Abstract

Being an exemplary model of open quantum system, the spin-boson model is widely employed in theoretical and experimental studies. Beyond the weak coupling limit, the spin-boson dynamics can be described by a time-nonlocal generalized master equation with a memory kernel accounting for the dissipative effects induced by the bosonic environment. When the spin is in addition modulated by an external time-periodic electromagnetic field, the interplay between dissipation and forcing provides a spectrum of nontrivial asymptotic states, especially so in the regime of nonlinear response. Here we implement the method for evaluating the dissipative Floquet dynamics of non-Markovian systems introduced in Magazzù et al. [Phys. Rev. A 96, 042103 (2017)2469-992610.1103/PhysRevA.96.042103] to obtain these nonequilibrium asymptotic states.

Floquet time-convolutionless master equation for non-Markovian driven quantum systems

Pietro Follia, Heinz-Peter Breuer, Bassano Vacchini

We study the dynamics of open quantum systems driven by an external time-periodic force. Combining Floquet theory and the time-convolutionless projection operator technique we derive a time-local quantum master equation which exactly takes into account the periodic driving, while treating the system-environment interaction within second order in the coupling strength without performing the Markov approximation. The resulting equation of motion for the reduced density matrix is called Floquet time-convolutionless master equation. Employing the example of the driven spin-boson system, we demonstrate that this master equation is capable of describing strong non-Markovian effects, while yielding the Floquet-Lindblad master equation in the Markovian limit. A characteristic feature of memory effects in such driven dissipative systems is the emergence of sharp peaks of the trace-distance based non-Markovianity measure as a function of the driving amplitude, which can be traced back to quasienergy crossings leading to almost decoherence-protected subspaces through a quasienergy-induced dissipative decoupling mechanism.

Nonperturbative stochastic method for driven spin-boson model

Peter P. Orth, Adilet Imambekov, Karyn Le Hur

We introduce and apply a numerically exact method for investigating the real-time dissipative dynamics of quantum impurities embedded in a macroscopic environment beyond the weak-coupling limit. We focus on the spin-boson Hamiltonian that describes a two-level system interacting with a bosonic bath of harmonic oscillators. This model is archetypal for investigating dissipation in quantum systems, and tunable experimental realizations exist in mesoscopic and cold-atom systems. It finds abundant applications in physics ranging from the study of decoherence in quantum computing and quantum optics to extended dynamical mean-field theory. Starting from the real-time Feynman-Vernon path integral, we derive an exact stochastic Schr\"odinger equation that allows us to compute the full spin density matrix and spin-spin correlation functions beyond weak coupling. We greatly extend our earlier work [P. P. Orth, A. Imambekov, and K. Le Hur, Phys. Rev. A 82, 032118 (2010)] by fleshing out the core concepts of the method and by presenting a number of interesting applications. Methodologically, we present an analogy between the dissipative dynamics of a quantum spin and that of a classical spin in a random magnetic field. This analogy is used to recover the well-known noninteracting-blip approximation in the weak-coupling limit. We explain in detail how to compute spin-spin autocorrelation functions. As interesting applications of our method, we explore the non-Markovian effects of the initial spin-bath preparation on the dynamics of the coherence ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{x}(t)$ and of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{z}(t)$ under a Landau-Zener sweep of the bias field. We also compute to a high precision the asymptotic long-time dynamics of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{z}(t)$ without bias and demonstrate the wide applicability of our approach by calculating the spin dynamics at nonzero bias and different temperatures.

Asymptotic Floquet states of open quantum systems: the role of interaction

M. Hartmann, Dario Poletti, Mikhail Ivanchenko +2 more

When a periodically modulated many-body quantum system is weakly coupled to an environment, the combined action of these temporal modulations and dissipation steers the system towards a state characterized by a time-periodic density operator. To resolve this asymptotic non-equilibrium state at stroboscopic instants of time, we use the dissipative propagator over one period of modulations, 'Floquet map', and evaluate the stroboscopic density operator as its invariant. Particle interactions control properties of the map and thus the features of its invariant. In addition, the spectrum of the map provides insight into the system relaxation towards the asymptotic state and may help to understand whether it is possible (or not) to construct a stroboscopic time-independent Lindblad generator which mimics the action of the original time-dependent one. We illustrate the idea with a scalable many-body model, a periodically modulated Bose–Hubbard dimer. We contrast the relations between the interaction-induced bifurcations in a mean-field description with the numerically exact stroboscopic evolution and discuss the characteristics of the genuine quantum many-body state vs the characteristics of its mean-field counterpart.

Exact Floquet dynamics of strongly damped driven quantum systems

Konrad Mickiewicz, Valentin Link, Walter T. Strunz

We present an approach for efficiently simulating strongly damped quantum systems subjected to periodic driving, employing a periodic matrix product operator representation of the influence functional. This representation enables the construction of a numerically exact Floquet propagator that captures the non-Markovian open system dynamics, thus providing a dissipative analogue to the Floquet Hamiltonian of driven isolated quantum systems. We apply this method to study the asymptotic heating of a reservoir in spin-boson models, characterizing the deviation from equilibrium conditions. Moreover, we show how a local driving of two qubits can be utilized to stabilize a transient entanglement buildup of the qubits originating from the interaction with a common environment. Our results make it possible to directly study both stationary and transient dynamics of strongly damped and driven quantum systems within a transparent theoretical and numerical framework.

Non-Markovian Quantum Dynamics in a Squeezed Reservoir

Valentin Link, Walter T. Strunz, Kimmo Luoma

We study non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system system interacting with a nonstationary squeezed bosonic reservoir. We derive exact and approximate descriptions for the open system dynamics. Focusing on the spin boson model, we compare exact dynamics with Redfield theory and a quantum optical master equation for both short and long time dynamics and in non-Markovian and Markov regimes. The squeezing of the bath results in asymptotic oscillations in the stationary state, which are captured faithfully by the Redfield master equation in the case of weak coupling. Furthermore, we find that the bath squeezing direction modifies the effective system-environment coupling strength and, thus, the strength of the dissipation.

Dynamical signatures of non-Markovianity in a dissipative-driven qubit

Graziano Amati

We investigate signatures of non-Markovianity in the dynamics of a periodically driven qubit coupled to a dissipative bosonic environment. We propagate the dynamics of the reduced density matrix of the qubit by integrating the numerically exact hierarchical equations of motion. Non-Markovian features are quantified by comparing on an equal footing the predictions from diverse and complementary approaches to quantum dissipation. In particular, we analyze the distinguishability of quantum states, the decay of the volume accessible to the qubit on the Hilbert space, the negativity of the canonical rates in the generalized Lindblad equation, and the relaxation of the memory kernels in the Nakajima-Zwanzig generalized quantum master equation. We study the effects of controlled driving on the coherent dynamics of the system. We show that a suitable external field can offset the ergodic relaxation of time-correlation functions, increase distinguishability over time, and strengthen non-Markovian effects witnessed by the canonical dissipation channels. We furthermore observe the phenomenon of eternal non-Markovianity for sufficiently small system-bath coupling and we discuss how this can be enhanced by modulating the frequency of the external drive. This work provides a broad theoretical analysis of quantum dissipation in the framework of open quantum dynamics and quantum information.
