Adiabatic approximation and fluctuations in exciton-polariton condensates

Abstract

We study the relation between the models commonly used to describe the dynamics of nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensates, namely the ones described by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and by the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation including a separate equation for the reservoir density. In particular, we focus on the validity of the adiabatic approximation and small density fluctuations approximation that allow one to reduce the coupled condensate-reservoir dynamics to a single partial differential equation. We find that the adiabatic approximation consists of three independent analytical conditions that have to be fulfilled simultaneously. By investigating stochastic versions of the two corresponding models, we verify that the breakdown of these approximations can lead to discrepancies in correlation lengths and distributions of fluctuations. Additionally, we consider the phase diffusion and number fluctuations of a condensate in a box, and show that self-consistent description requires treatment beyond the typical Bogoliubov approximation.

Dynamical Instability of a Nonequilibrium Exciton-Polariton Condensate

Nataliya Bobrovska, Michał Matuszewski, Konstantinos S. Daskalakis +2 more

By imaging single-shot realizations of an organic polariton quantum fluid, we observe the long-sought dynamical instability of nonequilibrium condensates. We find an excellent agreement between the experimental data and a numerical simulation of the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation, without performing any parameter fitting, which allows us to draw several important conclusions about the physics of the system. We find that the reservoir dynamics are in the strongly nonadiabatic regime, which renders the complex Ginzburg–Landau description invalid. The observed transition from stable to unstable fluid can only be explained by taking into account the specific form of reservoir-mediated instability as well as particle currents induced by the finite extent of the pump spot.

Stability and spatial coherence of nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensates

Nataliya Bobrovska, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Michał Matuszewski

We investigate the stability and coherence properties of one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensates under nonresonant pumping. We model the condensate dynamics using the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the case of spatially homogeneous pumping, we find that the instability of the steady state leads to significant reduction of the coherence length. We consider two effects that can lead to the stabilization of the steady state, i.e., the polariton energy relaxation and the influence of an inhomogeneous pumping profile. We find that, while the former has little effect on the stability, the latter is very effective in stabilizing the condensate, which results in a large coherence length.

Spatial Coherence of Exciton–Polariton Bose–Einstein Condensates

N. V. Kuznetsova, Денис В. Макаров, Norayr Armenovich Asriyan +2 more

Abstract The dynamics of an exciton–polariton Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical microcavity was considered. A novel version of the stochastic Gross–Pitaevskii equation was proposed to describe the condensate evolution under the non-Markovian interaction with the environment. The proposed version was used to analyze the condensate dynamics at various temperatures. The phase transition from the homogeneous to the fragmented state of the condensate near a temperature of 15 K was detected. This phase transition is accompanied by a sharp drop in the condensate density and a decrease in the correlation length. It was found that, at a temperature of 10 K, the correlation length oscillates with time. The results obtained indicated the necessity to take into account the non-Markovianity of the condensate interaction with the excitonic reservoir.

Spinor polariton condensates under nonresonant pumping: Steady states and elementary excitations

Xingran Xu, Ying Hu, Zhang Zhi-dong +1 more

We theoretically investigate a spinor polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation of a spin-unpolarized reservoir. We find the homogeneous polariton condensate can transit from the spin-unpolarized phase, where it is linearly polarized, to the spin-polarized phase, where it is elliptically polarized, depending on the cross-spin versus same-spin interactions and the linear polarization splitting. In both phases, we study elementary excitations using Bogoliubov approach, in a regime where the decay rate of total exciton density in reservoir crosses over from the slow to the fast limit. Depending on reservoir parameters, the global-phase mode can be either diffusive or gapped. By contrast, the relative-phase mode always possesses a gapped energy, undamped in the spin-unpolarized phase but weakly damped in the spin-polarized phase. In the spin-unpolarized phase, both modes are linearly polarized despite pumping and decay. However, in the spin-polarized phase, the mode polarization can be significantly affected by the reservoir and depends strongly on the circular polarization degree of the condensate. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the ``ghost'' branch of the Bogoliubov spectrum of the relative-phase mode can be visualized in the photoluminescence emission, distinguishable from that of the global-phase mode and thus allowing for experimental observation, when the spinor polariton condensate is elliptically polarized.

Quench Dynamics and Stability of Dark Solitons in Exciton–Polariton Condensates

Chunyu Jia, Zhaoxin Liang

Exciton–polariton condensates (EPCs) have emerged as a paradigmatic platform for investigating nonequilibrium quantum many-body phenomena, particularly due to their intrinsic open-dissipative nature and strong nonlinear interactions governed by the interplay between stimulated scattering and reservoir-mediated damping. Recent advances in Feshbach resonance engineering now enable precise tuning of interaction strengths, opening new avenues to explore exotic nonlinear excitations in these driven-dissipative systems. In this work, we systematically investigate the quench dynamics and stability of dark solitons in repulsive one-dimensional EPCs under sudden parameter variations in both nonlinear interaction strength g and pump intensity P. Through a Hamiltonian variational approach that incorporates reservoir damping effects, we derive reduced equations of motion for soliton velocity evolution that exhibit remarkable qualitative agreement with direct numerical simulations of the underlying open-dissipative Gross–Pitaevskii equation. Our results reveal three distinct dynamical regimes: (i) stable soliton propagation at intermediate pump powers, (ii) velocity-dependent soliton breakup above critical pumping thresholds, and (iii) parametric excitation of soliton trains under simultaneous interaction quenches. These findings establish a quantitative framework for understanding soliton dynamics in nonresonantly pumped EPCs, with implications for quantum fluid dynamics and nonequilibrium Bose–Einstein condensates.
