Abstract

Based on the recently established parafermionic matrix product states, we study the classification of one-dimensional gapped phases of parafermions with time-reversal (TR) symmetry satisfying ${T}^{2}=1$. Without extra symmetry, it has been found that ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermionic gapped phases can be classified as topological phases, spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) phases, and a trivial phase, which are uniquely labeled by the divisors $n$ of $p$. In the presence of TR symmetry, however, the enriched classification is characterized by three indices $n$, $\ensuremath{\kappa}$, and $\ensuremath{\mu}$, where $\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremath{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ denotes the linear or projective TR actions on the edges, and $\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ indicates the commutation relations between the TR and (fractionalized) charge operator. For the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{r}$-symmetric parafermionic ground states, where $r=p$ for trivial or topological phases, and $r=p/n$ for SSB phases, each original gapped phase with odd $r$ is divided into two phases, while each phase with even $r$ is further separated into four phases. The gapped parafermionic phases with the TR symmetry include the symmetry protected topological phases, symmetry enriched topological phases, and the SSB coexisting symmetry protected topological phases. From analyzing the structures and symmetries of their reduced density matrices of these resulting topological phases, we can obtain the topologically protected degeneracies of their entanglement spectra.

Classifying parafermionic gapped phases using matrix product states

Wen-Tao Xu, Guang-Ming Zhang

In the Fock representation, we construct matrix product states (MPS) for one-dimensional gapped phases for ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions. From the analysis of irreducibility of MPS, we classify all possible gapped phases of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions without extra symmetry other than ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ charge symmetry, including topological phases, spontaneous symmetry breaking phases, and a trivial phase. For all phases, we find the irreducible forms of local matrices of MPS, which span different kinds of graded algebras. The topological phases are characterized by the nontrivial simple ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ graded algebras with the characteristic graded centers, yielding the degeneracies of the full transfer matrix spectra uniquely. However, the spontaneous symmetry breaking phases correspond to the trivial semisimple ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p/n}$ graded algebras, which can be further reduced to the trivial simple ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p/n}$ graded algebras, where $n$ is the divisor of $p$. So the present results provide the complete classification of the parafermionic gapped phases and deepen our understanding of topological phases in one dimension.

Classification of topological phases of parafermionic chains with symmetries

Dganit Meidan, Erez Berg, Ady Stern

We study the topological classification of parafermionic chains in the presence of a modified time-reversal symmetry that satisfies ${\mathcal{T}}^{2}=1$. Such chains can be realized in one-dimensional structures embedded in fractionalized two-dimensional states of matter, e.g., at the edges of a fractional quantum spin Hall system, where counterpropagating modes may be gapped either by backscattering or by coupling to a superconductor. In the absence of any additional symmetries, a chain of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{m}$ parafermions can belong to one of several distinct phases. We find that when the modified time-reversal symmetry is imposed, the classification becomes richer. If $m$ is odd, each of the phases splits into two subclasses. We identify the symmetry-protected phase as a Haldane phase that carries a Kramers doublet at each end. When $m$ is even, each phase splits into four subclasses. The origin of this split is in the emergent Majorana fermions associated with even values of $m$. We demonstrate the appearance of such emergent Majorana zero modes in a system where the constituent particles are either fermions or bosons.

Symmetry-protected topological phases in noninteracting fermion systems

Xiao-Gang Wen

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped quantum phases with a certain symmetry, which can all be smoothly connected to the same trivial product state if we break the symmetry. For noninteracting fermion systems with time reversal ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}$), charge conjugation ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{C}$), and/or $U(1)$ ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}$) symmetries, the total symmetry group can depend on the relations between those symmetry operations, such as $\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}{\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}=\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}$ or $\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}{\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}=\ensuremath{-}\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}$. As a result, the SPT phases of those fermion systems with different symmetry groups have different classifications. In this paper, we use Kitaev's K-theory approach to classify the gapped free-fermion phases for those possible symmetry groups. In particular, we can view the $U(1)$ as a spin rotation. We find that superconductors with the ${S}_{z}$ spin-rotation symmetry are classified by $Z$ in even dimensions, while superconductors with the time reversal plus the ${S}_{z}$ spin-rotation symmetries are classified by $Z$ in odd dimensions. We show that all 10 classes of gapped free-fermion phases can be realized by electron systems with certain symmetries. We also point out that, to properly describe the symmetry of a fermionic system, we need to specify its full symmetry group that includes the fermion number parity transformation ${(\ensuremath{-})}^{\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}}$. The full symmetry group is actually a projective symmetry group.

Complete classification of one-dimensional gapped quantum phases in interacting spin systems

Xie Chen, Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Xiao-Gang Wen

Quantum phases with different orders exist with or without breaking the symmetry of the system. Recently, a classification of gapped quantum phases which do not break time reversal, parity, or on-site unitary symmetry has been given for 1D spin systems by X. Chen, Z.-C. Gu, and X.-G. Wen [Phys. Rev. B 83, 035107 (2011)]. It was found that such symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are labeled by the projective representations of the symmetry group which can be viewed as a symmetry fractionalization. In this paper, we extend the classification of 1D gapped phases by considering SPT phases with combined time reversal, parity, and/or on-site unitary symmetries and also the possibility of symmetry breaking. We clarify how symmetry fractionalizes with combined symmetries and also how symmetry fractionalization coexists with symmetry breaking. In this way, we obtain a complete classification of gapped quantum phases in 1D spin systems. We find that in general, symmetry fractionalization, symmetry breaking, and long-range entanglement (present in 2 or higher dimensions) represent three main mechanisms to generate a very rich set of gapped quantum phases. As an application of our classification, we study the possible SPT phases in 1D fermionic systems, which can be mapped to spin systems by Jordan-Wigner transformation.

Topological and symmetry broken phases of Z N parafermions in one dimension

Roberto Bondesan, Thomas Quella

We classify the gapped phases of Z_N parafermions in one dimension and construct a representative of each phase. Even in the absence of additional symmetries besides parafermionic parity, parafermions may be realized in a variety of phases, one for each divisor n of N. The phases can be characterized by spontaneous symmetry breaking, topology, or a mixture of the two. Purely topological phases arise if n is a unitary divisor, i.e. if n and N/n are co-prime. Our analysis is based on the explicit realization of all symmetry broken gapped phases in the dual Z_N-invariant quantum spin chains.

Topological phases in gapped edges of fractionalized systems

Johannes Motruk, Erez Berg, Ari M. Turner +1 more

Recently, it has been proposed that exotic one-dimensional phases can be realized by gapping out the edge states of a fractional topological insulator. The low-energy edge degrees of freedom are described by a chain of coupled parafermions. We introduce a classification scheme for the phases that can occur in parafermionic chains. We find that the parafermions support both topological symmetry fractionalized phases as well as phases in which the parafermions condense. In the presence of additional symmetries, the phases form a non-Abelian group. As a concrete example of the classification, we consider the effective edge model for a $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3$ fractional topological insulator for which we calculate the entanglement spectra numerically and show that all possible predicted phases can be realized.

Based on the recently established parafermionic matrix product states, we study the classification of one-dimensional gapped phases of parafermions with time-reversal (TR) symmetry satisfying T2=1{T}^{2}=1T2=1. Without extra symmetry, it has been found that Zp{\mathbb{Z}}_{p}Zp parafermionic gapped phases can be classified as topological phases, spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) phases, and a trivial phase, which are uniquely labeled by the divisors nnn of ppp. In the presence of TR symmetry, however, the enriched classification is characterized by three indices nnn, \ensuremathκ\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremathκ, and \ensuremathμ\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremathμ, where \ensuremathκ\ensuremath∈Z2\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremath{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ensuremathκ\ensuremath∈Z2 denotes the linear or projective TR actions on the edges, and \ensuremathμ\ensuremath∈Z2\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ensuremathμ\ensuremath∈Z2 indicates the commutation relations between the TR and (fractionalized) charge operator. For the Zr{\mathbb{Z}}_{r}Zr-symmetric parafermionic ground states, where r=pr=pr=p for trivial or topological phases, and r=p/nr=p/nr=p/n for SSB phases, each original gapped phase with odd rrr is divided into two phases, while each phase with even rrr is further separated into four phases.
In the Fock representation, we construct matrix product states (MPS) for one-dimensional gapped phases for Zp{\mathbb{Z}}_{p}Zp parafermions.
