generalization of standard quantum coherence by treating superpositions across different subspaces as a resource. This work studies deterministic pure-state conversion under three free operations: physically block incoherent operations (PBIO), strictly block incoherent operations (SBIO), and block dephasing covariant incoherent operations (BDCO). For PBIO, we prove that, under a natural nondegeneracy condition on the active Kraus branches, any deterministic conversion from one pure state to another must be implemented by a block incoherent unitary. When the nondegeneracy requirement is removed, the condition becomes more general. It demands that the blockwise action of every active branch reproduce the target block structure with a common proportionality factor across all output blocks. For SBIO and BDCO, we show that deterministic pure-state transformation is completely characterized by the majorization relation between the input and output block probability vectors. The converse proof is constructive, yielding an explicit Kraus representation for every admissible BDCO transformation. In the rank-one limit, these conditions reduce to the known pure-state transformation criteria for physically incoherent operations (PIO), strictly incoherent operations (SIO), and dephasing covariant incoherent operations (DIO) in the standard resource theory of coherence. Using the majorization condition, a maximally block-coherent state with uniform block weights is also identified as a universal pure-state resource under BDCO and SBIO. We have also provided geometric numerical illustrations comparing the state transformation power of BDCO and DIO for a fixed input state, fixed output state and mutual convertibility scenarios.

Structure of resource theory of block coherence

P. K. Dey, D. Chakraborty, Priyabrata Char +3 more

Emerging from the superposition principle, the resource theory of coherence plays a crucial role in many information-processing tasks. Recently, a generalization to this resource theory was investigated with respect to arbitrary positive operator valued measurement (POVM) based on Naimark's dilation theorem. Here, we introduce the notion of Block Incoherent Operations (BIO), Strictly Block Incoherent Operations (SBIO) and Physically Block Incoherent Operations (PBIO) and provide an analytical expression for Kraus operators of these operations to have a better understanding of the resource theory of block coherence which in turn gives a more clear picture of POVM based resource theory of coherence. A dilation theorem corresponding to SBIO has been introduced to enlighten the proper physical interpretation of this operation. These free operations will be helpful in finding out the conditions of state transformations and could be implemented in various protocols. For a transparent view of this resource theory, we have successfully introduced the concept of state transformation under SBIO.

Generalized physically incoherent operations

Ping Li, Yongming Li

Quantum coherence is an intrinsic property within a single quantum system. Many different coherent resource theories have been proposed to characterize this property within the framework of resource theory. This difference is based on the difference in the identification of ``free'' operations. In this article, generalized physically incoherent operations, which are strictly contained in the intersection of incoherent operations and dephasing-covariant operations (dephasing-covariant incoherent incoherent operations), are introduced. We characterize the Kraus operators of dephasing-covariant incoherent incoherent operations and generalized physically incoherent operations, and further study the coherent state transformations under generalized physically incoherent operations. Specifically, we investigate the constraints imposed by the rank of the initial state on the extraction of a pure coherent state. Additionally, we present a sufficient condition for the transformation from a mixed state to a pure state ensemble.

Coherence transformations in single qubit systems

Hailong Shi, Xiao-Hui Wang, Siyuan Liu +3 more

We investigate the single qubit transformations under several typical coherence-free operations, such as, incoherent operation (IO), strictly incoherent operation (SIO), physically incoherent operation (PIO), and coherence-preserving operation (CPO). Quantitative connection has been built between IO and SIO in single qubit systems. Moreover, these coherence-free operations have a clear hierarchical relationship in single qubit systems: CPO ⊂ PIO ⊂ SIO=IO. A new and explicit proof for the necessary and sufficient condition of single qubit transformation via IO or SIO has been provided, which indicates that SIO with only two Kraus operators are enough to realize this transformation. The transformation regions of single qubits via CPO and PIO are also given. Our method provides a geometric illustration to analyze single qubit coherence transformations by introducing the Bloch sphere depiction of the transformation regions, and tells us how to construct the corresponding coherence-free operations.

Probabilistic Distillation of Quantum Coherence

Kun Fang, Xin Wang, Ludovico Lami +2 more

The ability to distill quantum coherence is pivotal for optimizing the performance of quantum technologies; however, such a task cannot always be accomplished with certainty. Here we develop a general framework of probabilistic distillation of quantum coherence in a one-shot setting, establishing fundamental limitations for different classes of free operations. We first provide a geometric interpretation for the maximal success probability, showing that under maximally incoherent operations (MIO) and dephasing-covariant incoherent operations (DIO) the problem can be simplified into efficiently computable semidefinite programs. Exploiting these results, we find that DIO and its subset of strictly incoherent operations have equal power in the probabilistic distillation of coherence from pure input states, while MIO are strictly stronger. We then prove a fundamental no-go result: Distilling coherence from any full-rank state is impossible even probabilistically. We further find that in some conditions the maximal success probability can vanish suddenly beyond a certain threshold in the distillation fidelity. Finally, we consider probabilistic coherence distillation assisted by a catalyst and demonstrate, with specific examples, its superiority to the unassisted and deterministic cases.

One-Shot Coherence Distillation

Bartosz Regula, Kun Fang, Xin Wang +1 more

We characterize the distillation of quantum coherence in the one-shot setting, that is, the conversion of general quantum states into maximally coherent states under different classes of quantum operations. We show that the maximally incoherent operations (MIO) and the dephasing-covariant incoherent operations (DIO) have the same power in the task of one-shot coherence distillation. We establish that the one-shot distillable coherence under MIO and DIO is efficiently computable with a semidefinite program, which we show to correspond to a quantum hypothesis testing problem. Further, we introduce a family of coherence monotones generalizing the robustness of coherence as well as the modified trace distance of coherence, and show that they admit an operational interpretation in characterizing the fidelity of distillation under different classes of operations. By providing an explicit formula for these quantities for pure states, we show that the one-shot distillable coherence under MIO, DIO, strictly incoherent operations, and incoherent operations is equal for all pure states.

Critical Examination of Incoherent Operations and a Physically Consistent Resource Theory of Quantum Coherence

Eric Chitambar, Gilad Gour

Considerable work has recently been directed toward developing resource theories of quantum coherence. In this Letter, we establish a criterion of physical consistency for any resource theory. This criterion requires that all free operations in a given resource theory be implementable by a unitary evolution and projective measurement that are both free operations in an extended resource theory. We show that all currently proposed basis-dependent theories of coherence fail to satisfy this criterion. We further characterize the physically consistent resource theory of coherence and find its operational power to be quite limited. After relaxing the condition of physical consistency, we introduce the class of dephasing-covariant incoherent operations as a natural generalization of the physically consistent operations. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the convertibility of qubit states using dephasing-covariant operations, and we show that these conditions also hold for other well-known classes of incoherent operations.
