Abstract

We construct a scattering matrix formulation for the topological classification of one-dimensional superconductors with effective time-reversal symmetry in the presence of interactions. For an isolated system, Fidkowski and Kitaev have shown that such systems have a Z_{8} topological classification. We here show that these systems have a unitary scattering matrix at zero temperature when weakly coupled to a normal-metal lead, with a topological index given by the trace of the Andreev-reflection matrix, trr_{he}. With interactions, trr_{he} generically takes on the finite set of values 0, ±1, ±2, ±3, and ±4. We show that the two topologically equivalent phases with trr_{he}=±4 support emergent many-body end states, which we identify to be a topologically protected Kondo-like resonance. The path in phase space that connects these equivalent phases crosses a non-Fermi-liquid fixed point where a multiple-channel Kondo effect develops. Our results connect the topological index to transport properties, thereby highlighting the experimental signatures of interacting topological phases in one dimension.

Topological phases of fermions in one dimension

Lukasz Fidkowski, Alexei Kitaev

In this paper we show how the classification of topological phases in insulators and superconductors is changed by interactions, in the case of one-dimensional systems. We focus on the time-reversal-invariant Majorana chain (BDI symmetry class). While the band classification yields an integer topological index $k$, it is known that phases characterized by values of $k$ in the same equivalence class modulo 8 can be adiabatically transformed one to another by adding suitable interaction terms. Here we show that the eight equivalence classes are distinct and exhaustive, and provide a physical interpretation for the interacting invariant modulo 8. The different phases realize different Altland-Zirnbauer classes of the reduced density matrix for an entanglement bipartition into two half chains. We generalize these results to the classification of all one-dimensional gapped phases of fermionic systems with possible antiunitary symmetries, utilizing the algebraic framework of central extensions. We use matrix product state methods to prove our results.

Topological phases of one-dimensional fermions: An entanglement point of view

Ari M. Turner, Frank Pollmann, Erez Berg

The effect of interactions on topological insulators and superconductors remains, to a large extent, an open problem. Here, we describe a framework for classifying phases of one-dimensional interacting fermions, focusing on spinless fermions with time-reversal symmetry and particle number parity conservation, using concepts of entanglement. In agreement with an example presented by L. Fidkowski and A. Kitaev [Phys. Rev. B 81, 134509 (2010)], we find that in the presence of interactions there are only eight distinct phases which obey a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{8}$ group structure. This is in contrast to the $\mathbb{Z}$ classification in the noninteracting case. Each of these eight phases is characterized by a unique set of bulk invariants, related to the transformation laws of its entanglement (Schmidt) eigenstates under symmetry operations, and has a characteristic degeneracy of its entanglement levels. If translational symmetry is present, the number of distinct phases increases to 16.

Real-space construction and classification for time-reversal symmetric crystalline superconductors in 2D interacting fermionic systems

Yiming Liu, Wei-Qiang Chen, Zheng‐Cheng Gu

Crystalline symmetry and time-reversal symmetry are commonly present in real superconducting materials. However, the topological classification of systems respecting these symmetries, particularly for interacting fermions, remains incomplete. In this work, we systematically classify time-reversal symmetry-protected crystalline topological superconductors in two-dimensional interacting fermionic systems using an explicit real-space construction. Among the resulting phases, we identify intrinsically interacting fermionic topological superconductors, i.e., phases that cannot be realized in either free-fermion or interacting bosonic systems. For spinless fermions with protecting symmetry group $C_4 \times Z_2^T$ or $D_4 \times Z_2^T$ (plus fermion parity), the intrinsic sector has a $Z_4$ classification. The corresponding root phases generating this $Z_4$ classification admit a transparent real-space construction in terms of decorated 1D blocks. These blocks are 1D fermionic symmetry-protected topological (FSPT) phases, realizable as double Majorana chains. We further find the corresponding $Z_4$ spinless intrinsic phases for wallpaper groups $p4$, $p4m$, and $p4g$. We also find an additional $Z_2$ intrinsically interacting phase for spinless fermions with wallpaper group $pm$, which is absent with the corresponding point-group symmetry alone. Moreover, these intrinsic phases naturally give rise to higher-order FSPT phases that support corner zero modes. Finally, we verify the crystalline equivalence principle for generic 2D interacting FSPT systems with both crystalline and internal symmetries.

Fermionic topological phases and bosonization in higher dimensions

Ryohei Kobayashi

Abstract We review a recipe to produce a lattice construction of fermionic phases of matter in the presence of time reversal symmetry by extending the fermionization and bosonization known in (1+1) dimensions to various setups including higher spacetime dimensions in the presence of global symmetries. As an application, we provide a state sum lattice path integral for a (1+1)-dimensional topological superconductor with time reversal symmetry generating the $\mathbb{Z}_8$ classification of the symmetry-protected topological phase. We also illustrate a state sum path integral for a (3+1)-dimensional topological superconductor with time reversal symmetry that generates the $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ classification.

Many-Body Topological Invariants for Fermionic Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases

Hassan Shapourian, Ken Shiozaki, Shinsei Ryu

We define and compute many-body topological invariants of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases, protected by an orientation-reversing symmetry, such as time-reversal or reflection symmetry. The topological invariants are given by partition functions obtained by a path integral on unoriented spacetime which, as we show, can be computed for a given ground state wave function by considering a nonlocal operation, "partial" reflection or transpose. As an application of our scheme, we study the Z_{8} and Z_{16} classification of topological superconductors in one and three dimensions.

Interacting One-Dimensional Fermionic Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases

Evelyn Tang, Xiao-Gang Wen

In free fermion systems with given symmetry and dimension, the possible topological phases are labeled by elements of only three types of Abelian groups, 0, Z2, or Z. For example, noninteracting one-dimensional fermionic superconducting phases with S(z) spin rotation and time-reversal symmetries are classified by Z. We show that with weak interactions, this classification reduces to Z4. Using group cohomology, one can additionally show that there are only four distinct phases for such one-dimensional superconductors even with strong interactions. Comparing their projective representations, we find that all these four symmetry-protected topological phases can be realized with free fermions. Further, we show that one-dimensional fermionic superconducting phases with Z(n) discrete S(z) spin rotation and time-reversal symmetries are classified by Z4 when n is even and Z2 when n is odd; again, all these strongly interacting topological phases can be realized by noninteracting fermions. Our approach can be applied to systems with other symmetries to see which one-dimensional topological phases can be realized with free fermions.
