Abstract

Ensembles of quantum-mechanical spins offer a promising platform for quantum memories, but proper functionality requires accurate control of unavoidable system imperfections. We present an efficient control scheme for a spin ensemble strongly coupled to a single-mode cavity based on a set of Volterra equations relying solely on weak classical control pulses. The viability of our approach is demonstrated in terms of explicit storage and readout sequences that will serve as a starting point towards the realization of more demanding full quantum-mechanical optimal control schemes.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a single-mode cavity strongly coupled to an inhomogeneously broadened spin ensemble

Dmitry O. Krimer, Stefan Putz, Johannes Majer +1 more

We study the dynamics of a spin ensemble strongly coupled to a single-mode resonator driven by external pulses. When the mean frequency of the spin ensemble is in resonance with the cavity mode, damped Rabi oscillations are found between the spin ensemble and the cavity mode which we describe very accurately, including the dephasing effect of the inhomogeneous spin broadening. We demonstrate that a precise knowledge of this broadening is crucial both for a qualitative and a quantitative understanding of the temporal spin-cavity dynamics. On this basis we show that coherent oscillations between the spin ensemble and the cavity can be enhanced by a few orders of magnitude, when driving the system with pulses that match special resonance conditions. Our theoretical approach is tested successfully with an experiment based on an ensemble of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond strongly coupled to a superconducting coplanar single-mode waveguide resonator.

Optimally Controlled Storage of a Qubit in an Inhomogeneous Spin Ensemble

Rahul Gupta, Florian Mintert, Himadri Shekhar Dhar

The storage of quantum information in spin-ensembles is limited by practically unavoidable inhomogeneous broadening, and the macroscopic number of spins in such an ensemble makes the design of control solutions to increase the coherence time a challenging task. Together with a concurrently developed Krylov theory that allows us to treat the control problem efficiently, we design optimal cavity modulation for such spin ensembles that achieve an order of magnitude enhancement in qubit lifetime compared to the losses due to inhomogeneity and cavity decay.

Fundamental limitations in spin-ensemble quantum memories for cavity fields

Brian Julsgaard, Klaus Mølmer

Inhomogeneously broadened spin ensembles play an important role in present-day implementation of hybrid quantum processing architectures. When coupled to a cavity, such an ensemble may serve as a multimode quantum memory for the cavity field, and by employing spin-refocusing techniques the quantum-memory time can be extended to the coherence time of individual spins in the ensemble. In this paper, we investigate such a memory protocol capable of storing an unknown cavity-field state, and we examine separately the various constituents of the protocol: the storage and readout part, the memory hold time with the spin ensemble and cavity field decoupled, and the parts employing spin-refocusing techniques. Using both analytical and numerical methods, we derive how the obtainable memory performance scales with various physical parameters.

Weak coherent pulses for single-photon quantum memories

Luigi Giannelli, Tom Schmit, Giovanna Morigi

Abstract Attenuated laser pulses are often employed in place for single photons in order to test the efficiency of the elements of a quantum network. In this work we analyze theoretically the dynamics of storage of an attenuated light pulse (where the pulse intensity is at the single photon level) propagating along a transmission line and impinging on the mirror of a high finesse cavity. Storage is realized by the controlled transfer of the photonic excitations into a metastable state of an atom confined inside the cavity and occurs via a Raman transition with a suitably tailored laser pulse, which drives the atom and minimizes reflection at the cavity mirror. We determine the storage efficiency of the weak coherent pulse which is reached by protocols optimized for single-photon storage. We determine the figures of merit and we identify the conditions on an arbitrary pulse for which the storage dynamics approaches the one of a single photon. Our formalism can be extended to arbitrary types of input pulses and to quantum memories composed by spin ensembles, and serves as a basis for identifying the optimal protocols for storage and readout.

Dynamics of the collective modes of an inhomogeneous spin ensemble in a cavity

Janus H. Wesenberg, Z. Kurucz, Klaus Mølmer

We study the excitation dynamics of an inhomogeneously broadened spin ensemble coupled to a single cavity mode. The collective excitations of the spin ensemble can be described in terms of generalized spin waves, and, in the absence of the cavity, the free evolution of the spin ensemble can be described as a drift in the wavenumber without dispersion. In this article we show that the dynamics in the presence of coupling to the cavity mode can be described solely by a modified time evolution of the wavenumbers. In particular, we show that collective excitations with a well-defined wavenumber pass without dispersion from negative to positive-valued wavenumbers without populating the zero wavenumber spin wave mode. The results are relevant for multimode collective quantum memories where qubits are encoded in different spin waves.

Analytical solutions for optimal photon absorption into inhomogeneous spin memories

József Zsolt Bernád, Michael Schilling, Yutian Wen +4 more

Abstract We investigate for optimal photon absorption a quantum electrodynamical model of an inhomogeneously-broadened spin ensemble coupled to a single-mode cavity. Solutions to this problem under experimental assumptions are developed in the Schrödinger picture without using perturbation theory concerning the cavity-spin interactions. Furthermore, we exploit the possibility of modulating the frequency and coupling rate of the resonator. We consider a one-photon input pulse and show some optimal scenarios, where exact formulas and numerical results are obtained for the absorption probabilities and the optimal pulse shapes. In particular, if the external loss dominates the internal loss of the cavity, we find the optimal cooperativity for different parameters and identify cases where absorption with a success probability larger than 99% is achieved.
