Abstract

We theoretically investigate a spinor polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation of a spin-unpolarized reservoir. We find the homogeneous polariton condensate can transit from the spin-unpolarized phase, where it is linearly polarized, to the spin-polarized phase, where it is elliptically polarized, depending on the cross-spin versus same-spin interactions and the linear polarization splitting. In both phases, we study elementary excitations using Bogoliubov approach, in a regime where the decay rate of total exciton density in reservoir crosses over from the slow to the fast limit. Depending on reservoir parameters, the global-phase mode can be either diffusive or gapped. By contrast, the relative-phase mode always possesses a gapped energy, undamped in the spin-unpolarized phase but weakly damped in the spin-polarized phase. In the spin-unpolarized phase, both modes are linearly polarized despite pumping and decay. However, in the spin-polarized phase, the mode polarization can be significantly affected by the reservoir and depends strongly on the circular polarization degree of the condensate. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the ``ghost'' branch of the Bogoliubov spectrum of the relative-phase mode can be visualized in the photoluminescence emission, distinguishable from that of the global-phase mode and thus allowing for experimental observation, when the spinor polariton condensate is elliptically polarized.

Optical Bistability under Nonresonant Excitation in Spinor Polariton Condensates

L. Pickup, Kirill P. Kalinin, Alexis Askitopoulos +4 more

We realize bistability in the spinor of polariton condensates under nonresonant optical excitation and in the absence of biasing external fields. Numerical modeling of the system using the Ginzburg-Landau equation with an internal Josephson coupling between the two spin components of the condensate qualitatively describes the experimental observations. We demonstrate that polariton spin bistability strongly depends on the condensate's overlap with the exciton reservoir by tuning the excitation geometry and sample temperature. We obtain noncollapsing bistability hysteresis loops for a record range of sweep times, [10 μs, 1 s], offering a promising route to spin switches and spin memory elements.

Hysteresis in linearly polarized nonresonantly driven exciton-polariton condensates

Helgi Sigurðsson

It is shown that a condensate of microcavity exciton-polaritons exhibits bistability between its two orthogonal linearly polarized components for varying nonresonant excitation power.A non-Hermitian splitting of these components results in two parity-symmetric fixed-point solutions of opposite polarization, making up the hysteresis branches. These solutions correspond to the lowest threshold linearly polarized mode, which dominates at low pump powers, and a cross-polarized mode, which appears due to nonlinear pinning at higher excitation powers. The spin symmetry of the solutions extends the nonresonant bistable operation of polariton condensates to the entire equatorial plane of the Poincaré sphere. The results pave the way towards development of tailored bistable, linearly polarized, coherent sources of light.

Polarized Nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensates of Spinor Exciton Polaritons in a Magnetic Field

A. V. Larionov, V. D. Kulakovskiĭ, Sven Höfling +3 more

The effect of a magnetic field on a spinor exciton-polariton condensate has been investigated. A quenching of a polariton Zeeman splitting and an elliptical polarization of the condensate have been observed at low magnetic fields B<2 T. The effects are attributed to a competition between the magnetic field induced circular polarization buildup and the spin-anisotropic polariton-polariton interaction which favors a linear polarization. The sign of the circular polarization of the condensate emission at B<3 T is negative, suggesting that a dynamic condensation in the excited spin state rather than the ground spin state takes place in this magnetic field range. From about 2T on, the Zeeman splitting opens and from then on the slope of the circular polarization degree changes its sign. For magnetic fields larger than the 3 T, the upper spin state occupation is energetically suppressed and circularly polarized condensation takes place in the ground state.

Nonequilibrium spinor exciton-polariton condensates in a magnetic field

Ting-Wei Chen, Szu-Cheng Cheng

Abstract A complete-nonequilibrium model is proposed to investigate spinor exciton-polariton condensates (SEPCs) in a magnetic field. Due to the Zeeman splitting (ZS), the loss rates of two spin components in a magnetic field are distinct and affected by the magnetic field. Therefore, the individual spin component of a SEPC has its own threshold pump power. We investigate the ZS and degree of circular polarization of the SEPC as a function of the excitation power and magnetic field. Above both spin-dependent threshold pump powers, we find an increasing degree of circular polarization with the magnetic field and a quenching of the ZS below a critical strength of the magnetic field. The ZS of a SEPC shows a reverse sign and its magnitude is increasing significantly compared to the uncondensed exciton-polartion ZS. The effect of a magnetic field on excitation spectra of SEPCs are also investigated. We find that the excitation dispersions are Bogoliubov excitations if the pump power is low. The nonequilibrium fluctuations in a SEPC are reduced when a magnetic field is applied.

Polalrized reservoirs in dynamics of polariton condensation

I. A. Shelykh, A. V. Yulin

We review the problem of description of the dynamics of driven-disspipative spinor polariton condensates, focusing on the terms corresponding to the coupling between a macroscopic wavefunction of the condensdate and incoherent excitonic reservoir created by a non-resonant pump. We demonstrate that the existing version of the theory breaks down in case, when reservoir has non-zero components of the Stokes vector corresponding to in-plane linear polarization. The polarization invariant theory of reservoir to condensate coupling is formulated with use of the spin density matrix formalism.

Dissipative Magnetic Soliton in a Spinor Polariton Bose–Einstein Condensate

Chunyu Jia, Rukuan Wu, Ying Hu +2 more

Magnetic soliton is an intriguing nonlinear topological excitation that carries magnetic charges while featuring a constant total density. So far, it has only been studied in the ultracold atomic gases with the framework of the equilibrium physics, where its stable existence crucially relies on a nearly spin-isotropic, antiferromagnetic, interaction. Here, we demonstrate that magnetic soliton can appear as the exact solutions of dissipative Gross–Pitaevskii equations in a linearly polarized spinor polariton condensate with the framework of the non-equilibrium physics, even though polariton interactions are strongly spin anisotropic. This is possibly due to a dissipation-enabled mechanism, where spin excitation decouples from other excitation channels as a result of gain-and-loss balance. Such unconventional magnetic soliton transcends constraints of equilibrium counterpart and provides a novel kind of spin-polarized polariton soliton for potential application in opto-spintronics.
