Abstract

When a periodically modulated many-body quantum system is weakly coupled to an environment, the combined action of these temporal modulations and dissipation steers the system towards a state characterized by a time-periodic density operator. To resolve this asymptotic non-equilibrium state at stroboscopic instants of time, we use the dissipative propagator over one period of modulations, 'Floquet map', and evaluate the stroboscopic density operator as its invariant. Particle interactions control properties of the map and thus the features of its invariant. In addition, the spectrum of the map provides insight into the system relaxation towards the asymptotic state and may help to understand whether it is possible (or not) to construct a stroboscopic time-independent Lindblad generator which mimics the action of the original time-dependent one. We illustrate the idea with a scalable many-body model, a periodically modulated Bose–Hubbard dimer. We contrast the relations between the interaction-induced bifurcations in a mean-field description with the numerically exact stroboscopic evolution and discuss the characteristics of the genuine quantum many-body state vs the characteristics of its mean-field counterpart.

Asymptotic state of many-body open quantum systems under time-periodic modulations

M. Hartmann, Dario Poletti, Mikhail Ivanchenko +2 more

The asymptotic state of a periodically driven many-body quantum system in contact with an environment is investigated. The combined action of the driving and the environment steers the system towards a state being characterized by a time-periodic density operator. To compute this asymptotic non-equilibrium state at stroboscopic instants of time, we introduce the dissipative Floquet map, find the stroboscopic density operator as its eigen-operator and demonstrate how particle interactions affect properties of the density operator. We illustrate the idea with a periodically rocked open Bose-Hubbard dimer and discuss the relations between the interaction-induced bifurcation transitions in a mean-field dynamics and changes in the characteristics of the quantum many-body state. We argue that Floquet maps can provide insight into the system relaxation towards its asymptotic state and may help to identify the stroboscopic time-independent generator mimicking the action of the original time-dependent one.

Asymptotic Floquet states of a periodically driven spin-boson system in the nonperturbative coupling regime

Luca Magazzù, S. Denisov, Peter Hänggi A

Being an exemplary model of open quantum system, the spin-boson model is widely employed in theoretical and experimental studies. Beyond the weak coupling limit, the spin-boson dynamics can be described by a time-nonlocal generalized master equation with a memory kernel accounting for the dissipative effects induced by the bosonic environment. When the spin is in addition modulated by an external time-periodic electromagnetic field, the interplay between dissipation and forcing provides a spectrum of nontrivial asymptotic states, especially so in the regime of nonlinear response. Here we implement the method for evaluating the dissipative Floquet dynamics of non-Markovian systems introduced in Magazzù et al. [Phys. Rev. A 96, 042103 (2017)2469-992610.1103/PhysRevA.96.042103] to obtain these nonequilibrium asymptotic states.

Sambe Approach to Floquet-Lindblad Open Quantum Systems

Andriani Keliri, Marco Schirò

We study driven and open quantum systems described by a time-periodic Lindblad master equation. In closed systems, the stroboscopic dynamics can always be described by an effective time-independent Floquet Hamiltonian; this idea is the basis of Floquet engineering. However, in the presence of dissipation, the existence of an effective time-independent Floquet Lindbladian is not guaranteed due to the non-unitary nature of the evolution. Using Floquet theory, we construct a well-defined time-independent Floquet Lindbladian in an extended Sambe-Liouville space, transforming the initial time-dependent problem to a static and non-Hermitian eigenvalue problem. For harmonic driving, we introduce a matrix continued fraction method to nonperturbatively resum multiphoton processes and construct an effective Floquet Lindbladian acting only on the physical Liouville space. Compared to other high-frequency expansions, this method has the advantage of providing the whole infinite series expansion at once. Using a resolvent formalism, we show how to obtain a spectral Floquet representation of correlation functions of an open quantum system. As an application, we consider a dissipating two-level system in a linearly polarized field and calculate its resonance fluorescence spectrum. Furthermore, we consider a parametrically driven quantum dot with pump and loss for which we calculate its spectral function and current-voltage characteristics.

Is there a Floquet Lindbladian?

Alexander Schnell, André Eckardt, S. Denisov

The stroboscopic evolution of a time-periodically driven isolated quantum system can always be described by an effective time-independent Hamiltonian. Whether this concept can be generalized to open Floquet systems, described by a Markovian Lindblad master equation with a time-periodic generator (Lindbladian), remains an open question. By using a two-level system as a model, we explicitly show the existence of two well-defined parameter regions. In one region the stroboscopic evolution can be described by a Markovian master equation with a time-independent Floquet Lindbladian. In the other it cannot; but here the one-cycle evolution operator can be reproduced with an effective non-Markovian master equation that is homogeneous but nonlocal in time. Interestingly, we find that the boundary between the phases depends on when during the period the evolution is stroboscopically monitored. This reveals the nontrivial role played by the micromotion in the dynamics of open Floquet systems.

Long-time asymptotic states of periodically driven open quantum systems

達彦 白井

In this thesis, we study long-time asymptotic states of periodically driven quantum systems in a dissipative environment. In order to describe the subclass of the systems, we introduce the Floquet-Gibbs state, i.e., a state whose density matrix is diagonal in the basis of the Floquet states with diagonal elements given by a Boltzmann distribution over the quasienergies. We obtain sufficient conditions for the realization of the Floquet-Gibbs state in a system with an infinitesimal system-bath coupling strength, and find that these conditions severely restrict a class of suitable systems attaining this form. With the aid of a truncated Floquet Hamiltonian in the Floquet-Magnus expansion and without the rotating wave approximation, we lift the condition of the infinitesimal coupling strength and extend the idea of the Floquet-Gibbs state to a broader subclass of open quantum system with a finite dissipation effect. We also study cooperative phenomena of a periodically driven cavity system surrounded by a dissipative environment. We found a novel-type of symmetry breaking phenomenon, which originates from a synergistic effect of the microscopic dynamical effects of the driving field and interaction effects. We show that a part of this phenomenon can be understood from the concept of the Floquet-Gibbs state. It is great pleasure to express my gratitude to all the people who help, guide, and encourage me during my time as a graduate student.Without their help I definitely could not write up this thesis.First of all, I would like to thank my supervisor Professor Seiji Miyashita and Dr. Takashi Mori.Their energetic attitudes towards physics and personality continuously stimulate me.

Periodic driving of a coherent quantum many body system and relaxation to the Floquet diagonal ensemble

Angelo Russomanno

The coherent dynamics of many body quantum system is nowadays an experimental reality: by means of the cold atoms in optical lattices, many Hamiltonians and time-dependent perturbations can be engineered. In this Thesis we discuss what happens in these systems when a periodic perturbation is applied. Thanks to Floquet theory, we can see that -- if the Floquet spectrum obeys certain continuity conditions possible in the thermodynamic limit-- dephasing among Floquet quasi-energies makes local observables relax to a periodic steady regime described by an effective density matrix: the Floquet diagonal ensemble (FDE). By means of numerical examples on the Quantum Ising Chain and the Lipkin model, we discuss the properties of the FDE focusing on the difference among ergodic and regular quantum dynamics and on how this reflects on the thermal properties ($T=\infty$) of the asymptotic condition. We verify thermalization in the classically ergodic Lipkin model and we demonstrate that this effect is induced by the Floquet states being delocalized and obeying Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis. We discuss also, in the Ising chain case, the work probability distribution, whose asymptotic condition is not described by the form (Generalized Gibbs Ensemble) that FDE acquires for local obserbvables because of integrability. Dephasing makes some correlations invisible in the local observables, but they are still present in the system. We consider also the linear response limit: when the amplitude of the perturbation is vanishingly small, the Floquet diagonal ensemble is not sufficient to describe the asymptotic condition given by LRT. For every small but finite amplitude, there are quasi-degeneracies in the Floquet spectrum giving rise to pre-relaxation to the condition predicted by Linear Response; these phenomena are strictly related to energy absorption and boundedness of the spectrum.
