Optical qubit generation via atomic postselection in a Ramsey interferometer

Abstract

Abstract We propose a realizable experimental scheme to prepare a superposition of the vacuum and one-photon states using a typical cavity QED-setup. This is different from previous schemes, where the superposition state of the field is generated by resonant atom-field interaction and the cavity is initially empty. Here, we consider only dispersive atom-field interaction and the initial state of the cavity field is coherent. Then, we determine the parameters to prepare the desired state via atomic postselection. We also include the effect of cavity losses and detection imperfections in our analysis, against which this preparation of the optical qubit in a real Fabry–Pérot superconducting cavity is robust. Additionally, we show that this scheme can be used for the preparation of other photon number Fock state superpositions. In summary, our task is achieved with a high fidelity and a postselection probability within experimental reach.

Qubit generation and photon cooling in a Ramsey interferometer

In short, our task is achieved with high fidelity and a post-selection probability within experimental reach. With the same scheme, we propose to cool the cavity field to its ground state starting from a thermal distribution by a dispersive atom-field coupling followed by an atomic post-selection. We also analyze the effect of the cavity and atomic losses. The proposed experiment can be realized with real parameters with high fidelity.

Measurement-induced generation of Schrödinger cat states in cavity QED

Tong Wang, Peng-Fei Wei, Hai-Jun Xing +1 more

Schrödinger cat states, representing coherent superpositions of macroscopically distinguishable states, are indispensable nonclassical resources for continuous-variable quantum information processing. Existing generation protocols typically rely on strong nonlinear interactions, complicated control techniques, or engineered dissipation, posing challenges for experimental implementation. Here, we propose a simple measurement-based protocol for generating Schrödinger cat states in a cavity-QED system by combining coherent driving, dispersive atom--cavity interactions, and atomic postselection. The atom--cavity interaction establishes coherent correlations between the atomic and photonic degrees of freedom, while the subsequent atomic postselection projects the cavity field onto a non-Gaussian superposition state with pronounced Wigner negativity. Numerical simulations based on the Lindblad master equation show that the generated Schrödinger cat states remain robust against moderate cavity dissipation. Our results demonstrate that conditional atomic measurements provide an effective and experimentally accessible approach for preparing nonclassical cavity states without relying on strong optical nonlinearities or engineered dissipation.

Ramsey Interferometry with a Single Photon Field in Cavity QED

S. Osnaghi, Arno Rauschenbeutel, Patrice Bertet +4 more

We present the experimental realisation of a cavity QED atom interferometer based on two consecutive resonant interactions of a circular Rydberg atom with the field mode of a high Q microwave resonator that is initially prepared in the vacuum state. The interferometer scheme is analogous to the Ramsey method with the classical field replaced by the quantum field stored in the cavity mode. We demonstrate the possibility to use this technique to probe, by dispersive interaction, the field stored in a second mode of the resonator.

We propose, in a Ramsey interferometer, to cool the cavity field to its ground state, starting from a thermal distribution by a dispersive atom-field coupling followed by an atomic postselection. We also analyze the effect of the cavity and atomic losses. The proposed experiment can be realized with realistic parameters with high fidelity.

Superposition and entanglement of mesoscopic squeezed vacuum states in cavity QED

Changyong Chen, Mang Feng, Kelin Gao

We propose a scheme to generate superposition and entanglement between the mesoscopic squeezed vacuum states by considering the two-photon interaction of $N$ two-level atoms in a cavity with high quality factor, assisted by a strong driving field. By virtue of specific choices of the cavity detuning, a number of multiparty entangled states can be prepared, including the entanglement between the atomic and the squeezed vacuum cavity states and between the squeezed vacuum states and the coherent states of the cavities. We also present how to prepare entangled states and ``Schr\"odinger cats'' states regarding the squeezed vacuum states of the cavity modes. The possible extension and application of our scheme are discussed. Our scheme is close to the reach with current cavity QED techniques.

Engineering maximally entangledN-photon NOON field states using an atom interferometer based on Bragg regime cavity QED

Rameez‐ul‐Islam, Manzoor Ikram, Farhan Saif

We propose a scheme for generation of highly non-classical entangled field states of the type in the cavity QED scenario. The scheme utilizes an atomic analogue of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer having a quantized field in the high- Q cavity containing a superposition of zero and one photon that acts as the first beam splitter. The probability for production of the desired states may approach a value close to unity with high fidelity under prevailing experimental conditions.
