Abstract

In the Fock representation, we construct matrix product states (MPS) for one-dimensional gapped phases for ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions. From the analysis of irreducibility of MPS, we classify all possible gapped phases of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions without extra symmetry other than ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ charge symmetry, including topological phases, spontaneous symmetry breaking phases, and a trivial phase. For all phases, we find the irreducible forms of local matrices of MPS, which span different kinds of graded algebras. The topological phases are characterized by the nontrivial simple ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ graded algebras with the characteristic graded centers, yielding the degeneracies of the full transfer matrix spectra uniquely. However, the spontaneous symmetry breaking phases correspond to the trivial semisimple ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p/n}$ graded algebras, which can be further reduced to the trivial simple ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p/n}$ graded algebras, where $n$ is the divisor of $p$. So the present results provide the complete classification of the parafermionic gapped phases and deepen our understanding of topological phases in one dimension.

Enriched classification of parafermionic gapped phases with time-reversal symmetry

Wen-Tao Xu, Guang-Ming Zhang

Based on the recently established parafermionic matrix product states, we study the classification of one-dimensional gapped phases of parafermions with time-reversal (TR) symmetry satisfying ${T}^{2}=1$. Without extra symmetry, it has been found that ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermionic gapped phases can be classified as topological phases, spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) phases, and a trivial phase, which are uniquely labeled by the divisors $n$ of $p$. In the presence of TR symmetry, however, the enriched classification is characterized by three indices $n$, $\ensuremath{\kappa}$, and $\ensuremath{\mu}$, where $\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremath{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ denotes the linear or projective TR actions on the edges, and $\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ indicates the commutation relations between the TR and (fractionalized) charge operator. For the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{r}$-symmetric parafermionic ground states, where $r=p$ for trivial or topological phases, and $r=p/n$ for SSB phases, each original gapped phase with odd $r$ is divided into two phases, while each phase with even $r$ is further separated into four phases. The gapped parafermionic phases with the TR symmetry include the symmetry protected topological phases, symmetry enriched topological phases, and the SSB coexisting symmetry protected topological phases. From analyzing the structures and symmetries of their reduced density matrices of these resulting topological phases, we can obtain the topologically protected degeneracies of their entanglement spectra.

Matrix product states for topological phases with parafermions

Wen-Tao Xu, Guang-Ming Zhang

In the Fock representation, we propose a framework to construct the generalized matrix product states (MPS) for topological phases with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions. Unlike the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ Majorana fermions, the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions form intrinsically interacting systems. Here we explicitly construct two topologically distinct classes of irreducible ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ parafermionic MPS wave functions, characterized by one or two parafermionic zero modes at each end of an open chain. Their corresponding parent Hamiltonians are found as the fixed point models of the single ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ parafermion chain and two-coupled parafermion chains with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ symmetry. Our results thus pave the road to investigate all possible topological phases with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions within the matrix product representation in one dimension.

Topological and symmetry broken phases of Z N parafermions in one dimension

Roberto Bondesan, Thomas Quella

We classify the gapped phases of Z_N parafermions in one dimension and construct a representative of each phase. Even in the absence of additional symmetries besides parafermionic parity, parafermions may be realized in a variety of phases, one for each divisor n of N. The phases can be characterized by spontaneous symmetry breaking, topology, or a mixture of the two. Purely topological phases arise if n is a unitary divisor, i.e. if n and N/n are co-prime. Our analysis is based on the explicit realization of all symmetry broken gapped phases in the dual Z_N-invariant quantum spin chains.

Classifying quantum phases using matrix product states and projected entangled pair states

Norbert Schuch, David Pérez-Garcı́a, J. I. Cirac

We give a classification of gapped quantum phases of one-dimensional systems in the framework of matrix product states (MPS) and their associated parent Hamiltonians, for systems with unique as well as degenerate ground states and in both the absence and the presence of symmetries. We find that without symmetries, all systems are in the same phase, up to accidental ground-state degeneracies. If symmetries are imposed, phases without symmetry breaking (i.e., with unique ground states) are classified by the cohomology classes of the symmetry group, that is, the equivalence classes of its projective representations, a result first derived by Chen, Gu, and Wen [Phys. Rev. B 83, 035107 (2011)]. For phases with symmetry breaking (i.e., degenerate ground states), we find that the symmetry consists of two parts, one of which acts by permuting the ground states, while the other acts on individual ground states, and phases are labeled by both the permutation action of the former and the cohomology class of the latter. Using projected entangled pair states (PEPS), we subsequently extend our framework to the classification of two-dimensional phases in the neighborhood of a number of important cases, in particular, systems with unique ground states, degenerate ground states with a local order parameter, and topological order. We also show that in two dimensions, imposing symmetries does not constrain the phase diagram in the same way it does in one dimension. As a central tool, we introduce the isometric form, a normal form for MPS and PEPS, which is a renormalization fixed point. Transforming a state to its isometric form does not change the phase, and thus we can focus on to the classification of isometric forms.

Fermionic matrix product states and one-dimensional topological phases

Nick Bultinck, Dominic J. Williamson, Jutho Haegeman +1 more

We develop the formalism of fermionic matrix product states (fMPS) and show how irreducible fMPS fall in two different classes, related to the different types of simple ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ graded algebras, which are physically distinguished by the absence or presence of Majorana edge modes. The local structure of fMPS with Majorana edge modes also implies that there is always a twofold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum. Using the fMPS formalism, we make explicit the correspondence between the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{8}$ classification of time-reversal-invariant spinless superconductors and the modulo 8 periodicity in the representation theory of real Clifford algebras. Studying fMPS with general onsite unitary and antiunitary symmetries allows us to define invariants that label symmetry-protected phases of interacting fermions. The behavior of these invariants under stacking of fMPS is derived, which reveals the group structure of such interacting phases. We also consider spatial symmetries and show how the invariant phase factor in the partition function of reflection-symmetric phases on an unorientable manifold appears in the fMPS framework.

Classification of gapped symmetric phases in one-dimensional spin systems

Xie Chen, Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Xiao-Gang Wen

Quantum many-body systems divide into a variety of phases with very different physical properties. The questions of what kinds of phases exist and how to identify them seem hard, especially for strongly interacting systems. Here we make an attempt to answer these questions for gapped interacting quantum spin systems whose ground states are short-range correlated. Based on the local unitary equivalence relation between short-range-correlated states in the same phase, we classify possible quantum phases for one-dimensional (1D) matrix product states, which represent well the class of 1D gapped ground states. We find that in the absence of any symmetry all states are equivalent to trivial product states, which means that there is no topological order in 1D. However, if a certain symmetry is required, many phases exist with different symmetry-protected topological orders. The symmetric local unitary equivalence relation also allows us to obtain some simple results for quantum phases in higher dimensions when some symmetries are present.

In the Fock representation, we construct matrix product states (MPS) for one-dimensional gapped phases for Zp{\mathbb{Z}}_{p}Zp parafermions. For the Zr{\mathbb{Z}}_{r}Zr-symmetric parafermionic ground states, where r=pr=pr=p for trivial or topological phases, and r=p/nr=p/nr=p/n for SSB phases, each original gapped phase with odd rrr is divided into two phases, while each phase with even rrr is further separated into four phases. The gapped parafermionic phases with the TR symmetry include the symmetry protected topological phases, symmetry enriched topological phases, and the SSB coexisting symmetry protected topological phases.
