Abstract

Abstract We analyze the excitation of two ground state atoms to a double Rydberg state by a two-photon chirped optical pulse in the regime of adiabatic rapid passage (ARP). For intermediate Rydberg–Rydberg interaction strengths relevant for atoms separated by ∼ten μ m, adiabatic excitation can be achieved at experimentally feasible Rabi frequencies and chirp rates of the pulses, resulting in high transfer efficiencies. We also study the adiabatic transfer between ground and Rydberg states as a means to realize a controlled phase gate between atomic qubits.

Adiabatic rapid passage two-photon excitation of a Rydberg atom

Elena Kuznetsova, Gengyuan Liu, Svetlana Malinovskaya

We considered the two-photon adiabatic rapid passage excitation of a single atom from the ground to a Rydberg state. Three schemes were analyzed: both pump and Stokes fields chirped and pulsed, only the pump field chirped, and only the pump field pulsed and chirped while the Stokes field is continuous wave (CW). In all three cases high transfer efficiencies > 99% were achieved for the experimentally realizable Rabi frequencies and the pulse durations of the fields.

Experimental creation of single Rydberg excitations via adiabatic passage

Ming-Ti Zhou, Jian-Long Liu, Peng-Fei Sun +4 more

In an atomic ensemble, quantum information is typically carried as single collective excitations. It is very advantageous if the creation of single excitations is efficient and robust. A Rydberg blockade enables deterministic creation of single excitations via a collective Rabi oscillation by precisely controlling the pulse area, being sensitive to many experimental parameters. In this paper, we implement the adiabatic rapid passage technique to the Rydberg excitation process in a mesoscopic atomic ensemble. We make use of a two-photon excitation scheme with an intermediate state off-resonant and sweep the laser frequency of one excitation laser. We find the chirped scheme preserves internal phases of the collective Rydberg excitation and is more robust against variance of laser intensity and frequency detuning.

Creation of quantum entangled states of Rydberg atoms via chirped adiabatic passage

Elliot Pachniak, Svetlana Malinovskaya

Entangled states are crucial for modern quantum enabled technology which makes their creation key for future developments. In this paper, a robust quantum control methodology is presented to create entangled states of two typical classes, the W and the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ). It was developed from the analysis of a chain of alkali atoms [Formula: see text] interaction with laser pulses, which leads to the two-photon transitions from the ground to the Rydberg states with a predetermined magnetic quantum number. The methodology is based on the mechanism of the two-photon excitation, adiabatic for the GHZ and non-adiabatic for the W state, induced by the overlapping chirped pulses and governed by the Rabi frequency, the one-photon detuning, and the strength of the Rydberg-Rydberg interactions.

Robust Rydberg-interaction gates with adiabatic passage

D. D. Bhaktavatsala Rao, Klaus Mølmer

We show that with adiabatic passage, one can reliably drive two-photon optical transitions between the ground states and interacting Rydberg states in a pair of atoms. For finite Rydberg-interaction strengths an adiabatic pathway towards the doubly Rydberg excited state is identified when a constant detuning is applied with respect to an intermediate optically excited level. The Rydberg interaction among the excited atoms provides a phase that may be used to implement quantum gate operations on atomic ground-state qubits.

Generation of entanglement in spin states of Rydberg atoms by chirped optical pulses

Svetlana Malinovskaya, Elliot Pachniak

Quantum entanglement is a crucial resource in many quantum information and quantum communication tasks. In this work, we present a quantum control methodology to create entangled states of two basic classes, the W and the GHZ. A chain of 87 Rb atoms in an optical lattice is considered interacting with laser pulses to induce two-photon excitations to Rydberg states having a specific magnetic quantum number. Generation of the W and GHZ three-atomic states is demonstrated via the mechanism of the two-photon adiabatic passage in collective states implying the overlapping chirped pulses and the interplay of the Rabi frequency with the one-photon detuning and the strength of the Rydberg-Rydberg interactions.
