Abstract

In this work we study the scattering of pairs of photons by a two-level system ultrastrongly coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. We describe this problem using a spin-boson model with an Ohmic environment $J(ω)=παω^1.$ We show that when coupling strength lays is about $α\leq 1,$ the dynamics is well approximated by a polaron Hamiltonian, under the approximation of a conserved number of excitations. In this regime, we develop analytical predictions for the single- and two-photon scattering matrix computed with a Green's function method.

Scattering in the Ultrastrong Regime: Nonlinear Optics with One Photon

Eduardo Sánchez-Burillo, David Zueco, Juan José García‐Ripoll +1 more

The scattering of a flying photon by a two-level system ultrastrongly coupled to a one-dimensional photonic waveguide is studied numerically. The photonic medium is modeled as an array of coupled cavities and the whole system is analyzed beyond the rotating wave approximation using matrix product states. It is found that the scattering is strongly influenced by the single- and multiphoton dressed bound states present in the system. In the ultrastrong coupling regime a new channel for inelastic scattering appears, where an incident photon deposits energy into the qubit, exciting a photon-bound state, and escaping with a lower frequency. This single-photon nonlinear frequency conversion process can reach up to 50% efficiency. Other remarkable features in the scattering induced by counterrotating terms are a blueshift of the reflection resonance and a Fano resonance due to long-lived excited states.

Ultrastrong Coupling Few-Photon Scattering Theory

Tao Shi, Yue Chang, Juan José García‐Ripoll

We study the scattering of individual photons by a two-level system ultrastrongly coupled to a waveguide. The scattering is elastic for a broad range of couplings and can be described with an effective U(1)-symmetric Hamiltonian. This simple model allows the prediction of scattering resonance line shapes, validated up to α=0.3, and close to the Toulouse point α=1/2, where inelastic scattering becomes relevant. Our predictions model experiments with superconducting circuits [P. Forn-Díaz et al., Nat. Phys. 13, 39 (2017)NPAHAX1745-247310.1038/nphys3905] and can be extended to study multiphoton scattering.

Distant emitters in ultrastrong waveguide QED: Ground-state properties and non-Markovian dynamics

Carlos A. González-Gutiérrez, Juan Román-Roche, David Zueco

Starting from the paradigmatic spin-boson model (SBM), we investigate the static and dynamical properties of a system of two distant two-level emitters coupled to a one-dimensional Ohmic waveguide beyond the rotating wave approximation. Employing static and dynamical polaron Ans\"atze we study the effects of finite separation distance on the behavior of the photon-mediated Ising-like interaction, qubit frequency renormalization, ground-state magnetization, and entanglement entropy of the two-qubit system. Based on previous works we derive an effective approximate Hamiltonian for the two-impurity SBM that preserves the excitation-number and thus facilitates the analytical treatment. In particular, it allows us to introduce non-Markovianity arising from delay-feedback effects in two distant emitters in the so-called ultrastrong coupling (USC) regime. We test our results with numerical simulations performed over a discretized circuit-QED model, finding perfect agreement with previous results, and showing interesting dynamical effects arising in ultrastrong waveguide QED with distant emitters. In particular, we revisit the Fermi two-atom problem showing that, in the USC regime, initial correlations yield two different evolutions for symmetric and antisymmetric states even before the emitters become causally connected. Finally, we demonstrate that the collective dynamics, e.g., superradiance or subradiance, are affected not only by the distance between emitters, but also by the coupling, due to significant frequency renormalization. This constitutes another dynamical consequence of the USC regime.

Dynamics of a qubit in a high-impedance transmission line from a bath perspective

Soumya Bera, Harold U. Baranger, Serge Florens

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a generic model of light-matter interaction in the context of high-impedance waveguides, focusing on the behavior of the photonic states generated in the waveguide. The model treated consists simply of a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath (the Ohmic spin-boson model). Quantum quenches as well as scattering of an incident coherent pulse are studied using two complementary methods. First, we develop an approximate ansatz for the electromagnetic waves based on a single multimode coherent state wave function; formally, this approach combines in a single framework ideas from adiabatic renormalization, the Born-Markov approximation, and input-output theory. Second, we present numerically exact results for scattering of a weak intensity pulse by using numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations. NRG provides a benchmark for any linear response property throughout the ultrastrong-coupling regime. We find that in a sudden quantum quench, the coherent state approach produces physical artifacts, such as improper relaxation to the steady state. These previously unnoticed problems are related to the simplified form of the ansatz that generates spurious correlations within the bath. In the scattering problem, NRG is used to find the transmission and reflection of a single photon, as well as the inelastic scattering of that single photon. Simple analytical formulas are established and tested against the NRG data that predict quantitatively the transport coefficients for up to moderate environmental impedance. These formulas resolve pending issues regarding the presence of inelastic losses in the spin-boson model near absorption resonances, and could be used for comparison to experiments in Josephson waveguide quantum electrodynamics. Finally, the scattering results using the coherent state wave-function approach are compared favorably to the NRG results for very weak incident intensity. We end our study by presenting results at higher power where the response of the system is nonlinear.

Diagrammatic approach to multiphoton scattering

Tian Feng See, Changsuk Noh, Dimitris G. Angelakis

We present a method to systematically study multiphoton transmission in one-dimensional systems comprised of correlated quantum emitters coupled to input and output waveguides. Within the Green's function approach of the scattering matrix $(S$ matrix), we develop a diagrammatic technique to analytically obtain the system's scattering amplitudes while at the same time visualize all the possible absorption and emission processes. Our method helps to reduce the significant effort in finding the general response of a many-body bosonic system, particularly the nonlinear response embedded in the Green's functions. We demonstrate our proposal through physically relevant examples involving scattering of multiphoton states from two-level emitters as well as from arrays of correlated Kerr nonlinear resonators in the Bose-Hubbard model.
